  • Author : Christopher Hitchens
  • Publisher : Random House

  • ISBN : 0525511962
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book The Four Horsemen written by Christopher Hitchens and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett filmed a landmark discussion about modern atheism. The video went viral. Now in print for the first time, the transcript of their conversation is illuminated by new essays from three of the original participants and an introduction by Stephen Fry. At the dawn of the new atheist movement, the thinkers who became known as “the four horsemen,” the heralds of religion's unraveling—Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett—sat down together over cocktails. What followed was a rigorous, pathbreaking, and enthralling exchange, which has been viewed millions of times since it was first posted on YouTube. This is intellectual inquiry at its best: exhilarating, funny, and unpredictable, sincere and probing, reminding us just how varied and colorful the threads of modern atheism are. Here is the transcript of that conversation, in print for the first time, augmented by material from the living participants: Dawkins, Harris, and Dennett. These new essays, introduced by Stephen Fry, mark the evolution of their thinking and highlight particularly resonant aspects of this epic exchange. Each man contends with the most fundamental questions of human existence while challenging the others to articulate their own stance on God and religion, cultural criticism, spirituality, debate with people of faith, and the components of a truly ethical life. Praise for The Four Horsemen “This bracing exchange of ideas crackles with energy. It’s fascinating to watch four first-class minds explore a rugged intellectual terrain. . . . The text affords a different, more reflective way of processing the truly vital exchange of ideas. . . . I commend the book to those seeking an honest reckoning with their religion—and those curious about how the world looks from a rigorously naturalistic and atheistic point of view.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “The full, electrifying transcript of the one and only conversation between the quartet of luminaries dubbed the ‘four horsemen’ of the New Atheism, which took place in Washington, D.C., in 2007. Among the vast range of ideas and questions they discuss: Is it ever possible to win a war of ideas? Is spirituality the preserve of the religious? And, are there any truths you would rather not know?”—The Bookseller (UK) (starred review)

  • Author : Rev. Dr. Gary Alexander Byrd
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2023-10-29
  • ISBN : 1665553839
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Keys to the Kingdom II written by Rev. Dr. Gary Alexander Byrd and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-10-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keys to the Kingdom II reveals the hidden prophecies in the Bible by reimagining the scriptures. Keys II challenges the traditional view or interpretation of both Genesis and Revelation, by engaging ancient astrology and the Bible Numeric. What emerges is a new truth in which Adam is not the first man God created. This assertion only confirms the overwhelming evidence of the earliest humanoids existence on Earth, as there is a long fossil record which predates Adam by a million years or more. Evolutionist vs. Creationist argument has raged for over a hundred years, with either side satisfied with the others explanation. There is nothing wrong with the Bible, what is problematic is man’s interpretation of the text, which early church fathers and theologians never consider Earth’s long anthropological, archeological, and astrological past. By revealing the ancient astrology, which is hidden in plain sight, Revelation’s apocalyptic code is finally cracked. What is revealed is seventy to eighty percent of the Book of Revelation has already happened. Biblical prophecy is real and trustworthy, as this terminal generation will continue to experience a number of unprecedented hardships and disasters, as the fulfillment of End of Days prophecies are now upon the world.

  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Bunker written by Bradley Garrett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since prehistory, bunkers have been built as protection from cataclysmic social and environmental forces, and as places of power and transformation. Today, the bunker has become the extreme expression of our greatest fears- from pandemics to climate change and nuclear war. And once you look, it doesn't take long to start seeing bunkers everywhere. In Bunker, acclaimed urban explorer and cultural geographer Bradley Garrett explores the global and rapidly growing movement of 'prepping' for social and environmental collapse, or 'Doomsday'. From the 'dread merchants' hustling safe spaces in the American mid-West to eco-fortresses in Thailand, from geoscrapers to armoured mobile bunkers, Bunker is a brilliant, original and never less than deeply disturbing story from the frontlines of the way we live now, an illuminating reflection on our age of disquiet and dread that brings it into new, sharp focus. The bunker, Garrett shows, is all around us, in malls, airports, gated communities, the vehicles we drive. Most of all, he shows, it's in our minds.

