Book Revelation and Mystery in Ancient Judaism and Pauline Christianity

Download or read book Revelation and Mystery in Ancient Judaism and Pauline Christianity written by Markus Bockmuehl and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The theme of revealed heavenly mysteries was a commonplace in Judaism, from which it passed on to Christianity. Markus Bockmuehl outlines how this theme developed, by showing where ideas of revelation and mystery coalesce. . . . An interesting and very thorough study."--Journal of Biblical Literature"A thoughtful and illuminating study of a subject which, rather surprisingly in the light of its centrality to the question of Christian origins, has not hitherto been investigated in detail. Whereas both 'revelation' and 'mystery' have been studied separately in the context of early Jewish and Christian literature, Bockmuehl's original contribution is to examine the interconnectedness of the two ideas."--Journal of Jewish Studies"This book is an excellent contribution to biblical scholarship. It synthesizes the light that a biblically based mystery sheds on revelation and revelation sheds on mystery. . . . Bockmuehl treats admirably many difficult passages and scholarly disputes. . . . He develops the progress of biblical understanding regarding revelation and mystery, carefully balancing analysis with synthesis--a talent that is somewhat rare of late." --Journal of Ecumenical Studies"A most useful study. . . . Bockmuehl has brought together material from an enormously wide range of primary and secondary literature, for which we are greatly in his debt." --Journal of Theological Studies"For single authors like Philo, Josephus, and especially Paul, Bockmuehl's studies significantly add to the discussion." --Religious Studies Review"Bockmuehl examines the concepts of revelation and mystery, not as distinct entities, but in their theological interplay: the revelation of heavenly mysteries. . . . This book's breadth and depth will repay the attentive reader." --Journal for the Study of the New Testament

Book The Mystery Religions and Christianity

Download or read book The Mystery Religions and Christianity written by S. Angus and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Reprint of the 1925 Edition. Facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This book is generally considered the most useful single work in English on the subject and provides a solid background in the various forms of religious experience that are grouped together under the term Mystery-Religious. Mystery religion were any of various secret cults of the Greco-Roman world that offered to individuals religious experiences not provided by the official public religions. They originated in tribal ceremonies that were performed by peoples in many parts of the world. Whereas in these tribal communities almost every member of the clan or the village was initiated, initiation in Greece became a matter of personal choice. The mystery religions reached their peak of popularity in the first three centuries a.d. Their origin, however, goes back to the earlier centuries of Greek history. The main characterization of these religions is the secrecy associated with the particulars of the initiation and the ritual practice, which was never revealed to outsiders. The most famous mysteries of Greco-Roman antiquity were the Eleusinian Mysteries, which were of considerable antiquity and predated the Greek Dark Ages. The mystery schools flourished in Late Antiquity. Contents: Orientation: the historical crises of the Graeco-Roman world in their bearing upon the mystery-religions and Christianity -- What is a mystery-religion? -- The three stages of a mystery -- The appeal of the mystery-religions (a) -- The appeal of the mystery-religions (b) -- The defects of the mysteries and their ultimate failure -- The victory of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, having adopted the allegorical method, has disregarded many plain truths of the Scripture. In so doing, they may have missed the true meaning of the "Fellowship of the Mystery." There many articles and Web sites on the internet and many books written on this subject, many have attempted to uncover hidden or secret meanings in Biblical text about the Fellowship of the Mystery. Although some books have touched the surface of this subject, they have relied on allegorical interpretations; no text has immersed the reader into this controversial subject. This book sheds light on the many mysteries of the Bible to explain the true character and destiny of both Christians and Jews. Christians and Jews are distinct, they are different, yet together they constitute the family of God. Together they are the Fellowship of the Mystery. Readers of this genre will immediately be immersed into a previously unexplained world. For those left with questions, the book provides a question and-answer section at the end.You are invited to take part in a journey to learn the true relationship between the Old and New Testaments and explore God's plan for humanity. Book excerpt: This brief outline of the comparatively meagre information we possess on what at one time was the most widely spread mystery-institution in the Roman empire, is introductory to the following small volume which will deal with the only Mithriac Ritual known to us. In dealing with this exceedingly instructive Ritual I found that the limits of one booklet would not suffice for an adequate introduction; and without this, I fear, many readers will not be in a position to appreciate the Ritual at its just value.
