It was the one thing I hadn't expected to need an answer: why winners think and believe as they do. In this book, we'll call the winners "Wonks." Because they figure things out. They are constantly looking at every problem as an opportunity. Everything else before this answered how. What I do know is that it isn't linear from here on out. It's exponential. What I've uncovered and am about to tell you leads right back to a complete new world with infinite possibilities. Far from tying up loose ends, it opens massive flood gates of possibilities. That's the world you just inherited by opening this book. Lucky you. But let me first tell you the underlying secret to how Wonks ended up ruling the world... Download or read book Hotel Almighty written by Sarah J. Sloat and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visually arresting and utterly one-of-a-kind, Sarah J. Sloat's Hotel Almighty is a book-length erasure of Misery by Stephen King, a reimagining of the novel's themes of constraint and possibility in elliptical, enigmatic poems. Here, "joy would crawl over broken glass, if that was the way." Here, sleep is “a circle whose diameter might be small," a circle "pitifully small," a "wrecked and empty hypothetical circle." Paired with Sloat's stunning mixed-media collage, each poem is a miniature canvas, a brief associative profile of the psyche—its foibles, obsessions, and delights.

This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on intellect, passion, alienation, and America’s geeky subcultures. What happens when math nerds, band and theater geeks, goths, sci-fi fanatics, Young Republican debate poindexters, techies, Trekkies, D&D players, wallflowers, bookworms, and RPG players grow up? And what can they tell us about the life of the mind in the contemporary United States? With recent years bringing us phenomena from #GamerGate to The Big Bang Theory, it’s clear that nerds, policy wonks, and neoconservatives play a major role in today’s popular culture. The Year’s Work in Nerds, Wonks, and Neocons delves into subcultures of intellectual history to explore their influence on contemporary American intellectual life. Not limiting themselves to describing how individuals are depicted, the authors consider the intellectual endeavors these depictions have come to represent, exploring many models and practices of learnedness, reflection, knowledge production, and opinion in the contemporary world. As teachers, researchers, and university scholars continue to struggle for mainstream visibility, this book illuminates the other forms of intellectual excitement that have emerged alongside them and found ways to survive and even thrive in the face of dismissal or contempt.

Download or read book Art Ideology and Economics in Nazi Germany written by Alan E. Steinweis and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1933 to 1945, the Reich Chamber of Culture exercised a profound influence over hundreds of thousands of German artists and entertainers. Alan Steinweis focuses on the fields of music, theater, and the visual arts in this first major study of Nazi cultural administration, examining a complex pattern of interaction among leading Nazi figures, German cultural functionaries, ordinary artists, and consumers of culture. Steinweis gives special attention to Nazi efforts to purge the arts of Jews and other so-called undesirables. Steinweis describes the political, professional, and economic environment in which German artists were compelled to function and explains the structure of decision making, thus showing in whose interest cultural policies were formulated. He discusses such issues as insurance, minimum wage statutes, and certification guidelines, all of which were matters of high priority to the art professions before 1933 as well as after the Nazi seizure of power. By elucidating the economic and professional context of cultural life, Steinweis helps to explain the widespread acquiescence of German artists to artistic censorship and racial 'purification.' His work also sheds new light on the purge of Jews from German cultural life.
