Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aural Surgery of the Present Day The old dispute for precedency between the eye and the ear admits of an easy solution, if we consider these two most important senses in their relation to the several ages of man, and to his external and internal life. Thus the child, during the second and third years of life, even when blindness exists, acquires, by the ear alone, easily and playfully as it were, by intercourse with those who speak, the power of speech, the true stamp of man. Those who are deaf born, or who become so before the expiration of the seventh year, either never acquire the power of speech in this natural way, or again forgetting what has been early learnt, remain or become dumb, and thus lose the most important as well as the most natural means for intellectual and spiritual culture. Acute hearing is, therefore, of inestimable value for the period of childhood. On the other hand, it is at the entrance into the period of adolescence, the possession of voice rendered sure, the elements of intellectual and spiritual life alike acquired, that the occurrence of deafness exercises as fatal an influence in checking the healthy development of the mind as the occurrence of blindness, so that at this period of life the importance of both of these organs of sense may be held to be equal. Book Practical Observations of Aural Surgery and the Nature and Treatment of Diseases of the Ear

This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations of Aural Surgery and the Nature and Treatment of Diseases of the Ear: With Illustrations IN offering an American edition of Mr. Wilde's work on Aural Surgery to the profession, it is confidently hoped that it will fill a void in our Medical literature which has long been felt, and which no work published in this country has ever been adequate to fill. No work has yet appeared in the English language, which has entered so extensively into the pathology and treatment of the Diseases of the Organ of Hearing, as that now offered to the pro fession; and it is to be earnestly hoped that the objects of the author - to lay down just principles for an accurate diagnosis of Diseases of the Ear; to rescue their treatment from empiricism, and found it upon the well-established laws of modern pathology, practical sur gery, and reasonable therapeutics - may be alike accomplished in the new world as in the old. Book The Surgical Anatomy and Surgery of the Ear Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Surgical Anatomy and Surgery of the Ear Classic Reprint written by Albert H. Tuttle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Anatomy and Surgery of the Ear The following production is the outcome of special study to determine the topographical anatomy of the ear. With refer ence to the more modern surgical procedures. Some cases of ear disease having come under my treatment which I thought might be benefited by operative measures, I set to work on the skull, making sections and drawings to obtain, as nearly as possible, an accurate knowledge of the dangers and difficulties of the operations before me. As a result of this study, I soon had a collection of plates which were interesting. At least to me; and thinking they might perhaps be of some help to others, I have gathered them together in the following work. The scope of which I have extended somewhat, so as to make a short treatise on the surgery of the ear. A work of this magnitude cannot include all the important questions on the subject of aural surgery and anatomy, and, although I have tried to select those which ofier the greatest interest from a surgical standpoint, I am fully aware that I have made many omissions, among which are subjects of great practical importance, and on the other hand have treated on cases which are of comparatively rare occurrence. I hope this fact will not be severely criticised, but allowed to pass as a peculiarity of the writer. I am obligated to Doctors H. O. Marcy, A. P. Clarke, and H. L. Morse, for the use of material during these investigations, and wish to express my thanks to the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Causes and Treatment of Deafness

Download or read book The Causes and Treatment of Deafness written by James Keene and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes and Treatment of Deafness: Being a Manual of Aural Surgery, for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine When the late Joseph Toynbee first wrote on this subject, England not only took the lead, but was the only country in which really scientific work in aural surgery was cultivated. Now, how ever, a great change has taken place, and German surgeons occupy that honourable position which we formerly held, while we have gradually but surely fallen into the rear. I am not vain enough to imagine that this small manual will take a place beside those elaborate treatises of Triiltsch, of Gruber, of Politzer, or of Toynbee, which will ever remain monuments of the industry and research of their authors; yet I hope it will be found a trustworthy resume of the more important points to be remembered in every-day practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Aural Surgery: Polypi and Fungus of the Ear Another characteristic of polypi is, a strong tendency to reproduce themselves after extraction. It is frequently a matter of great difficulty to prevent a polypus which has been excised, from growing afresh from the root. In this respect, however, there is a marked diflerence between the two classes above mentioned. An epithelial growth has an inveterate tendency to reproduction; whereas, a fibrous one is often eradicated by simple excision. I do not yet possess observations enough, to make this statement absolutely. But up to the present time, I do not find among my notes a single instance of a fibrous polypus which has reappeared, after the growth has been excised and its root once cauterized. Epithelial growths, on the contrary, have in most cases required active and persever ing treatment to destroy them. If future observations should prove that a fibrous polypus in the ear is not readily reproduced, while an epithelial one sprouts luxuriantly from the root, an important practical fact is added to our knowledge of these growths.
