Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Pentecostalism began as a culturally isolated sect intent upon announcing the imminence of the world's end. The sect's early millenarian fervor gradually became muted in favor of flag-waving patriotism. At the end of the twentieth century it has become an affluent, worldwide movement thoroughly entrenched in popular culture. Edith Blumhofer uses the Assemblies of God, the largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world, as a lens through which to view the changing nature of Anglo Pentecostalism in the United States. She illustrates how the original mission to proclaim the end resulted in the development of Bible schools, the rise of the charismatic movement, and the popularity of such figures as Aimee Semple McPherson, Charles Fox Parham, and David Du Plessis. Blumhofer also examines the sect's use of radio and television and the creation of a parallel Christian culture

Book excerpt: Many churches are switching to the multisite or multiservice models to manage crowded sanctuaries due to growing attendance. This solution seems sensible in the short term, but too often churches adopt this model without taking into consideration what the Bible says about it. Illuminating the importance of physical togetherness as a way to protect the gospel, this book argues that maintaining a single assembly best embodies the unity the church possesses in Jesus Christ. Jonathan Leeman considers a series of biblical, theological, and pastoral arguments that ask us to stop and examine intuitions or assumptions about what a church is. He reorients our minds to a biblical definition of church, offering examples of churches that have thrived with a single service at a single site and compelling alternatives for those looking to solve the complications that come with a growing church.

Book excerpt: Once the Pentecostal peace witness extended throughout the movement and around the world-but was eventually muted and almost completely lost in the American Assemblies of God. This book, which is "gripping, powerful, and prophetic," says Amos Yong, tells the story of that shift. "The antiwar, Christian, pacifist sentiments of the Assemblies of God that Alexander describes . . . juxtaposed in close proximity to their pro-war and anti-pacifist passion and identification with America . . . is simply striking," comments J. Denny Weaver, in the C. Henry Smith Series Editor's Foreword. The implications, observes Cheryl Bridges Johns, Professor of Christian Formation and Discipleship, Church of God, "are worth examining by all traditions asking, 'Will our children have faith?' At the same time, mentions Harvey Cox, Hollis Professor of Religion, Harvard Divinity School, Alexander's narrative "suggests that Pentecostals may yet reclaim this invaluable element of their heritage."

Book The Assemblies of God

  • Author : Margaret M. Poloma
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2010-11-23
  • ISBN : 0814767842

Download or read book The Assemblies of God written by Margaret M. Poloma and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Assemblies of God (AG) is the ninth largest American and the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination, with over 50 million followers worldwide. The AG embraces a worldview of miracles and mystery that makes“supernatural” experiences, such as speaking in tongues, healing, and prophecy, normal for Christian believers. Ever since it first organized in 1916, however, the “charismata” or “gifts of the Holy Spirit” have felt tension from institutional forces. Over the decades, vital charismatic experiences have been increasingly tamed by rituals, doctrine, and denominational structure. Yet the path towards institutionalization has not been clear-cut. New revivals and direct personal experience of God—the hallmarks of Pentecostalism—continue as an important part of the AG tradition, particularly in the growing number of ethnic congregations in the United States. The Assemblies of God draws on fresh, up-to-date research including quantitative surveys and interviews from twenty-two diverse Assemblies of God congregations to offer a new sociological portrait of the AG for the new millennium. The authors suggest that there is indeed a potential revitalization of the movement in the works within the context of the larger global Pentecostal upswing, and that this revitalization may be spurred by what the authors call “godly love:” the dynamic interaction between divine and human love that enlivens and expands benevolence. The volume provides a wealth of data about how the second-largest American Pentecostal denomination sees itself today, and suggests trends to illuminate where it is headed in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Roswell Flower was adrift in his late teens. When he surrendered himself to Jesus Christ at age nineteen, his heart found a home in the Pentecostal Movement. Soon his mind was exhilarated by studying the Bible, church history, and theology. Slowly, he began to realize he was called to full time ministry. Attracted by the announcement of a convention to encourage greater cooperation among Pentecostal groups, he went to what proved to be the founding meeting of the General Council of the Assemblies of God. Flower was elected as secretary of the new organization. He loved the Council's guiding principles of unity, voluntary cooperation, and fellowship, which at the same time protected the autonomy of local congregations. They guided his ministry for the next forty-six years as a local pastor, as a district superintendent, and as general secretary. Flower never wavered in his commitment to the classical Pentecostal doctrine of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. He spent much time in the last two decades of his public ministry teaching the principles and the denomination's position on Spirit-baptism to the new generations of Assemblies of God youth, both in the United States and abroad.

