The Aryan problem is attacked chiefly with a revolutionary reassessment of the date of Rigveda on the basis of fresh linguistic evidence assisted by the Archaeological evidence. The date of Rigveda has been proved to be beyond 5000 BC. The revised date of Rigveda solves several other problems; for example the Indus civilization naturally comes late than the Vedic civilization. Since fresh Archaeological evidence proves Indus civilization to be Aryan; but according to the revised date of Rigveda, the Indus civilization indicates the Puranic stage or a later stage. The original home of Indo-European has also been reconsidered and it has been shown that it was possible for the Aryans to go to other parts of Indo-European area from India. The evidence of the migration of the Gypsies gives a clue to the change of Proto Indo-European a to a, e, o in several Indo-European languages and to migrations from India in ancient days. A probable common origin of Indo-European and Dravidian has also been attempted. The work presents evidence of horse for Aryan migration from India to outside. Besides evidence of cotton, iron etc. have also been utilized for fixation of the date of Rigveda. Thus the work presents sufficient evidence for a reconsideration of several vital problems of Aryan migration.

The analysis of these problems has led to the formation of the African theory of the Aryan ethnic group origin. This hypothesis is the cornerstone of this monograph, covering all of its chapters. As the material testifies, primary signs of the phonetic formation of the Indo-European protolanguage have their origin in the Bantu languages and other languages of Africa. They explain the «law of open syllables» in Slavic languages. In general, the linguistic analysis indicates the migration routes of the Aryans, who departed from the African continent in about VII century B. C. and headed off in the direction of Asia Minor and the Mediterranean coast. At that time the Aryan community split into two groups – the Western, which went from Asia Minor to the Balkans, forming Hittite, Armenian, Greek, Albanian languages, and Eastern group, which travelled through the Caucasus from the East and met with Finno-Ugric tribes. Subsequently, the Aryan group was divided into two subgroups: the Eastern, which went to China to form the region of Ordos (Tocharian language), and the Western, which occupied the Northern Black Sea steppe of Ukraine to the Carpathians. In III Millennium B. C. there has been a breakdown of this Aryan ethnic group, which gave birth to Slavs, Balts, Germans, Celts, Illyrians and Thracians who migrated into Central and Northern Europe. Earlier Indo-Iranians moved through the coastal lands to the North of India. On the whole, this study demonstrates convergent development of peoples, according to which the Aryans initially consisted a heterogeneous ethno-lingual totality which, on the basis of territorial proximity and Gentile, formed into a relatively unified ethnic group and «higher» language (Koine) which evolved into Indo-European languages.

Book excerpt: This monograph aims to close the gap in our knowledge of the nature and pace of grammatical change during the formative period of today’s Indo-Aryan languages. During the 6th-12th c. the gradual erosion of the synthetic morphology of Old Indo-Aryan resulted ultimately in the remodelling of its syntax in the direction of the New Indo-Aryan analytic type. This study concentrates on the emergence and development of the ergative construction in terms of the passive-to-ergative reanalysis and the co-existence of the ergative construction with the old and new analytic passive constructions. Special attention is paid to the actuation problem seen as the tug of war between conservative and eliminative forces during their development. Other chapters deal with the evolution of grammatical and lexical aspect, causativization, modality, absolute constructions and subordination. This study is based on a wealth of new data gleaned from original poetic works in Apabhraṃśa (by Svayaṃbhādeva, Puṣpadanta, Haribhadra, Somaprabha et al.). It contains sections dealing with descriptive techniques of Medieval Indian grammarians (esp. Hemacandra). All the Sanskrit, Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa examples are consistently parsed and translated. The opus is cast in the theoretical framework of Functional Grammar of the Prague and Amsterdam Schools. It should be of particular interest to scholars and students of Indo-Aryan and general historical linguistics, especially those interested in the issues of morphosyntactic change and typology in their sociohistorical setting.

The more familiar is the religion brought to South Asia in the second millennium BCE by speakers of Aryan or Indo-Iranian languages, a branch of the Indo-European language family. Another, more enigmatic, root is the Indus civilization of the third millennium BCE, which left behind exquisitely carved seals and thousands of short inscriptions in a long-forgotten pictographic script. Discovered in the valley of the Indus River in the early 1920s, the Indus civilization had a population estimated at one million people, in more than 1000 settlements, several of which were cities of some 50,000 inhabitants. With an area of nearly a million square kilometers, the Indus civilization was more extensive than the contemporaneous urban cultures of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Yet, after almost a century of excavation and research the Indus civilization remains little understood. How might we decipher the Indus inscriptions? What language did the Indus people speak? What deities did they worship? Asko Parpola has spent fifty years researching the roots of Hinduism to answer these fundamental questions, which have been debated with increasing animosity since the rise of Hindu nationalist politics in the 1980s. The language is spoken by about 10,000 people in the Chitral district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. This is the first extensive description of the formerly little-documented Palula language, and is one of only a few in-depth studies available for languages in the extremely multilingual Hindukush-Karakoram region. The grammar is based on original fieldwork data, collected over the course of about ten years, commencing in 1998. It is primarily in the form of recorded, mainly narrative, texts, but supplemented by targeted elicitation as well as notes of observed language use. All fieldwork was conducted in close collaboration with the Palula-speaking community, and a number of native speakers took active part in the process of data gathering, annotation and data management. The main areas covered are phonology, morphology and syntax, illustrated with a large number of example items and utterances, but also a few selected lexical topics of some prominence have received a more detailed treatment as part of the morphosyntactic structure. Suggestions for further research that should be undertaken are given throughout the grammar. The approach is theory-informed rather than theory-driven, but an underlying functional-typological framework is assumed. Diachronic development is taken into account, particularly in the area of morphology, and comparisons with other languages and references to areal phenomena are included insofar as they are motivated and available. The description also provides a brief introduction to the speaker community and their immediate environment.
