Book TeamLab

Download or read book TeamLab written by Karin G. Oen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digital collective teamLab, founded in Tokyo in 2001 by Toshiyuki Inoko, breaks established boundaries between the gallery and art world. This group--comprised of more than four hundred people including programmers, designers, and animators--creates immersive digital experiences outside of the realm of the traditional art world, navigating the confluence of art, technology, design, and the natural world. In many cases, it roots its imagery in historical Japanese art but uses the visual language of high-tech rendering and animation. Over the past few years, teamLab's projects have kept pace with technology and have evolved from two-dimensional screen-based animations to room-sized interactive installations. This book is a collection of essays, interviews and photographs exploring both the presence of teamLab's installations and the ideas and processes behind them. With a focus on the development of their work rather than the actual public displays, this book takes readers behind-the-scenes of a fascinating and thoroughly modern take on art. See the teamLab exhibit--the inaugural display in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco's new 9,500-square-foot exhibition pavilion: April 24 - September 7, 2020.

Book excerpt: As a 50th anniversary gift to the museum, the Society for Asian Art has commissioned a major work by Liu Jianhua, one of China's best-known contemporary installation artists. The work comprises approximately 2,500 pieces of white porcelain formed into letters of the English alphabet and components of Chinese characters, suspended from the ceiling of the second-floor loggia. The artist provides only the building blocks of words, leaving it to viewers to create meaning. The artwork's location is especially apropos: the space offers an opportunity for dialogue with the original engraved literary quotations on the loggia's walls, dating to the building's previous incarnation as San Francisco's Main Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carlos Villa has been described as the preeminent Filipino American artist--a legend in artistic circles for his groundbreaking approaches and his influence on countless artists--but he remains little known to many fans and scholars of modern and contemporary art. Carlos Villa: Worlds in Collision is the first museum retrospective of his work, presented at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Villa was trained at the San Francisco Art Institute in the 1950s as an abstract expressionist, and over time he transformed his practice to address issues of ethnic and cultural diversity. He concurrently assumed a leadership role in 'Third World' and 'multicultural' international art movements, and his large-scale works reference non-Western traditions, including tattoo, scarification, ritual, and ceremony. He was also an important theorist, curator, and organizer of public forums that he called 'actions.' This book traces the arc of his career from 1969 until his death in 2013, with emphasis on his feathered works from the 1970s, as well as later works that address aspects of the history of Filipinos in the United States. It illuminates the social and cultural roots--and global importance--of Villa's art and teaching career as he sought to forge a new kind of art-world inclusion that reflected his own experience, commitment to diversity, and boundary-bending imagination"--
