Book excerpt: Recent times have seen a worldwide human urge to remember and speak about even the most painful moments of authoritarian regimes, using the memory process for both healing and learning. In this first book on the Ateneo de Manila during martial law, we re-live memories of the university from 1972 to 1982, shedding light on what used to be whispered stories of campus subversion and student arrests. The essays in this book deal with the student movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and then with actions, conflicts, and unities within the school. Subsequent chapters cover student publications, organizations, and ideological involvements. Other sections of the book highlight the participation of faculty, administration, social development professionals, and the Jesuit community in university activism. The last chapter serves as an epilogue, linking the deepening social involvement of the Ateneo of the 1970s with the political struggles of the early 1980s. The book also contains vignettes from former students, faculty, administrators, professionals and Jesuits who write about their memories of the period. Some relevant documents which are cited in the book and mark the era, but which are often difficult to access, have also been assembled as appendices.

He is less concerned with defining Duterte as a fascist, populist, warlord, and traditional politician than he is with examining what Duterte does: how he rules, the rhetoric of his humor, his use of obscenity to stoke fear, and his projection of masculinity and misogyny. Using editorial cartoons, the author proves that pictorial documents are potentially as rich in information as written documents. This book highlights the perspective of the popular press instead of the commonly solicited viewpoints of policy makers. More importantly, the author reads the editorial cartoons as symbolic language where images and text reveal more than what they signify at a cursory glance. By so doing, the author has identified, interpreted, and analyzed different levels of synthesis used to represent the Japanese in Philippine editorial cartoons of this period. While many of the symbols used were reflective of the inherent tensions in Philippines-Japan relations, factors such as conventions of the medium of cartooning, individual styles, and personal interpretation also significantly affected the occurrence, change, and continuity of the images.

More specifically, it focuses on the building processes of convents inside Intramuros, including the structures built by the same religious provinces in Mexico. The research is based both on the review of new archival sources from around the world and on fieldwork at the construction remains in Manila, concluding that, for the various traditions significantly contributing to its architecture, the city must be considered as an example of global hybridization during this period. The convents of Manila are not just a marginal consequence of the New Spanish traditions but a phenomenon of globalization, part of Philippine history.
