Book Productivity and Innovation in SMEs

Download or read book Productivity and Innovation in SMEs written by Azad Bali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the determining factors behind productivity and innovation amongst Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore, and within the context of South East Asia, in order to offer recommendations for increasing productivity and aiding economic growth. SME firms are an influential driver of economic growth in advanced world economies like the USA, Germany, Japan and South Korea. Throughout the 2000s, Singapore experienced a decline in economic growth which was linked to decreasing productivity in its SMEs. The decline triggered a transformational policy by a Government intent on forging a ‘high skill–high productivity’ future. Given substantial evidence that low productivity growth occurred in sectors where immigrants dominated the workforce, the seeds of recovery focused on improving productivity and innovation amongst SMEs in those sectors. Hence, this book investigates the factors determining productivity amongst SMEs across the manufacturing sector. It utilises personal interviews with global experts and CEOs, combined with primary data collected from a major international Delphi survey, and interviews with 215 SME owners and managers in Singapore. This data helps us to better understand how these productivity-enhancing factors can be used to increase performance amongst SMEs. By investigating the nature and process of total factor productivity in Singapore’s SMEs, this book tells the policy story behind the revolution. To provide a comparative analysis, Singapore’s story is placed within a South East Asian context. The unfolding narrative contains important lessons for policy makers and industry globally, as they assess the strategic choices available to them for improving productivity and innovation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of innovation and productivity, as well as economic development officers, government policy advisors, SME business managers and sustainable businesses.

Book Government Policy and Critical Success Factors of Small Businesses in Singapore

Download or read book Government Policy and Critical Success Factors of Small Businesses in Singapore written by Harold Siow Song Teng and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main economic players responsible for Singapore’s economic success is its small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs. Their overall success has helped propel the country and its people forward. From economic policies to politics, Singapore is a planned and regulated economy. Singapore’s economic success story is actually the result of a form of capitalism carefully calibrated and controlled by the government. An important element or aspect of good critical success factors (CSFs) emerges from the role being played by the government. The existence of good government or public policies that are pro-business is vital for the success of firms. Despite the fact that government policies and CSFs are widely studied in areas around the world including in Singapore, there is no comprehensive prediction model available to test if firms have potential to be successful or are more prone to failures. Much research investigates the non-financial factors contributing to success versus failure of small firms, but empirical tests of the predictability of these factors are less common. This book, which is primarily quantitative/ positivist in nature will attempt to fill this gap.

Book Theory and Practice of Innovation

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Innovation written by Nan Wang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of innovation is one of the most critical resources for both organisational and societal wealth. It effectively offers solutions in the face of economic and social challenges. Furthermore, commercial entities may sustain their operations in the current market environment through innovative strategies. Through innovation, different entities can survive and thrive by creating value and gaining a competitive advantage. Current research on innovation management has mainly focused on developed market economies and relatively large firms. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) form a significant fraction of the players that contribute a great deal to economic growth as well as innovation. In addition, little research has been conducted to explore the internal and external drivers of innovation in SME operations, adopting an integrative and comprehensive approach that takes into account the dynamic global climate. This study seeks to contribute knowledge on innovation theory, practice and evidence from the Australian socioeconomic context to business and innovation management literature. The Australian economy is regarded as greatly diverse and is dominated by SMEs. The study contributes to filling the gap in strategy-focused research in the domain of SMEs. Through government support, the economy has achieved significant levels of industrialisation, modernisation, and steady economic growth. The present research problem is to identify the innovation enabling and deterring factors, and to explore strategic orientation and its influence on innovation and firm growth performance. In addition, this study seeks to offer insights on innovation development in Australia, to determine the impact of innovation practices on SME business growth performance and attain a greater understanding of SME innovation practices and capacities. The hypothetical conceptual model developed in this study was based on a systematic review of innovation management literature for the construction of an innovation-driven organisation that aims to empower its knowledge workers to innovate, thus unleashing organisational innovation and improving the governance and measurement of innovation. It also provides answers to recent calls to differentiate between components of a firm's strategic orientations. The study has also developed a behavioural model for strategic planning and investigating the desirability and feasibility for Australian SMEs to engage in innovative activity. It addresses the concern that more evidence is needed to understand the impact of innovation practices on innovation engagement in SMEs.The dataset used in this study comes from the Business Longitudinal Survey (BLS) for Australian SMEs over the financial years 2006/07 - 2010/11, which is the main statistical instrument of Australia. The BLS was developed for monitoring a wide range of business characteristics and behaviours, which it links to performance over time. The results suggest that: first, certain strategic orientations (future orientation, technology orientation, collaboration orientation, risk orientation, and innovativeness orientation) tend to have a significant influence on innovation practices; second, the perception of moderate barriers (financial, knowledge, and environmental) could be beneficial for stimulating innovation activities; and third, innovation practices tend to have a significant influence on business growth performance. Furthermore, a moderating effect of IS integration in the relationship between collaborative network and innovation performance is found. The results of this study present several interesting findings and provide significant contributions. It is highly probable that this is the first empirical study exploring SMEs' innovation practices in the Australian economy and the impact of these practices on business growth performance. The present study further enriches business and innovation management literature with both managerial and academic implications, because it offers empirical evidence of the relationship between innovation practices, strategic orientations, and business growth performance. It finally provides a practical model at the strategic level of the firm with dynamic capabilities that SMEs can use as guiding principles for formulating innovation strategies.

