Book The Association Between Internet Use and Characteristics of Social Networking for Middle Aged and Older Adults

Download or read book The Association Between Internet Use and Characteristics of Social Networking for Middle Aged and Older Adults written by David L. Hogeboom and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that strong social networks have a positive effect on physical and psychological well-being. Research suggests that Internet use may affect social networks. However it is not clear if Internet use has a positive or negative effect on social networks. One theory suggests that Internet use displaces face-to-face contacts and off line social participation. Another theory suggests Internet use replaces high quality face-to-face ties with weaker online ties. Other studies however suggest the Internet has a positive effect on social networks. Because older adults have shrinking social networks, but may have more discretionary time than other age groups, the Internet may be a tool that can be used to strengthen social networks for this age group. METHODS: This study uses a sample from the 2004 wave of the Health and Retirement Survey to assess the association between Internet use and social networks. Age is tested for moderation of the association between Internet use and social networks. Oversampling and design effects of the sample are accounted for using weights and special procedures in SAS version 9.1. Univariate, bivariate and linear regression analyses are employed for the examination of associations and moderation. RESULTS: In regression models (n=2,284) considering a number of control variables, frequency of contact with friends, frequency of contact with family, and attendance at organizational meetings (not including religious services), were found to have a significant positive association with Internet use, while in-person contact with family members (other than children) had a significant negative association with Internet use. Age was not found to moderate any of the significant associations between Internet use and measures of social networking. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest the Internet could be used as a tool in interventions designed to strengthen social networks for older adults and that policies to increase the availability of the Internet should be considered. Internet use is not associated with a decrease in social participation based on attendance of religious services or other organizations. The amount of time spent on Internet use is not considered in this study and is a limitation.

Book Internet Use and Mental Health well being in Old Age

Download or read book Internet Use and Mental Health well being in Old Age written by Ronald W. Berkowsky and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The escalating pressures put on the US healthcare system, due in part to the growing needs of the expanding older adult population, has motivated research dedicated to more fully understanding the mental health and mental well-being needs of this population and ways to address these needs and alleviate the pressure on the healthcare system. An increasing area of interest is in examining the role information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as Internet-connected computers and smartphones, in the health of older adults. Research has shown that ICTs can successfully be used to help treat, manage, and cope with mental health/well-being issues, but previous literature also finds that ICTs can contribute to mental health/well-being outcomes more directly. While studies have shown that ICTs may benefit older adults with regards to mental health/well-being, less is known through what mechanisms this relationship is enacted. This study uses data from the Health and Retirement Study to compare Internet-using older adults (aged 65+) with non-users on depression, life satisfaction, loneliness, personal growth, and purpose in life. Specific attention is given to examining the potential mediating roles of social integration (i.e., quantity of social ties) and social support (i.e., quality of social ties), as a Durkheimian perspective of Internet use argues that Internet use can be both beneficial and detrimental to an individual's social life, and changes in social life through Internet use can in turn affect mental health/well-being. Results of cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses finds Internet users, compared to iv non-users, typically enjoy more favorable mental health/well-being outcomes. Measures of social integration and social support are found to mediate the relationship between Internet use and mental health/well-being, but only partially. Additional analyses find that demographic characteristics, such as income and functional limitations, moderate the relationship between Internet use and mental health/well-being in older adults. The findings suggest that ICT interventions that incorporate elements that help older adults maintain social contacts and develop new ones may lessen mental health/well-being issues and the burdens associated with them.

Book Social Network Characteristics and Intention to Participate in Social Activity Programs at a New Senior Center

Download or read book Social Network Characteristics and Intention to Participate in Social Activity Programs at a New Senior Center written by Sato Ashida and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Epidemiological studies have shown that socially integrated older adults live longer and healthier lives. Attempts have been made through organizations like senior centers to enhance social integration among older adults, but little is known about the impact of these efforts. This study investigated the characteristics of social networks among older adults living in community settings and whether these characteristics influence older adults' intentions to participate in new social activities. A total of 126 face-to-face structured interviews were conducted with older adults between the ages of 65 and 85 living in an urban community in Columbus, OH. Addresses were randomly selected from all possible addresses in the area. Recruitment letters were sent by mail, with follow-up phone calls made when phone numbers were available. About 63.5% of the respondents were female, and 89.7% were White. The influence of social network characteristics, social support, companionship, and participation in productive activities on older adults' intentions to participate in activities at a soon-to-open senior center was explored using hierarchical multiple linear regression. The results indicated a direct influence of social network characteristics on older adults' intentions to participate in new activities, and some of the influence was mediated by functional features of social networks such as perceived support and companionship. Respondents who had smaller numbers of people in their networks and those with smaller proportions of network members who provided support had lower intentions to participate in new social activities, and thus should be targeted for intervention. It was also found that the construct of companionship and supportive relationship have independent associations with network characteristics and older adults' intentions to participate in activities. Because the older adults who had lower perceived availability of companionship had higher levels of intention to participate, these individuals are likely to be recruited successfully and benefit by promoting companionship among them. Additional research is needed to investigate other possible mechanisms linking social networks and intentions to participate, such as social influence from network members.

