Book The Collins Class Submarine Story

Download or read book The Collins Class Submarine Story written by Peter Yule and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-02 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and outstanding military and industrial achievement, the Collins class submarine project was also plagued with difficulties and mired in politics. Its story is one of heroes and villains, grand passions, intrigue, lies, spies and backstabbing. It is as well a story of enormous commitment and resolve to achieve what many thought impossible. The building of these submarines was Australia's largest, most expensive and most controversial military project. From initiation in the 1981–2 budget to the delivery of the last submarine in 2003, the total cost was in excess of six billion dollars. Over 130 key players were interviewed for this book, and the Australian Defence Department allowed access to its classified archives and the Australian Navy archives. Vividly illustrated with photographs from the collections of the Royal Australian Navy and ASC Pty Ltd, The Collins Class Submarine Story: Steel, Spies and Spin, first published in 2008, is a riveting and accessibly written chronicle of a grand-scale quest for excellence.

Book Future Submarine Project Should Raise Periscope for Another Look

Download or read book Future Submarine Project Should Raise Periscope for Another Look written by Simon Cowan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future Submarine Project – replacement of Australia’s 6 ailing Collins Class submarines with 12 Future Submarines – has a potential cost of $40 billion. The Future Submarine is likely to involve a substantial redesign of an existing diesel powered submarine to meet Australia’s needs. This is a mistake; only nuclear submarines have the capabilities Australia needs. Risks inherent to evolutionary redesigned submarines like the Collins Class and systemic issues within the Royal Australian Navy will translate into serious issues for the Future Submarine. Like the Collins Class, the Future Submarine is likely to be very expensive to maintain and have poor reliability. A better option is to lease the US Navy’s Virginia Class nuclear powered submarine. It can cover greater distances, at greater speeds, and be deployed for longer than diesel powered submarines. It has better sensors and systems. It is a better submarine. Leasing Virginia Class submarines would save Australia more than $10 billion in acquisition costs and potentially up to three-quarters of a billion a year in operations costs. Arguments against nuclear powered submarines on the basis of skill shortages and defence self-reliance are flawed. Nuclear powered submarines are safe and the best option for Australia’s Future Submarine.

Book excerpt: Like all military acquisition programs worth billions of dollars, Australia’s decision to buy a new submarine fleet was expected to be a torturous process. But no one could have predicted the trail of wreckage it left behind, from the boulevards of Paris to the dockyards of Adelaide, as deep inside the Australian Government a secret group conspired to overthrow the winning French bid. In this tale of treachery and intrigue, Andrew Fowler exposes the lies and deception that so outraged the President of France. Interviewing many of the main people involved and talking to sources in Paris, London, Washington and Canberra, Fowler pieces together the plot to sink the French and switch to a nuclear-powered US submarine - a botched operation that severely compromised Australia’s ability to defend itself.

Book Implementing Australia s Nuclear Submarine Program

Download or read book Implementing Australia s Nuclear Submarine Program written by Andrew Nicholls and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 16 September 2021, the Australian Government announced that it would acquire a nuclear-powered submarine (SSN) capability with support from the UK and the US as the first measure of business under the AUKUS technology sharing partnership. Australia will need to make many choices—about the strategic partner, about the submarine design, about the build strategy, about schedule, and more. Those choices will involve hard prioritisation decisions about what’s most important. Is it capability, schedule, Australian industry content, or something else? This report examines the decision space available to the government.

Book Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century

Download or read book Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century written by Australian Government - Department of Defence - Defence Publishing Service and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Defence White Paper explains how the Government plans to strengthen the foundations of Australia's defence. It sets out the Government's plans for Defence for the next few years, and how it will achieve those plans. Most importantly, it provides an indication of the level of resources that the Government is planning to invest in Defence over coming years and what the Government, on behalf of the Australian people, expects in return from Defence. Ultimately, armed forces exist to provide Governments with the option to use force. Maintaining a credible defence capability is a crucial contributor to our security, as it can serve to deter potential adversaries from using force against us or our allies, partners and neighbours.