Book Industry 4 0 for SMEs

Download or read book Industry 4 0 for SMEs written by Dominik T. Matt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the concept of Industry 4.0, which presents a considerable challenge for the production and service sectors. While digitization initiatives are usually integrated into the central corporate strategy of larger companies, smaller firms often have problems putting Industry 4.0 paradigms into practice. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) possess neither the human nor financial resources to systematically investigate the potential and risks of introducing Industry 4.0. Addressing this obstacle, the international team of authors focuses on the development of smart manufacturing concepts, logistics solutions and managerial models specifically for SMEs. Aiming to provide methodological frameworks and pilot solutions for SMEs during their digital transformation, this innovative and timely book will be of great use to scholars researching technology management, digitization and small business, as well as practitioners within manufacturing companies.

Book Innovation in High Technology SMEs

Download or read book Innovation in High Technology SMEs written by Shobha S. Das and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have examined innovation by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), identified factors that contribute to innovation, and concluded that SMEs tend to be innovative and innovation improves performance. Do these findings hold for high-technology SMEs that are located in a newly industrialized economy? Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm, and literature from entrepreneurship and innovation studies, we develop and test hypotheses using quantitative data collected from a survey. While the results of the study generally support prior research conclusions, there is a surprising finding: top management experience negatively moderates the effect of innovation on performance. Qualitative data from follow-up interviews with CEOs of SMEs helped us understand this finding.

Book Barriers and Opportunities for Small and Medium sized Thai Food Firms in the Context of Innovation Management

Download or read book Barriers and Opportunities for Small and Medium sized Thai Food Firms in the Context of Innovation Management written by Natawat Saigosoom and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation deals with barriers and opportunities for small and medium sized Thai food firms in the context of innovation management, based on the case of processed marine and processed fruit and vegetable sectors, which are the main revenue contributors to the Thai food processing industry. Nature of firm innovation, barriers to innovations, main innovation activities, firm innovation performance, and the relationship between innovations and firm business performance of Thai food SMEs are all discussed in this study. The thesis aims to help SME entrepreneurs in the food industry to better foster innovations and also provides guidelines for policy makers to craft effective innovation policy for food SMEs. Additionally, it provides academic insight into the field of innovation management in the environment of Thai SMEs, where gaps in the literature exist. This research was achieved by the triangulation approach, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research techniques (i.e. document analysis, multiple-regression analysis, case studies) and was guided by a conceptual framework adapted from studies of innovation management, barriers to innovation, and innovation in the food industry. The literature review was first conducted, followed by pilot interviews in a semi-structured format with 10 Thai food firms, structured face-to-face interviews with 100 Thai food SMEs, and case studies with 4 Thai food SMEs. The findings of this research reveal that innovation can lead to improved firm business performance for Thai food SMEs, although this is a complex process, propelled by numerous factors, and overall innovation performance achieved by most survey firms was still low. During the innovation development phase, it appeared that most innovation activities in the survey food firms were driven informally on an in-house basis, and process-innovation activities were the main focus. Product innovations, however, were the main output in the phase of innovation deployment, followed by process and marketing innovations, while organisational innovations were the most overlooked area for most Thai food SMEs in this phase. However, it was process and marketing innovations that were the key determinants of overall firm growth in the surveyed food firms. Finally, investigations of the main barriers to developing innovations encountered by Thai food SMEs show that it was product innovation that was most seriously affected by a number of serious barriers to innovation. Resistance to change by customers, for instance, was one of the main obstacles impeding the product innovation efforts of sampled Thai food SMEs. Meanwhile, the development of process and marketing innovations was mainly hampered by the problems of weak employee skills and a lack of finance. A shortage of time on the part of decision makers was the most serious barrier to developing organisational innovations.
