Book Learning and Awareness

Download or read book Learning and Awareness written by Ference Marton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from more than 25 years of systematic research into the experience of learning undertaken by a research team trying to account for the obvious differences between more or less successful instances of learning in educational institutions. The book offers an answer in terms of the discovery of critical differences in the structure of the learner's awareness and critical differences in the meaning of the learner's world. The authors offer a detailed account of the empirical findings that give rise to theoretical insights, and discuss the particular form of qualitative research that has been employed and developed. The form of learning that is the object of study is considered to be the most fundamental form -- namely a change in the learner's way of seeing, experiencing, handling, and understanding aspects of the world. The need for rigorous analysis of learning of specific subject matter, the individual construction of knowledge, and its social and cultural embeddedness -- the defining features of rival approaches into research on learning -- are reconciled from the approach adopted here into an intertwined and whole experience of learning. The learner's experience is always one of learning something, in some way, and in some context; by holding the learner's experience of learning as the focus of study throughout -- and not studying the learning of the content and the acts and the context as separate and distinct focuses -- the content, the act, and the context remain united as constituents of the learner's experience. By empirically revealing critical differences in the ways of experiencing these aspects of learning, and by developing a theoretical framework for the dynamics through which change comes about in the learner's awareness, this book gradually leads the reader to a powerful new view of learning. Equipped with the analytical tools and conceptual apparatus to be found in this book, the reader will be empowered to learn and to assist others to learn by creating environments conducive to the most fundamental form of learning: experiencing aspects of the world in new ways.

Book excerpt: The author of The Seven Storey Mountain explores the mysticism of Saint John of the Cross. The only thing that can save the world from complete moral collapse is a spiritual revolution. . . . The desire for unworldliness, detachment, and union with God is the most fundamental expression of this revolutionary spirit. In Ascent to Truth, author and Trappist Monk Thomas Merton makes an impassioned case for the importance of contemplation. Drawing on a range of thinkers—from Carl Jung to Pope Pius XII—Merton defines the nature of contemplative experience and shows how the Christian mysticism of sixteenth-century Spanish Carmelite Saint John of the Cross offers essential answers to our disquieting and troubling times. “For any who have the desire to look into meditation and contemplation . . . this is the book for which they have waited.” —New York Herald Tribune Book Review “For those who may be curious about mysticism, and for those who may be called to a life of contemplation, this is an excellent book.” —Catholic World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Svetasvataropanisad is considered to be the most beautiful of all the Upanisads, the philosophical texts of the Hindu religion. In this new translation, Devadatta Kali takes a fresh look, and works from a new premise that the Svetasvatara represents a Saivite (one of the Hindu sects) point of view. This he claims, allows its intended meaning to shine forth. The translation and commentary brings to life the seer Svetasvatara, who from time to time delights in provocation and word play, allowing the reader to share the joy of his liberated vision that all this world is an expression of the Divine. This translation aims to capture the seer's ecstatic response to the wonders of creation while pointing the reader towards the even greater wonder of its source. Devadata Kali's purpose in his translation and the commentary is to convey the vibrant immediacy of the Sanskrit original and strip away many centuries of exegetical accretions in order to make Svetasvatara's message heard as he intended--as a statement of profound insight designed to guide, inspire, and enlighten. Features of the text: 13 pages of uninterrupted fl ow of the translation of the Upanisad.6 chapters of the Upanisad in original Sanskrit with English translation and commentary. Two appendixes giving the word-by-word analysis of the Sanskrit and a complete tabulation of the correspondences with other texts and internal corresponds within the Upanisad itself.Index including bilingual references and major themes by verse.

Book The Ascent of Man

  • Author : James F. Harris
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-29
  • ISBN : 1351305581
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The Ascent of Man written by James F. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ascent of Man develops a comprehensive theory of human nature. James F. Harris sees human nature as an emergent property that supervenes a cluster of properties. Despite significant overlap between individuals that have human nature and those that are biologically human, the concept of human nature developed in this book is different. Whether biologically human or not, an individual may be said to possess human nature. This theory of human nature is called the"cluster theory." Harris takes as his point of departurePlato's comment that in learning what a thing is we should look to the ways in which it acts upon or is acted upon by other things. He commits to a methodological naturalism and draws upon current views from the social and biological sciences. The cluster theory he develops represents one of the very few completely novel theories of human nature developed in the post-Darwin era. It will prove most useful in dealing with philosophical questions involving such contemporary issues as cloning, cybernetics, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The fundamental conceptual issue is how plastic and elastic is the nature of human nature. Just how different might we imagine human beings to be and still be human in the sense that they still possess whatever it is that accounts for a unique nature? The theory of human nature developed in this book is a descriptive, dynamic, bottom-up, non-essentialist, naturalist theory. Harris is well versed in classical philosophy and contemporary behavioral science. He writes in a graceful, open-ended way that both educates and illuminates renewed interest in what it means to be human.

