Book The Art of Mata Ortiz in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book The Art of Mata Ortiz in the Twenty first Century written by Susan L. Pinkerton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the work of select second generation Mata Ortiz artists to determine if there are differences from the first generation, and if so, what factors have promoted stylistic and technical innovations among second generation Mata Ortiz artists. Stylistic innovation studied included the use of new forms and designs; technical innovation included the use of new techniques and materials. In looking at factors related to the innovation in the work of second generation Mata Ortiz artists, the three theoretical areas of cultural drift, patronage, and motivation were considered. The research questions that drove this study are: How is the work of the second generation artists of Mata Ortiz different from the first generation artists in terms of form and design?; What intrinsic factors motivate second generation artists of Mata Ortiz to create new and innovative designs?; And lastly, what extrinsic factors motivate second generation artists of Mata Ortiz to create a new and innovative designs? Background information is given on the history of Mata Ortiz art. Information on Casas Grandes, Paquimé, and Juan Quezada provides context for the stylistic analysis of first and second generation Mata Ortiz art which is presented in chapter three. Over the last fifty years, Mata Ortiz ceramic art has developed from making replicas of Casas Grandes pottery to the numerous individual styles and creativity we see today. The stylistic innovations of Laura Bugarini and Héctor Gallegos, Jr. are highlighted. New techniques being used by Eli Navarrete Ortiz and Diego Valles, and new materials such as bronze being used by Martin Cota, are also covered. Within the pieces presented, differences can be identified, but it is difficult to make generalities because stylistic and technical innovation spans both generations, so the lines are sometimes blurred. Insight into some of the possible reasons for the stylistic innovation and artistic development that is seen in the art of Mata Ortiz is presented. This includes autonomous change and the role of patrons, collectors, and traders. Identifiable intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may have an impact on motivating the artists to create new and innovative designs and techniques are also summarized.

  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Portraits of Clay written by Sandra S. Smith and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, pottery was a lost art in Chihuahua, Mexico. But in the 1970s, near the ruins of Casas Grandes, an art revolution was born. Inspired by ancient pottery fragments from a tradition that had disappeared before the arrival of the first Europeans, a self-taught woodcutter-turned-artist reinvented an entire ceramic technology. Today Casas Grandes pottery, made by hand from local clays and mineral colors by a handful of artists, claims high prices and sets the standard for contemporary pottery. Photographer Sandra Smith traveled to Mata Ort’z to photograph the potters and to record their reflections on their work. Her portraits document their techniquesÑcollecting and preparing the clay, forming by hand, sanding, and painting. They also capture intimate moments between artists and their art. For anyone who has ever admired Casas Grandes pottery, Portraits of Clay is a beautiful introduction to the potters and their work.

Book Crafting Gender

  • Author : Eli Bartra
  • Publisher : Duke University Press

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Crafting Gender written by Eli Bartra and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume initiates a gender-based framework for analyzing the folk art of Latin America and the Caribbean. Defined here broadly as the "art of the people" and as having a primarily decorative, rather than utilitarian, purpose, folk art is not solely the province of women, but folk art by women in Latin America has received little sustained attention. Crafting Gender begins to redress this gap in scholarship. From a feminist perspective, the contributors examine not only twentieth-century and contemporary art by women, but also its production, distribution, and consumption. Exploring the roles of women as artists and consumers in specific cultural contexts, they look at a range of artistic forms across Latin America, including Panamanian molas (blouses), Andean weavings, Mexican ceramics, and Mayan hipiles (dresses). Art historians, anthropologists, and sociologists from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States discuss artwork from Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Suriname, and Puerto Rico, and many of their essays focus on indigenous artists. They highlight the complex webs of social relations from which folk art emerges. For instance, while several pieces describe the similar creative and technical processes of indigenous pottery-making communities of the Amazon and of mestiza potters in Mexico and Colombia, they also reveal the widely varying functions of the ceramics and meanings of the iconography. Integrating the social, historical, political, geographical, and economic factors that shape folk art in Latin America and the Caribbean, Crafting Gender sheds much-needed light on a rich body of art and the women who create it. Download or read book Low firing and Burnishing written by Sumi von Dassow and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers techniques of firing and finishing at low temperature without using glazes. Many ancient cultures and contemporary potters use methods of low firing, adding slips and burnishing pieces to create a more natural finish. The advantages are that it can be done without a kiln using old dustbins, pits dug out of the earth, or bonfires, meaning that providing you have outdoor space, it can be done on a low budget. This book is a step-by-step practical approach and beginner's guide, which focuses on how to do low firing and natural finishes, with many illustrations of beautiful work by contemporary makers. Chapters include burnishing, terra sigillata, smoke-firing, pit-firing, saggar firing and raku techniques.

