Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Manufacture of Hydrogen Though our national requirements are perhaps the greatest, it is noteworthy that our contribution to the technology of hydrogen is probably the least of any of the Great Powers; so, should it happen that this work in any way stimulates interest, resulting in further improvement in the technology of the subject, the author will feel himself more than amply rewarded. Book A Recalculation of the Atomic Weights Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Recalculation of the Atomic Weights Classic Reprint written by Frank Wigglesworth Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Recalculation of the Atomic Weights Suppose now that for every element we had a goodly number Of atomic weight ratios, connecting it with at least a dozen other elements, and all measured with reasonable accuracy. These hundreds Of ratios could then be treated as equations of Observation, reduced to linear form, and combined by the general method of least squares into normal equations. All errors would thus be distributed, never becoming cumulative; and the normal equations, solved once for all, would give the atomic weights Of all the elements simultaneously. The process would be laborious but the result would be the closest possible approach to accuracy. The data as yet are inadequate, although some small groups Of ratios may be handled in that way; but in time the method is sure to be applied, and indeed to be the only general method applicable. Even if every ratio was subject to some small constant error, this, balanced against the similar errors Of other ratios, would become accidental or unsystematic with reference to the entire mass Of material, and would practically vanish from the final means. Concerning this subject Of constant and accidental errors, a word may be said here. My Own method Of discussion eliminates the latter, which are removable by ordinary averaging; but the constant errors, vicious and untractable, remain, at least partially. Still, where many ratios are considered, even the systematic errors may in part compensate each other, and do less harm than might be expected. They have, moreover, a peculiarity which deserves some attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determinations of Atomic Weights: Further Investigation Concerning the Atomic Weights of Silver, Lithium and Chlorine; The Harvard Determinations of Atomic Weights, Between 1870 and 1910; Methods Used in Precise Chemical Investigation Without attempting to give a complete historical discussion, the most important results of other investigations may be mentioned. The inter esting and valuable results of Dixon and Edgar, l of W. A. Noyes and H. C. P. Weber,2 and of Edgar alone3 upon the quantitative synthesis Of hydrochloric acid furnish less direct evidence upon the matter in hand, for they need the introduction of two other ratios, namely, that of hydrogen to oxygen and that of chlorine to silver, in order to solve the problem. Book The Corpuscular Theory of Matter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Corpuscular Theory of Matter Classic Reprint written by J. J. Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corpuscular Theory of Matter In Chapter VII. I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atomic Theory Simple bodies combine in definite proportions. This is one of the most firmly established truths of natliral philosophy. It includes the two following facts: Firstly, the relative weight of combining bodies is always fixed in every combination; secondly, the numbers which express these relations are interproportional for all kinds of combinations. We must clearly understand the meaning of these propositions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Chemical Tables Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chemical Tables Classic Reprint written by Stephen P. Sharples and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Tables Many tables have been 'introduced, which are not in common use in the laboratory. This has been done partly for the sake of completeness, but principally because the progress of science continually brings the physical and chemical properties of bodies into closer relations with each other. Thus the researches of Landolt have recently shown that the chemical constitution of a mixture or compound may, in many cases, be deduced with accuracy from its optical properties alone. The tables usually found in works on chemistry, giving the vapor densi ties of bodies referred to air taken as unity, have been omitted in this work, for the reason that it is always more convenient to refer gases and vapors to hydrogen as the unit of density as well as of weight and volume, and the vapor density is then very simply and directly related to the atomic weight. The table of wave lengths on page 148 will be found convenient for use in connection with Kirchhoff's chart of the spectrum. With its assistance the wave length of any observed line may be determined with sufficient accuracy by the ordinary methods of interpolation. The Editor will be greatly obliged for any criticisms or suggestions which may enable him to render the work more perfect in case it should pass to a second edition. Book Organic Geochemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Organic Geochemistry Classic Reprint written by IRVING A. BREGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Geochemistry The 5 major constituents of carbonaceous substances are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. These elements are all Of low atomic weight and are thought to be products of low-temperature stellar reactions. They are widely distributed through the cosmos and play major roles in the thermonuclear processes of the stars. moreover, such isotopes as 6c, 8c1, 16832 and 16836 have total proton and neutron numbers divisible by 4 and are particularly abundant. Carbon, hydrogen, and a number of other elements normally associated with carbonaceous substances have been detected in interstellar space, nebulae, stars, planetary atmospheres, and comets. Table 1 contains a summary Of abundances Of the first 28 elements of the periodic table as they occur in typical cosmic settings. It is obvious from Table 1 that meteorites have lost a very high propor tion of their lighter elements, presumably through escape because Of low gravitational fields. The losses of hydrogen, because of marked volatility of its simpler compounds, and of nitrogen, because of its relatively low chemical affinity, are particularly important with respect to carbonaceous substances. The tremendous abundances of the elements making up carbonaceous substances, C, H, N, O, and S, in most stars, and in the universe in general, direct one's attention toward their origin and distribution. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Non-Adiabatic Treatment of Elastic Scattering of Electrons by Atomic Hydrogen We have taken the attitude that it is less important to satisfy the boundary conditions at infinity than it is to describe accurately the effect of the interaction of the incoming electron with the hydrogen atom. We describe the effect of the polarization of the atom by the incoming electron by saying that the effective charge distribution of the atomic system.in a static description is given by e-7r, where 7 l in atomic units. The effect, then, of the polarization is to spread out the charge distribution of the atomic system, 7 is a parameter which is to be determined; it would probably be different for different angular distribution of the incoming electron. It may even be a function of the energy of the incoming electron, although we have not used such a refined model. This effective charge distribution for the bound electron is now substituted in a Hartree, or hartree-fock, type of calculation, and the resultant integro-differential equation is integrated numerically on the ibm 70h machine.