Book Above the Fray

Download or read book Above the Fray written by Owen Thomas Ashton, MD and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is an ever changing and often unpredictable sequence of events that rarely fulfills our expectations or desires. And yet in the long run, if we can be objective in our assessment, we find that unpredictable and challenging events invariably contribute to our growth and maturity. Could it be that adversity is a message and a gift from Infinite Wisdom? Is it possible to perceive perfection in all things simply by changing our point of view? Is there some body of secret knowledge that when applied can allow us to find meaning and clarity in all events? Yes, yes, and triple yes. By increasing our level of awareness, we can render all concerns, obstacles, misfortunes, and mistakes as utterly irrelevant. This is a powerful statement that may take some radical examination of our present approach to life on planet earth, but perhaps up until the present moment, we have missed something that in retrospect would seem very obvious. It would be very beneficial if we could accept as perfect even the harshest of lifes difficulties. Oh, looking back over the past ten years of ones life experience, one might finally admit that the lesson learned was necessary and even desired; however it required too many years of suffering to finally reach such a conclusion. Increasing ones level of awareness, and applying concepts that have been taught throughout the ages, coupled with a sprinkling of new scientific breakthroughs, potentially could lessen or even eliminate this suffering. The illusions of insanity that seemingly permeate our lives will become important tools in the ascent of our journey into Awareness.

Book The Ascent of Humanity

  • Author : Charles Eisenstein
  • Publisher : North Atlantic Books

  • ISBN : 1583945377
  • Pages : 577 pages

Download or read book The Ascent of Humanity written by Charles Eisenstein and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible explores the history and potential future of civilization, tracing the converging crises of our age to the illusion of the separate self Our disconnection from one another and the natural world has mislaid the foundations of science, religion, money, technology, economics, medicine, and education as we know them. It has fired our near-pathological pursuit of technological Utopias even as we push ourselves and our planet to the brink of collapse. Fortunately, an Age of Reunion is emerging out of the birth pangs of an earth in crisis. Our journey of separation hasn't been a terrible mistake but an evolutionary process and an adventure in self-discovery. Even in our darkest hour, Eisenstein sees the possibility of a more beautiful world—not through the extension of millennia-old methods of management and control but by fundamentally reimagining ourselves and our systems. We must shift away from our Babelian efforts to build ever-higher towers to heaven and instead turn out attention to creating a new kind of civilization—one designed for beauty rather than height.

Book Ascent of the Mountain Flight of the Dove

Download or read book Ascent of the Mountain Flight of the Dove written by Michael Novak and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essence of Ascent of the Mountain, Flight of the Dove remains intact: its vision of religious studies as sustained refl ection on our lifelong voyage to discover who we are. The story we choose for ourselves, the story we live, can sacralize or secularize our lives and our world by the way in which we choose to relate to it. With this awareness of the story dimension of life, Ascent of the Mountain, Flight of the Dove opens us to awe, reverence, and wonder at the risks and possibilities of human freedom. This book is even more important than it was thirty years ago. We need religion to strike deeply into the self, away from public glare. Unless Americans become more sophisticated about the language of the self, inner life will shrivel. In addition, our people will continue to be vulnerable to fundamentalist movements. Such movements take over too many innocents. Th ey promise, and sometimes deliver, a touching happiness. But they do so by closing the spirit in a powerful and dangerous way. Families and schools do not provide a large and critical vocabulary by which to express the inner longings of the spirit. The souls of many are parched and they gladly accept water, any water, from those who off er it. Th e liberation of the religious spirit from trivial, closed, and simplistic systems of thought can only be achieved through the development of a critical language, exercises, and disciplines that open rather than close the mind, that lead to higher viewpoints, breakthroughs, and new syntheses, in a constant enlargement of spirit. Novak's book leads us to that place.

