Prosperity brings pride. And pride brings war again. Shall the world settle down to the faith that there is no redemption from an everlasting round of pride, war, poverty, peace, prosperity, pride, and war again? But it was not primarily to settle, or even study this problem that I crossed the ocean and the English Channel in winter. As a journalist publishing the Wall Street Journal, the Boston News Bureau, and the Philadelphia News Eu reau, and directing news - gathering for the bank ing and financial communities, I deemed it my duty to ascertain at close hand the financial fac tors in this war, and the financial results there from. Book The Audacious Ascetic

Download or read book The Audacious Ascetic written by Flagg Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-11 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2002, over 1500 audiotapes were discovered in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in a house once occupied by Osama bin Laden. The Audacious Ascetic is the first book to explore this extraordinary archive. It details how Islamic cultural, legal, theological and linguistic vocabularies shaped militants' understandings of al-Qa'ida, and, more controversially, challenges the notion that the group's original adversary was America and the 'far enemy'. Miller argues that Western security agencies' 'management' of Bin Laden's growing reputation went awry. When magnified through global media coverage, narratives of al-Qa'ida's coherence were exploited by Osama and his militant supporters for their own ends. Focusing on over a dozen previously unpublished speeches by Bin Laden as well as on discussions by top al-Qa'ida leaders and Arab- Afghans, Miller chronicles the Saudi radical's evolving relationship with a host of Muslim insurgencies that found his stripe of asceticism (zuhd) tactically useful, especially when circulated via audiotape. These recordings also reveal militants' disenchantment when Bin Laden, marginalized through the '90s, began pandering to Western television networks in his attempt to direct heterodox Islamist armed struggles against America. Such audio evidence exposes al-Qa'ida's lack of coordination before 9-11 and invites scrutiny of dominant narratives of Western law enforcement, intelligence and terrorism analysts.

Book The Scientific American War Book

Download or read book The Scientific American War Book written by Albert Allis Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific American War Book: The Mechanism and Technique of Warfare This volume is not a history of the great European war, nor will it depict its horrors - there are already too many books on the war - but it does give a succinct account of what war really means, how it is carried on, how men are gotten up to position, fed, bathed, fought, imprisoned, wounded and killed. It describes how forts are built and reduced, how mines are laid and destroyed, how barbed wire entanglements are made and destroyed, how submarines carry on their audacious and successful enterprises. It is like no other book, being very largely from the pens of high army and navy ofiicers whose names cannot be used in many cases owing to departmental orders. This book could never have been compiled except from the files of the scientific american, the foremost authority on Naval and Military affairs in the United States. All matter with trifling exceptions is derived from this source which is therefore a guarantee of reliability in a sea of impossible newspaper misinformation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping narrative of one of the Civil War’s most consequential engagements. In the spring of 1864, the newly installed Union commander Ulysses S. Grant did something none of his predecessors had done before: He threw his army against the wily, audacious Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia over and over again. At Spotsylvania Court House, the two armies shifted from stalemate in the Wilderness to slugfest in the mud. Most commonly known for the horrific twenty-two-hour hand-to-hand combat in the pouring rain at the Bloody Angle, the battle of Spotsylvania Court House actually stretched from May 8 to 21, 1864—fourteen long days of battle and maneuver. Grant, the irresistible force, hammering with his overwhelming numbers and unprecedented power, versus Lee, the immovable object, hunkered down behind the most formidable defensive works yet seen on the continent. Spotsylvania Court House represents a chess match of immeasurable stakes between two master opponents. This clash is detailed in A Season of Slaughter: The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, May –21, 1864. A Season of Slaughter is part of the new Emerging Civil War Series offering compelling, easy-to-read overviews of some of the Civil War’s most important stories. The masterful storytelling is richly enhanced with hundreds of photos, illustrations, and maps. “[A] wonderful book for anyone interested in learning about the fighting around Spotsylvania Court House or who would like to tour the area. It is well written, easy to read, and well worth the price.” —Civil War News

Book Democracy on Trial in the World War Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy on Trial, in the World War This ambitious program was not the dream of a few German visionaries or jingoes. It was an actual plan, care fully worked out in detail by the war-mad clique which rules Germany. The German people, it is true, were not consulted in the matter; there was no need to consult them, for Germany is not ruled by her people, but by the Kaiser, supported by the military leaders and the Prussian aristo cracy. So audacious and so insolent was this German plan of world power that it startles our belief; yet in the fate ful year of 1914 it came near to realization. Now strikes the hour for Germany's rising power, wrote one of her editors1 as the German armies were launched across neutral Belgium to strike France at a point where she would not expect attack. Only the heroic resistance of the little Bel gian army, the defeat of the German hordes by France in the battle of the Marne, and England's unbroken power on the sea, prevented Germany's dream of world empire from becoming an accomplished fact. Book The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson

Download or read book The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson written by Chris Mackowski and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive look at the final hours of the Confederacy’s most audacious general. May 1863. The Civil War was in its third spring, and Confederate Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan Jackson stood at the peak of his fame. He had risen from obscurity to become “Old Stonewall,” adored across the South and feared and respected throughout the North. On the night of May 2, however, just hours after Jackson executed the most audacious maneuver of his career and delivered a crushing blow against an unsuspecting Union army at Chancellorsville, disaster struck. The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson recounts the events of that fateful night—considered one of the most pivotal moments of the war—and the tense vigil that ensued as Jackson struggled with a foe even he could not defeat. From Guinea Station, where Jackson crosses the river to rest under the shade of the trees, the story follows Jackson’s funeral and burial, the strange story of his amputated arm, and the creation and restoration of the building where he died (now known as the Stonewall Jackson Shrine). This newly revised and expanded second edition features more than 50 pages of fresh material, including almost 200 illustrations, maps, and eye-catching photos. New appendices allow readers to walk in Jackson’s prewar footsteps through his adopted hometown of Lexington, Virginia; consider the ways Jackson’s memory has been preserved through monuments, memorials, and myths; and explore the misconceptions behind the Civil War’s great What-If: “What if Stonewall had survived his wounds?” With the engaging prose of master storytellers, Chris Mackowski and Kristopher D. White make The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson a must-read for Civil War novices and buffs alike.

Reflecting sincerely, and, I hope, without immodesty, on the great British efforts, it seems to me that the evil of improvisation, and the advantage of preparation, do not lie on the sur face, and cannot be easily detected. A nation of sportsmen and business men can rapidly create all that makes a great army, men, officers, material, and enthusiasm. One thing, however, cannot be created offhand and at will, but is the fruit of long. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
