Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do You Believe a Poem Can Inspire You for the Whole Day? The Ascension Circus has come to town! These poems are inspired by simple circus themes, and as with the traditional circus of days past, are meant for ladies and gentleman and children of all ages. Section 1 introduces us to mythical Longboard Beach and some of the characters who live there. In section 2, while they wait for the circus to open, there is a talent show happening at the cantina. In section 3, we go to the newly created playground, Joy Playground where the child within experiences many emotions. In sections 4 and 5, journey through The Ascension Circus midway and visit exotic tents, meet curious people, and circus animals. Buy a ticket to explore a secret cave or for an airplane ride from the past with wing walkers. Life is a three-ring circus in section 6. The big top show entertains us with many different acts, some traditional and some never experienced before. After the fat lady sings, the big top closes and night dreams begin. Not to worry, in section 7, there is a delightful parade out of town. After waving goodbye to our new friends, we settle back into Longboard Beach with new, expansive perspectives. Our hearts are open to new possibilities. Thank you for visiting the circus!

Book excerpt: Using the life and career of her father, writer Margaret Talbot tells the story of the rise of popular culture through a personal lens. The arc of Lyle Talbot's career is in fact the story of American entertainment. Born in 1902, Lyle left small-town Nebraska in 1918 to join a traveling carnival. From there he became a magician's assistant, an actor in a traveling theater troupe, a romantic lead in early talkies, then an actor in major Warner Bros. pictures, then an actor in cult B movies, and finally a part of the advent of television, with regular roles on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Leave It to Beaver. In her impeccably researched narrative--a combination of Hollywood history, social history, and family memoir--Margaret Talbot conjures warmth and nostalgia for those earlier eras of '10s and '20s small-town America, '30s and '40s Hollywood.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has not been the purpose of this book to novelize Wild Bill Hickok. That has already been done, and rather effectively. The main purpose of this work is to find out what was real, and what imaginary, in the stories about him. Wild Bill was a fascinating personality to all who knew him. The mere mention of his name never failed to bring a crash of brasses from the orchestra. His friends never ceased to chant his praises as an honest man, an incredibly accurate pistol shot, and an individual who was without fear in the presence of danger. Book excerpt: THE ASCENSION BEGINS. A Catholic bishop. A Quaker prayer leader. A Methodist minister. A Mormon ward leader. An entire congregation of Seventh Day Adventists. What do they have in common? They all minister to people's spiritual needs. And someone-or something-is ripping them to shreds for it. A BLOODY WARNING. Police detective Caldwell "Cal" Evans, still three weeks shy of completing rehab, is called in on the case. His only clue is a chilling message written in blood at the first murder scene: "Leave the Christ alone. He does not belong to you." THE SERPENT SHALL REIGN. With bodies piling up, Cal and his partner, Velvet Rabinowitz, chase leads involving snake-handling cults, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and an ancient ceremony left unfinished for two thousand years. With the help of a graduate student and an enigmatic Roman Catholic priest, the two detectives do more than fight for their lives. .THEY FIGHT FOR US ALL.

Download or read book Kenyas 2013 General Election written by Kimani Njogu and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When voters enthusiastically turn up to cast their vote during general elections, they expect that their action would meaningfully change their lives. But in most of Africa, even when elections are held on a regular basis, voters are quite often disappointed by the performance of their leaders who use the new positions as an opportunity to loot public resources and consolidate power. It is almost as if elections are of minimal value to the populace. Notwithstanding this trend, when they are free and fair, general elections can be transformative. They can bring into the political arena men and women of integrity committed to service and account-ability. Inspired by the determination to have inclusive governance and the advancement of democracy, Kenyas 2013 General Election: Stakes, Practices and Outcomes asks important questions related to political participation, coalition building, politics of identity, the international criminal court, electoral systems and institutions, and the judiciary. The papers are written by mainly Kenyan academics and civil society actors who examine the drivers of the 20?3 general elections and the sources of the mandate to lead. This book is part of publications by Twaweza Communications on democratic practice and accountable governance in Kenya.