Book excerpt: "Based on extensive interviews with mostly former cult members, this book chronicles the history of the Church of God of Union Assembly from its beginning around World War I up to recent times. Founded by a charismatic, unlettered leader, C. T. Pratt, who forcefully broke away from the Holiness COG organization, the church eventually found its home base in Dalton, Georgia. It grew steadily at first and then more rapidly as the great Depression ravaged workers in the mostly rural area of north Georgia. The group set up communal living practices and spread branches of the church across the country, recruiting among the most displaced with a message of social uplift and anti-capitalism, even as its religious practices became increasingly authoritarian and exploitative. If C. T. Pratt exhibited some characteristics of a violent cult leader, his son, who took over the church as his father suffered from ill-health, took these tendencies to a new level that eventually caught the attention of secular authorities. His son, in turn, was even worse--and placed the church on the path to financial ruin. Amazingly, the church survived its three authoritarian leaders and still exists"--

In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Book Wing to Rise Blacks Leadership and the Assemblies of God

Download or read book Wing to Rise Blacks Leadership and the Assemblies of God written by Dr Darnell K Williams and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an Assemblies of God minister and pastor of a diverse congre-gation, a leader in a multicultural network that is 60 percent African American, an executive in the National Black Fellowship, which seeks to "recruit, develop and empower ministers and churches to fulfill God's mission in urban America," and an AG executive presbyter, I believe God has placed me in a unique position to help our movement cultivate a diverse leadership in order to reach a diverse America. As the world's largest Protestant movement, the Assemblies of God has a powerful opportunity to leverage its influence to create pathways for African American leaders. The Assemblies of God has already proven itself as a global force in world missions. It has successfully sent forth missionaries to establish church networks, found Bible schools, and provide humanitarian outreach through healthcare, nutrition, and digging wells. With its missional focus and equipped ministers, it now has a remarkable opportunity to make significant impact in urban America. This book has the potential to face the racial divide in the United States and to make a way forward to address the sin of institutional racism and individual prejudices that still plague the landscape of this nation. As people of color are empowered to positions of leadership in our Fellowship, they can lead the Church in overcoming racial division and pave the way for a radical spiritual renewal in the nation's urban centers, which remain plagued by poverty, violence, dysfunction, and hopelessness. This will require intentionality around the promotion of black individuals in roles of leadership at all levels of the Fellowship. This book is designed to cultivate such leadership, as it promotes the strides the AG has already made over the decades and further spurs the Fellowship to continue identifying, recruiting, promoting, appointing, electing, and making space for black leaders among its ranks. The Pew Research Center noted in a 2015 study that the Assemblies of God has become the most diverse Protestant movement in the country. Despite the healthy diversity within the constituency of the Assem-blies of God, a lack of diversity within leadership prevails. While the sixty-seven districts of the Fellowship may have African Americans serving at various levels of leadership, as of 2020, only two black individuals serve as duly elected district executives: Dr. Samuel Huddleston, who serves as assistant superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District, and myself. The General Presbytery comprises district-elected executives, pastoral representatives from each district, and representatives of ethnic or language fellowships. As of 2014, 88 (32 percent) of the 274 general presbyters are ethnic or language GPs. Minority GP representation comes predominately from either ethnic fellowship representation or language districts rather than through elected district leaders. Though the Fellowship remains racially diverse in terms of constitu-ents, the leaders at the district levels do not reflect this diversity. As a result, black leaders are underrepresented in the current electoral process within the Assemblies of God, and an opportunity exists to cultivate diversity within leadership roles. This will require working with or around the governance model of the Fellowship, which is primarily based upon elected leadership. Because of this model, minorities face a daunting task to occupy leadership positions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Westminster Assembly is celebrated for its doctrinal standards and debates on church polity. But how often is the assembly noted for its extraordinary intervention in the pulpit ministry of the Church of England? In God’s Ambassadors , Chad Van Dixhoorn recounts the Puritan quest for a reformation in preachers and preaching and how the Westminster Assembly fit into that movement. He examines the assembly’s reform efforts, tracing debates and exploring key documents about preaching in a way that both highlights disagreements within the assembly’s ranks and showcases their collective plan for the church going forward. Moreover, Van Dixhoorn reveals the rationale behind the assembly’s writings and reforms, both in terms of biblical exegesis and practical theology. Unlike any other book, God’s Ambassadors draws attention to the lengths to which the Westminster Assembly would go in promoting godly preachers and improved preaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Paul's term ekklesia formulate the Christian self-understanding? Young-Ho Park finds the answer in its strong civic connotation in the politico-cultural world of the Greek East under the Roman Empire. By addressing his local Gentile congregation as ekklesia in his letters, Paul effectively created a symbolic universe in which the Christ-worshippers saw themselves as the honorable citizens who represented the city before God.
