Book Aids To Scouting

Download or read book Aids To Scouting written by Robert Baden-Powell and published by Loose Cannon. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1899 while serving in the 2nd Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell penned his sixth military book, Aids To Scouting. It was a non-typical training manual filled with personal stories of intrigue and even games. Its goal was to encourage the development of light reconnaissance scouting skills within the British Army. The book was well received by various armies of its time, including the French Army. His successful defense of Mafeking (1899-1900) in South Africa made Baden-Powell a well-known national hero in Britain. But what completely surprised Baden-Powell was that his book was eagerly taken up by teachers and youth groups to help organize outdoor activities and sport. He eventually embraced the idea of adapting his work into a new youth-oriented book, Scouting for Boys (1908) which went on to sell approx. 150 million copies to date. It was that follow-on book that firmly launched the international Boy Scouts movement. Aids to Scouting contains sections on the characters of a scout, as well as practical advice on observation, stealth/camouflage, map reading, sketching, tracking, reporting and care of horses. It presents these topics is a simple conversational style that makes it easy to read, and is illustrated with personal anecdotes of military adventures by the author. It gives scholars clear insights into his mindset and beliefs that served him well in the siege of Mafeking and shows a clear lineage to the formation of the tenets of his formation of the Boy Scouts. Anyone interested in the history of Boy Scouting will definitely want to read this interesting and formative book. (NOTE - Appendix C contents is missing in this Kindle version - but we hope to update the ebook with it once a suitable facsimile can be referenced). Book excerpt: An extraordinary journey alongside America's new generation of Eagle Scouts, who are discovering their purpose and bringing the values of Scouting to the world. Over the past century, Scouts have helped to guide the course of American history. But what does Scouting and the Eagle badge mean to the Scouts of today? How will they shape the future of Scouting and America itself? In Spirit of Adventure, Scouting expert and Eagle Scout Alvin Townley finds the answer. Townley traveled across the country and to the far corners of the globe to meet these young Eagle Scouts. He found them everywhere, continuing the life of adventure and service that they had begun in Scouting. He discovered them in Afghanistan providing medical care to villagers, in Australia saving coral reefs, at the Super Bowl and Olympic venues striving for victory, on desert cliffs and at inner-city schools teaching new lessons, in Africa bringing hope to children, and on the windswept deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz preparing for takeoff. Whether doctors, activists, servicemen, entrepreneurs, or teachers, these young men are changing the world through bold actions that capture the essence of the Scouting tradition. In Spirit of Adventure, Townley answers important questions about the future of Scouting and America, while revealing stories of service, courage, and pure excitement that introduce our nation to an inspiring new generation of leaders.

Book The Scout

Download or read book The Scout written by Ion Idriess and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout all the game of war, in every Age, there has been no task so fascinating, so alive with thrills, as that of the scout. Against an enemy army he plays a lone hand as does the sniper. But the scout's job is not to hide and kill, his is to press forward and see, but never be seen. And - he must return. Ion Idriess's Australian guerrilla manual presents a rare insight into one of the most vital functions of small-unit combat intelligence - scouting. Despite great technical achievements in modern military science, the small-unit commander must still rely heavily on the eyes, ears and stealth of his scouts. Details obscure techniques often overlooked in most U.S. Army and Marine scouting texts. The sixth book of the Australian Guerrilla series, The Scout, by Ion Idriess is now available. It is packed with knowledge and bush lore, and gives to any soldier who studies it most of the data necessary for the job of scouting. With the rest of the series it provides a small compact little work that, carried in the haversack, is a means of learning as you go. - Hobart Mercury, 1943.

Book The Bush Boy s Book

Download or read book The Bush Boy s Book written by Donald MacDonald and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely Australian, and the first Australian bushcraft book to be published and gain a wide readership, The Bush Boy's Book was published in 1911 and was considered compulsory bushcraft reading until at least the 1940s for all bushmen, scouts, cadets, army recruits, farmer's sons and early outdoor enthusiasts of all types. This was the book our grandfathers and great grandfathers ravenously pored over by gas, kerosene or candle light, committing every little hint and tip to memory. Today, over 100 years after it was first published, this fine book has been all but forgotten. It's time to bring it to a new generation of bushcrafters, scouts and outdoor recreation devotees. In October 1911, the Perth Western Mail's Literary Editor had this to say about the book: "The Bush Boy's Book, by Donald MacDonald, comprises 260 pages of excellently printed matter, which should prove invaluable to anyone, boy or man, who enjoys or wishes to know anything about life in the open. For Boy Scouts it will furnish a gold mine of information. The author has the trick of making his descriptions perfectly comprehensible. He would seem to have left nothing out - beds and bivouacs, camps, codes, camp cookery, fishing, game, guns, bushcraft, shooting, swimming, bush surgery, snakes, 'things worth knowing', traps and snares, tips and instruction on all manner of things that concern bushmen; how to extricate oneself when lost, how not to get lost at all, how to be happy though bushed, to make beds, meals and shelters, etc., etc. It is written for Australians, by Australians from an Australian point of view, and the letterpress is supplemented by diagrams that leave nothing to be misunderstood. Both the author and the publisher are to be congratulated on a praiseworthy work."