Book The Caldron of Consciousness

Download or read book The Caldron of Consciousness written by Ralph D. Ellis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These new studies by prominent neuroscientists, psychologists and philosophers work toward a coherent framework for understanding emotion and its contribution to the functioning of consciousness in general, as an aspect of self-organizing, embodied subjects. Distinguishing consciousness from unconscious information processing hinges on the role of motivating emotions in all conscious modalities, and how emotional brain processes interact with those traditionally associated with cognitive function. Computationally registering/processing sensory signals (e.g. in the occipital lobe or area V4) by itself does not result in perceptual consciousness, which requires subcortical structures such as amygdala, hypothalamus, and brain stem. This interdisciplinary anthology attempts to understand the complexity of emotional intentionality; why the role of motivation in self-organizing processes is crucial in distinguishing conscious from unconscious processes; how emotions account for 'agency'; and how an adequate approach to emotion-motivation can address the traditional mind-body problem through a holistic understanding of the conscious, behaving organism. Book The Metaphysics of Becoming

Download or read book The Metaphysics of Becoming written by Thomas Padiyath and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study attempts to elucidate a possible meeting point of the traditions of Eastern and Western metaphysical thinking. In discussing Whitehead’s and Aurobindo’s views on being and becoming, it seeks the possibility of a better engagement between the East and the West in the light of the philosophical insights. It is an initiation into the Sitz im Leben of Whitehead’s philosophy and his general thought pattern. It carries a perceptive analysis to show the clear primacy of Becoming or Process in Whitehead that extends even to the Divine. It also highlights Aurobindo as a unique Indian Philosopher, who articulated Indian thought in Western categories. He was able to integrate the evolutionary theory of the West with the Indian understanding of becoming. The relationship between God and Creativity and Sachchidananda and the Supermind is studied within the context of Enlightenment and Modernity and the way of doing philosophy in the West and in the East.

This book is written for individuals interested in transformational transcendent spiritual development, insight and understanding. Part II of this book also includes 64 Tao of Onliness I Ching commentaries, one for each of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. These are intended for use by individuals for Tao of Onliness I Ching consultation. Following are excerpts from this book that characterize its content and perspective: "From Onliness perspective, I Ching consultation is an early-stage form of quiet and solitary meditation-contemplation. Enacted in this way, it can be a means of viewing and better understanding your own intuitive Awareness and Experience. There is nothing ́magical ́ about it; it is not a ́fortune-teller ́ game (i.e., I Ching can not tell you what will happen in the future, but sometimes suggests what potentially, under certain circumstances, could or may happen at some future time). Approached in a peaceful, non-attached, unbiased and open state of mind, I Ching consultation can help you to see into the deeper nature of your own Consciousness." "Tao of Onliness conception is primarily rooted in Mahayana Buddhism (especially Zen Buddhism) and Taoism, with substantial contribution to its formulation and structure based on consultation of the I Ching. However, Onliness also attempts to honor and include expressions of the mystical and transcendental Wisdom and Compassion from all of the widely recognized major spiritual-religious traditions of the world." "Onliness Consciousness concerns the Self of no-self, this Being that is all beings. . . There is here no claim that Onliness theory and perspective is in any sense absolute, ultimate, eternal or universal in any pre-given sense. The co-constructed worldspace realm-waves of consciousness discussed in Onliness are developmental and evolutionary in nature, not pre-created, pre-given, pre-designed or pre-ordained. Rather, Onliness claims that the co-created and co-enacted unfolding of these realm-waves of Spirit ́s transcendent Self-remembering Consciousness emerge and evolve over vast periods of time, gradually establishing themselves as patterned realm-wave stages (worldspaces of consciousness); pathways or "trails" so to speak." "In Onliness, the underlying central message is the same one that was expressed 2,500 years ago by Shakyamuni Buddha upon his Realization of Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree: ́Marvelous! Marvelous! All beings are already fully enlightened! It is only because of their delusion that they don ́t realize this. ́ (Mitchell, 1991). It is a message that is essentially the same as has been variously expressed by many other Sages from different mystical spiritual traditions up to the present day. It is the message of Self-as

Book Life and Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jürgen Lawrenz
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2012-12-05
  • ISBN : 1443843970
  • Pages : 420 pages

Download or read book Life and Mind written by Jürgen Lawrenz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bold, provocative account, the author argues that the phenomena of life and mind elude purely materialistic explanations. Living matter occupies a unique phase of existence which results from the complex transformation of its biochemical synergies. Analogous phase changes account for mind and self-reflexive consciousness. A central role in the living state is played by intelligence, which has not been recognised as a non-negotiable precondition of organic existence. Yet the concept of evolutionary adaptivity relies tacitly on it. Thus the book amounts to a serious challenge to the overly theoretical paradigmata of the last half-century with their timorous evasion of biological fundamentals. However, although the work relies on up-to-date research of the life sciences, it is a primarily philosophical enquiry, dealing head on with many unsolved problems of life and mind, and culminating in a detailed “ontological proof” of the mind system.
