Download or read book The Ashanti War 1874 Volume 1 written by Captain Henry Brackenbury and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Brackenbury was a brilliant staff officer - one of the “Garnet Ring” that surrounded the famous General Sir Garnet Wolsey. This is a very serious and detailed two-volume account of the brief but bloody Ashanti campaign - containing a lot of background and logistics. The Ashanti War came about after the armies of the ambitious Ashanti Empire moved south, attacking coastal tribes in the Gold Coast under British protection. After naval forces had failed to deter them, a military expedition was mounted under Wolseley, including soldiers from the Rifle Brigade, the Black Watch and the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Garnet moved against the Ashanti early in 1874, twice defeated them, and occupied their capital Kumasi. In the wake of the defeat, other small tribes asserted their independence and eventually Britain, after restoring oirder, was compelled to add the Gold Coast to the dominions fo the British Empire. Losses in the war were an estimated 1,000 British and 2,000 Ashantis.

Book excerpt: This is a key text for understanding the history of the great West African kingdom of Asante (now in Ghana). It is perhaps the earliest example of history writing in English by an African ruler. The result is an indispensably detailed account of the Asante monarchy from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. Context is provided by the inclusion of other writings by or about Agyeman Prempeh, together with four introductory essays by the world's leading scholars of Asante history.

Book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare written by Byron Farwell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Byron Farwell served as an engineer in the British forces of World War II and was an author of at least seven books on various aspects of military history. In this encyclopedia, a labor of love intended for both scholars and general readers, entries include information on wars, revolutions, battles, sieges, spies, soldiers, technical military terms, weapons, and other aspects of 19th-centruy wars and military life. The length of an entry does not necessarily correspond to its importance. Some lesser conflicts and minor personalities are given more space, because information is not readily available elsewhere; and conversely, if information on a topic is widely available, the entry is short. Small bandw images enhance the text. A selected bibliography is included at the end of the volume. Indexing, at least by country or general topic would have improved this otherwise carefully prepared reference. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR
