Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australian Abroad: Branches From the Main Routes Round the World The following notes of travel are the outcome of a long holiday taken by an Anglo-Australian, who, after twenty-five years of active occupation in Melbourne, was enabled to indulge his long-cherished desire of making a tour of the globe. Without companions, save those whom he found by the way, and unassisted by guide-books, he travelled through most of the principal countries in each of the worlds five divisions, and recorded the impressions made upon his mind by all that he saw and heard while they were still fresh. The chapters in their present shape were actually written in the localities which they describe, and thence posted to a newspaper in Melbourne. In the columns of the Argus they have appeared at regular intervals during the last three years. Thus written, the Author ventures to think that they convey a more faithful description of the scenes and people visited than if they had been subsequently elaborated from the rough material of a diary, assisted by reference to the works of other travellers. The kindly welcome eagerly accorded to them in their serial form by his fellow-colonists has induced him to offer them collectively to the acceptance of a larger public at home. Book excerpt: Breaking open colonization to reveal tangled cultural and economic networks, Webs of Empire offers new paths into our colonial history. Linking Gore and Chicago, Maori and Asia, India and newspapers, whalers and writing, empire building becomes a spreading web of connected places, people, ideas, and trade. These links question narrow, national stories, while broadening perspectives on the past and the legacies of colonialism that persist today. Bringing together essays from two decades of prolific publishing on international colonial history, Webs of Empire establishes Tony Ballantyne as one of the leading historians of the British Empire.

Book A World History of Railway Cultures 1830 1930

Download or read book A World History of Railway Cultures 1830 1930 written by Matthew D. Esposito and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-29 with total page 2985 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World History of Railway Cultures, 1830-1930 is the first collection of primary sources to historicize the cultural impact of railways on a global scale from their inception in Great Britain to the Great Depression. Its dual purpose is to promote understanding of complex historical processes leading to globalization and generate interest in transnational and global comparative research on railways. In four volumes, organized by historical geography, this scholarly collection gathers rare out-of-print published and unpublished materials from archival and digital repositories throughout the world. It adopts a capsule approach that focuses on short selections of significant primary source content instead of redundant and irrelevant materials found in online data collections. The current collection draws attention to railway cultures through railroad reports, parliamentary papers, government documents, police reports, public health records, engineering reports, technical papers, medical surveys, memoirs, diaries, travel narratives, ethnographies, newspaper articles, editorials, pamphlets, broadsides, paintings, cartoons, engravings, photographs, art, ephemera, and passages from novels and poetry collections that shed light on the cultural history of railways. The editor’s original essays and headnotes on the cultural politics of railways introduce over 200 carefully selected primary sources. Students and researchers come to understand railways not as applied technological impositions of industrial capitalism but powerful, fluid, and idiosyncratic historical constructs.