Book What Matters for Health and Happiness Among the Older Adults in Asia

Download or read book What Matters for Health and Happiness Among the Older Adults in Asia written by Nai Peng Tey and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People want to live a healthy and happy later life. A large body of literature shows the close association between health status and happiness and between health and active engagement (in work, exercise, and social and religious activities). However, the causation between the two can run both ways, and it is difficult to determine the causal effect with cross-sectional data. Various authors have shown the significant influence of socioeconomic factors and human needs on older people’s health status and happiness. A better understanding of the factors affecting healthy and happy aging is essential for policymaking to improve the well-being of older people. The availability of data from HRS-family studies in several Asian countries (CHARLS in China, LASI in India, JSTAR in Japan, KLoSA in Korea, IFLS in Indonesia, HART in Thailand, MARS in Malaysia, and Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in Viet Nam) (see Gateway to Global Aging Data) provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to examine factors affecting health and happiness among older adults within and across Asian countries. This research topic aims to gather papers that investigate the socioeconomic, attitudinal, and behavioural factors affecting the health status and happiness/life satisfaction of older adults in Asia. The dependent variables may include physical health, mental health, disability (ADL/IADL), cognitive functioning), self-rated health, health expenditure, feeling of happiness and life satisfaction. The independent variables may be age, gender, marital status, place of residence, educational level, active engagement (work, exercise, social and religious activities), family and social relationship and support, outlook in life, smoking, drinking, and access to and utilization of healthcare services, etc. Manuscripts can be based on individual countries or cross-country analysis, preferably using the panel data to establish the causal effects of the independent variables on the dependent variables.

Book Reducing the Mortality Gap in People with Severe Mental Disorders the Role of Lifestyle Psychosocial Interventions

Download or read book Reducing the Mortality Gap in People with Severe Mental Disorders the Role of Lifestyle Psychosocial Interventions written by Andrea Fiorillo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients with severe mental disorders (SMD), including major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and related spectrum disorders, have a reduced life expectancy of 10-25 year compared with the general population. This life expectancy gap is mainly due to the co-occurrence of many physical diseases, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, hepatitis and HIV. Factors contributing to the reduced life expectancy can be grouped into three main categories: a) factors related to the patient; b) factors related to clinicians; and c) factors related to the health system. As regards the first group, patients with SMD often adopt unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, including heavy smoking, reduced physical activity, sedentary behaviors, poor diet and alcohol or drug abuse, and are reluctant to seek for physical care with GPs and other medical specialists. Increasing the levels of physical activity, improving the dietary patterns, and reducing the smoking habits of people with severe mental disorders represent a global health challenge and a public health priority. Until now, attempts made to reduce this mortality gap have acted at three different levels: health system level, physician level, and patient level. The third-level interventions include electronic alerts through smartphones and web-based platforms, intensive case management, promotion of healthy habits, complex psychosocial interventions. Several population-based studies have showed that lifestyle behaviors are amenable to change through the adoption of specific psychosocial interventions. However, most clinical guidelines, although emphasizing the importance of health monitoring and regular check-ups for patients with severe mental illnesses, do not make specific recommendations on the provision of lifestyle interventions. These lifestyle-oriented interventions, consisting of behavioral, educational, and psychological components, have been conducted mainly in research settings, and have shown a good impact on patients’ physical health. Despite this, their feasibility in routine settings has not been tested yet. It seems to be clinically and ethically relevant to develop, validate and carry out interventions to improve the lifestyle’s behaviors of patients with severe mental disorders, to reduce the presence of comorbidities and to improve their life expectancy. In this Research Topic we will summarize the available knowledge of the efficacy and effectiveness of psychosocial interventions aimed at improving healthy lifestyle behaviors and promoting the physical health of patients with severe mental disorders. Book Older Adults and Online Social Networking

Download or read book Older Adults and Online Social Networking written by Elise Hernandez and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social transition to older adulthood can be challenging for elderly individuals and their families when isolation poses a threat to well-being. Technology is currently providing younger generations with an opportunity to stay in contact with social partners through the use of online social networking tools; it is unclear whether older adults are also taking advantage of this communication method. This study explored how older adults are experiencing online social networking. Specifically, this research addressed how older adults' attitudes towards online social networking are related to their expertise in using computers and the internet for this purpose. A survey methodological approach was employed whereby older adults aged 65 and over were recruited from senior centers across the Central Florida area to fill out a series of questionnaires. The Computer Aversion, Attitudes, and Familiarity Index (CAAFI) was used to measure attitudes and expertise with computers. The Internet Technical Literacy and Social Awareness Scale was used to measure interest and expertise with the internet. The relationship between older adults' use of online social networking and their attitudes and expertise was also investigated. Finally, social connectedness, (measured using the Social Connectedness Scale) and subjective well-being (measured using the Satisfaction with Life Scale) were measured to explore whether older adults receive a psychosocial benefit from using online social networking. Findings showed expertise and attitudes scores were strongly correlated, and these scores were also predictive of online social networking use. The results of this study may help social service providers for elderly individuals begin to understand the many factors associated with using new forms of technology.
