Book The Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar Population of the Matamek River Quebec

Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar Population of the Matamek River Quebec written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1967 to 1984 the Matamek Research Station, located near Sept-Iles, Quebec, was the focus of a research program on salmonid production in boreal river ecosystems. Research was conducted under the auspices of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and in cooperation with the Ministere du Loisir, de la Chasse et de la Peche du Quebec and representatives of several universities in Canada and the United States. One of the central activities throughout the history of the Station was monitoring of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the Matamek River. All salmon life history stages were involved, although the greatest effort was spent in estimates of parr population size at select sites and in estimates of population size, age and sex ratios of sea-run adults entering the river to spawn. Effort and methods were not consistent from year to year due to changes in program focus and improvements in techniques. Nonetheless, we believe the data represent the only long-term record for an Atlantic salmon population on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence. Heretofore, information on Atlantic salmon from the Matamek River was available only in published works or in the Matamek Annual Reports published by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Because of the potential value for analyses of salmon population dynamics and life history, we have assembled the raw data, with neither analysis nor interpretation, in this report. During the period of 1980-1984, considerable effort was exerted in collecting data from original sources (field notebooks, scale envelopes, etc.) and in correcting errors in the data. We cannot, of course, guarantee complete accuracy. Nonetheless, this collection of information is the most complete and accurate compilation possible at this time. The data are presented as records for individual fish, and are ordered by date and by life history stage. We include a key to the designations of columns and to conventions used in coding data. All entries are raw data as initially recorded and coded; no analyses are available beyond those used by various individual authors in their preparation of reports or publications. While these data are made available for general use through this compilation, we request that proper acknowledgment be given the Matamek Research Program of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, under whose directorship this compilation was accomplished.

Book excerpt: Emphasis is placed on characteristics of salmon from the Northwest Miramichi in support of a review of the risks to long-term fitness of wild Atlantic salmon of a proposed supplementation program consisting of the captive-rearing in freshwater of wild salmon smolts to the adult stage and release back to the river to spawn. [...] Freshwater dynamics of Atlantic salmon are examined to assist in the evaluation of the risks and /or benefits of the proposed supplementation activity in achieving one of the stated goals which is to increase abundance of adult Atlantic salmon to the river. [...] The two main branches of the Miramichi River are each comprised of two main rivers which join near the head of tide; the Renous and Southwest Miramichi rivers join at the head of tide in the Southwest Branch of the Miramichi, the Little Southwest and Northwest Miramichi rivers join at the head of tide in the Northwest branch of the Miramichi (Fig. [...] There was no statistically significant association between the proportion of the early tagged salmon which ascended to the facilities prior to September 1 and neither the elevation nor the distance of the facility from the head of tide (Fig.

Book Freshwater Migration and Behaviour of Wild Adult Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in the Miramichi River New Brunswick Canada

Download or read book Freshwater Migration and Behaviour of Wild Adult Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in the Miramichi River New Brunswick Canada written by Ryan M. Carrow and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the Miramichi River, New Brunswick, Canada, had the largest population of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) in North America but has now failed to consistently meet conservation targets set by Fisheries and Oceans Canada for over two decades. Miramichi River salmon return as mature adults to their natal river in either an early (June/early July) or late (September/October) run group, where they enter the river and migrate upstream to spawning areas. The specific, in-river migratory behaviour of the two temporally distinct runs and the habitats utilized during migration are poorly understood in the Miramichi River. In this thesis, radio telemetry was used to monitor adult migration behaviour and habitat selection for early and late run salmon in the Miramichi River. On average, early run salmon migrated 1.5 river km per day (rkm/d), and selected deep habitat (>0.5 m) with large substrate sizes. Salmon started to use thermal refugia when river temperatures reached 19 °C, and increasingly at temperatures > 22 °C. In autumn, river conditions appeared to delay late run salmon from entering freshwater for weeks. Late run salmon migrated between 1.0 – 2.4 rkm/d on average, selected deep habitat types (>0.5 m) with cobble substrate, spawned between mid-October to late November, and began migrating downstream after spawning. Fisheries managers can use this information for better conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of Miramichi Atlantic Salmon population and their critical habitat.

Book Abundance of Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in the Big Salmon River New Brunswick from 1951 to 2002

Download or read book Abundance of Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in the Big Salmon River New Brunswick from 1951 to 2002 written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper compiles data from the Big Salmon River stock collected since 1951 and uses the data to assess changes in Atlantic salmon population since that time. The maximum likelihood method is used to model the catch-effort, juvenile electrofishing, adult fence, stream-side, & dive counts and the redd count data to obtain estimates of the annual escapements & returns during the time period of interest. The results indicate a range of spawning run sizes and several estimates of the percent decline in the Big Salmon River Atlantic salmon population over the last 30 years.

Book Pacific Salmon their Ecosystems

Download or read book Pacific Salmon their Ecosystems written by Deanna J. Stouder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium "Pacific Salmon and Their Ecosystems: Status and Future Options',' and this book resulted from initial efforts in 1992 by Robert J. Naiman and Deanna J. Stouder to examine the problem of declining Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). Our primary goal was to determine informational gaps. As we explored different scientific sources, state, provincial, and federal agencies, as well as non-profit and fishing organizations, we found that the information existed but was not being communicated across institutional and organizational boundaries. At this juncture, we decided to create a steering committee and plan a symposium to bring together researchers, managers, and resource users. The steering committee consisted of members from state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and private industry (see Acknowledgments for names and affiliations). In February 1993, we met at the University of Washington in Seattle to begin planning the symposium. The steering committee spent the next four months developing the conceptual framework for the symposium and the subsequent book. Our objectives were to accomplish the following: (1) assess changes in anadromous Pacific Northwest salmonid populations, (2) examine factors responsible for those changes, and (3) identify options available to society to restore Pacific salmon in the Northwest. The symposium on Pacific Salmon was held in Seattle, Washington, January 10-12, 1994. Four hundred and thirty-five people listened to oral presentations and examined more than forty posters over two and a half days. We made a deliberate attempt to draw in speakers and attendees from outside the Pacific Northwest.
