Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imitation of Christ - Thomas a Kempis - Translated by Rev. William Benham - The Imitation of Christ is a Christian devotional book. It was first composed in Latin ca. 1418-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The treatise "Of the Imitation of Christ" appears to have been originally written in Latin early in the fifteenth century. Its exact date and its authorship are still a matter of debate. Manuscripts of the Latin version survive in considerable numbers all over Western Europe, and they, with the vast list of translations and of printed editions, testify to its almost unparalleled popularity. One scribe attributes it to St. Bernard of Clairvaux; but the fact that it contains a quotation from St. Francis of Assisi, who was born thirty years after the death of St. Bernard, disposes of this theory. In England there exist many manuscripts of the first three books, called "Musica Ecclesiastica," frequently ascribed to the English mystic Walter Hilton. But Hilton seems to have died in 1395, and there is no evidence of the existence of the work before 1400. Many manuscripts scattered throughout Europe ascribe the book to Jean le Charlier de Gerson, the great Chancellor of the University of Paris, who was a leading figure in the Church in the earlier part of the fifteenth century. The most probable author, however, especially when the internal evidence is considered, is Thomas Haemmerlein, known also as Thomas a Kempis, from his native town of Kempen, near the Rhine, about forty miles north of Cologne. Haemmerlein, who was born in 1379 or 1380, was a member of the order of the Brothers of Common Life, and spent the last seventy years of his life at Mount St. Agnes, a monastery of Augustinian canons in the diocese of Utrecht. Here he died on July 26, 1471, after an uneventful life spent in copying manuscripts, reading, and composing, and in the peaceful routine of monastic piety."

Thomas Hemerken, aka THOMAS KEMPIS (1380-1471), was a Christian monk and mystic from Kempen, Germany, and he intended this patchwork of medieval mysticism for the most sincere and dedicated of believers-monks, nuns-but lay Christians find wisdom in his encouragement and teaching of a direct path to a relationship with God. Readers of Christian theology and students of medieval literature alike will be fascinated by this work, one of the most powerful influences on modern spirituality and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authorship of the De Imitatione Christi: With Many Interesting Particulars About the Book During a season of leisure, when free from parochial duties, and desirous of being usefully employed, I had formed the design of writing the Life of Thomas a Kempis, and had spent some time in collecting and arranging materials for it. Much of the celebrity of this pious individual arises from his being recognised as the author of the 'De Imitatione Christi, ' and it was upon this assumption that I was preparing to write his life. I was well aware, however, that the fact had been warmly disputed, and that other persons had been acknowledged instead, and therefore I purposed to write an introduction to the Life, showing briefly the grounds upon which I had formed my decision that the priceless work of the 'De Imitatione' had been written by him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Is it possible for the average believer to truly imitate Christ? Such is the question posed by the 14th century monk in this compelling collection of short devotional thoughts. Thomas a Kempis focused on the themes of love, mercy, and the holiness of God with the hope of helping believers understand the importance of following in the footsteps of Christ. Writing of our need for a dependence upon our Creator, a Kempis reveals the emptiness of a life lived apart from the ultimate source of truth, while exhorting the Christian to seek happiness in knowing and serving God."--Inside jacket cover.