Book The Word Volume 7 1989 1992

Download or read book The Word Volume 7 1989 1992 written by Elizabeth Clare Prophet and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is the avatar of the ages-the same yesterday, today and forever. We knew him when he walked the streets of Atlantis and Lemuria. We also knew him in eras of darkness, when he sought to lead men to the light. His message did not begin with the Bible, nor did it end with the Book of Revelation. He has never stopped speaking to his own. Two thousand years ago, he foretold a time of tribulation-the end of an age. That time has come. It is the era when the mystery of God should be finished, when the Two Witnesses should prophecy "a thousand two hundred and threescore days." And so Jesus once more delivers his Word to a world in transition. As always, the message is one of judgement to the fallen angels, admonishment to those who would walk in the light, hope for all who are striving on the path, and the vision of golden age to come. This volume includes dictations by Jesus Christ through Elizabeth Clare Prophet given from 1989 to 1992.

Download or read book A Rebirth of Images written by Austin Farrer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book St. John's Revelation is approached as a great and singular theological poem. The author tries to see how the poem arose in an inspired mind, by what processes of divination its author explored the realm of supernatural truth, how he used the images of his Old Testament faith and gave them fresh meaning in the context of his scheme. Here the reader may follow the workings of a late first-century Christian imagination in which the Scriptures and the stars, the liturgy of the temple and the magic of numbers, the elements of nature and the march of human history are closely interwoven.

Book Astrology and Reformation

  • Author : Robin B. Barnes

Download or read book Astrology and Reformation written by Robin B. Barnes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 Roland H. Bainton Book Prize of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference During the sixteenth century, no part of the Christian West saw the development of a more powerful and pervasive astrological culture than the very home of the Reformation movement--the Protestant towns of the Holy Roman Empire. While most modern approaches to the religious and social reforms of that age give scant attention to cosmological preoccupations, Robin Barnes argues that astrological concepts and imagery played a key role in preparing the ground for the evangelical movement sparked by Martin Luther in the 1520s, as well as in shaping the distinctive characteristics of German evangelical culture over the following century. Spreading above all through cheap printed almanacs and prognostications, popular astrology functioned in paradoxical ways. It contributed to an enlarged and abstracted sense of the divine that led away from clericalism, sacramentalism, and the cult of the saints; at the same time, it sought to ground people more squarely in practical matters of daily life. The art gained unprecedented sanction from Luther's closest associate, Philipp Melanchthon, whose teachings influenced generations of preachers, physicians, schoolmasters, and literate layfolk. But the apocalyptic astrology that came to prevail among evangelicals involved a perpetuation, even a strengthening, of ties between faith and cosmology, which played out in beliefs about nature and natural signs that would later appear as rank superstitions. Not until the early seventeenth century did Luther's heirs experience a "crisis of piety" that forced preachers and stargazers to part ways. Astrology and Reformation illuminates an early modern outlook that was both practical and prophetic; a world that was neither traditionally enchanted nor rationally disenchanted, but quite different from the medieval world of perception it had displaced.

Book The Church Universal and Triumphant

Download or read book The Church Universal and Triumphant written by Bradley C. Whitsel and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bradley Whitsel's vivid account of the Church Universal Triumphant (CUT), from its modest origin as a tiny fragment of the esoteric community to its growth into a wealthy and formidable organization in the 1960s and early 1970s, constitutes one of the most compelling stories to emerge from the larger movement of American religion. Founded in 1958 by the charismatic Mark Prophet—and subseqently headed by his wife, Elizabeth Clare Prophet—the Church combines New Age beliefs with an anti-Communist mindset based on the conviction that America was imperiled by left-wing enemies. In his deft examination of the group's evolution, Whitsel uses internal church documents as well as other resources to trace CUT's development of a dark apocalyptic division. He places the Church Universal and Triumphant within the context of other millennial groups sharing a similar psychology of crisis and disaster, and analyze the church's interactions with its political environment. This book will appeal to general readers as well as political scientists and sociologists specializing in the fields of political sociology, millennialism, and radical religio-policical movements.
