Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Japan: And a Complete History of the War in the Far East During the American Civil War, journalistic enter prise set the pace for the world, as it has continued to do since, and here we find the first example of serious restraint against that absolute freedom in the publication of news which followed the establishment of the doctrine of the liberty Of the press towards the close of the eighteenth century. It was necessary for the Federal Government to suppress a number of Northern newspapers for alleged seditious utter auces, and correspondents in the field were repeatedly refused permission to accompany forces, while others had privileges already acquired taken from them. At certain stages Of the war orders were issued to hang all correspondents who appeared on the field, a fact which shows that the calling 18 not without its disadvantages. However, public opinion in the long run asserted its right to have these unofficial representatives of the masses in the field, and the daily history of the great conflict between the North and the South, in spite of official obstacles, was duly presented each morning to the American public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Japan: And a Complete History of the War in the Far East The importance of the present conflict between Russia and Japan, which from its very outset has been prosecuted by the latter nation with an energy and efficiency which has astounded the civilized world, can not be overestimated. The commercial, financial and political interests of modern nations are so interlinked with one another that a serious disarrangement of the relations between any two of the great powers is certain to have far-reaching and serious results from the very beginning. And in the conflict now under consideration this applies to the United States and Canada, perhaps, in a fuller degree than to any power of the Old World, from the fact that an ocean alone divides them from the countries concerned, and that their relations with these countries promise to surpass those of any other lands. For half a century the great powers have been arming and making military preparations, until the European peoples have come to carry a staggering burden of taxation and personal service. These colossal preparations and the many conflicting interests of the powers all point to an ultimate outbreak in a universal contest for world supremacy which many serious writers profess to believe will be the prophesied "Armageddon" of the Scriptures. Book The Tide at Sunrise

Download or read book The Tide at Sunrise written by Denis Warner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russo-Japanese War was fought in the waters of the Yellow Sea and the Straits of Tsushima that divide Japan from Korea, and in the mountains of Manchuria, borrowed without permission from China. It was the first war to be fought with modern weapons. The Japanese had fought the Chinese at sea in 1894 and had gained a foothold in Manchuria by taking control of Port Authur. In 1895, however, Japan was forced to abandon its claims by the Russian fleet's presence in the Straits of Tsushima. Tsar Nicholas had obtained a window to the East for his empire and Japan had been humiliated. Tensions between the two countries would rise inexorably over the next decade. Around the world, no one doubted that little Japan would be no match for the mighty armies of Tsar Nicholas II. Yet Russia was in an advanced state of decay, the government corrupt and its troops inept and demoralized. Japan, meanwhile, was emerging from centuries of feudal isolation and becoming an industrial power, led by zealous nationalist warlords keen to lead the Orient to victory over the oppressive West. From the opening surprise attack on the Russian fleet at Port Authur in 1904, the Japanese out-fought and out-thought the Russians. This is a definitive account of one of the pivotal conflicts of the twentieth century whose impact was felt around the world.

Book The Russo Japanese War and its Shaping of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Russo Japanese War and its Shaping of the Twentieth Century written by Frank Jacob and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russo-Japanese War was in essence a colonial conflict between the expanding interests of Russia and Japan in East Asia. However, while appearing regional, the war itself in fact had a major global impact. The conflict and Japanese victory stimulated the Russian revolutionary movement in 1905 and hence the Russian Revolution of 1917. In addition, the Peace Treaty of Portsmouth created a tension between the United States and Japan that would establish the starting point for the road directly leading to Pearl Harbor in 1941. Eventually the war had a major impact on Germany, whose diplomats wanted to use the war to bind St Petersburg to Berlin, and whose military planners closely observed the events to prepare themselves for the next possible conflict. This book makes a strong argument for the consideration of initially minor events in the analysis of global history. By describing and analyzing the interrelationship between the events in East Asia and the major developments in Europe and the United States, it shows the significance of the Russo-Japanese War as a key factor in determining the most momentous historical events of the twentieth century: The First World War, the Second World War, and the Cold War.