Book Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer s Guide

Download or read book Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer s Guide written by Philip Stover and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil has written one of the first guides to buying and collecting Mata Ortiz pottery. This little book will provide the beginning and veteran collector with valuable information about the village of Mata Ortiz and its pottery. He will not tell you who or what to buy, but will guide you through the process, no matter your preference. We understand that preference is personal. We will not try and steer you to anyone or any one style of pottery. What we will do is explain a little history of the village, the pottery phenomenon, how the pottery is made, and what questions to ask if you want to buy. We will add a few details about getting here to the village and what to expect when you come. This book is written from a village perspective. The author lives full-time in the village and knows the potters and the pottery. He sponsors the village baseball team and serves on the village water commission! He and his wife have dug clay and manganese and have seen the process from start to finish. They know enough to leave the pottery making to those with the amazing talent to turn the bounty of the earth into the beauty of your home. The author brings a strong historical sense to the collector. The purpose of the book is not to speak for the potter. They are fully capable of doing that for themselves. Phil simply knows first-hand the experience of coming to the village for the first time and has over a decade of experience of many trips, ultimately building a home for his family along the beauty of the Palanganas River. Phil will not sell you a pot, nor lead you to the pot or potter "you should buy!" There will be few names mentioned in this book. The style, potter, and price are up to you. This is your basic guide to the world of Mata Ortiz. In a few pages, we hope to help you become a devotee of the village and its wonderful people. Bien venido a Mata Ortiz! Mata Ortiz Pottery Buyer's Guide is available as a Kindle eBook and as a paperback. In the eBook version the photos are in full color; the paperback photos are black and white. Download or read book Luxury Arts of the Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.

Book excerpt: It was a miracle worthy of the season. When Captain Leonard La Rue spied from his twelve-man merchant ship, the Meredith Victory, the throng of Korean refugees on the docks of a city in flames, he didn't hesitate to do what others would consider impossible. In December of 1950, La Rue and his skeleton crew rescued fourteen thousand Korean refugees from the hands of the rapidly-approaching Chinese army in the city of Hungnam. Through the night and next day, a seemingly endless succession of refugees boarded the Meredith, their will to live and strong spirit steeling them against the bitter cold and incredibly crowded conditions. Standing shoulder to shoulder for three days the refugees and crew stoically endured as La Rue steered the ship through sea battle, a thirty-mile web of sea mines, and enemy shelling. "Ship of Miracles" is the incredible story of what has been called "the greatest rescue operation by a single ship in the history of mankind." Against all odds, the little merchant vessel transported its precious cargo to the island of Koje-Do on Christmas Eve completely unharmed, all fourteen thousand refugees alive and well, including an additional five new lives begun on this incredible journey. As the fiftieth anniversary of this miraculous rescue approaches, "Ship of Miracles" is as touching today as it was then; a tale you'll hold close to your heart, and return to time and again. While the United States Navy prepares to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the perilous evacuation at Hungnam and honor the Meredith Victory's miraculous feat, read this never-before-told account from the crew themselves, as they relate the incredible and unbelievable details of their three-day journey from fear to freedom.
