Book Sun Tzu and the Art of Business

Download or read book Sun Tzu and the Art of Business written by Mark McNeilly and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two millennia ago the famous Chinese general Sun Tzu wrote the classic work on military strategy, The Art of War. Now, in a new edition of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business, Mark McNeilly shows how Sun Tzu's strategic principles can be applied to twenty-first century business. Here are two books in one: McNeilly's synthesis of Sun Tzu's ideas into six strategic principles for the business executive, plus the text of Samuel B. Griffith's popular translation of The Art of War. McNeilly explains how to gain market share without inciting competitive retaliation, how to attack competitors' weak points, and how to maximize market information for competitive advantage. He demonstrates the value of speed and preparation in throwing the competition off-balance, employing strategy to beat the competition, and the need for character in leaders. Lastly, McNeilly presents a practical method to put Sun Tzu's principles into practice. By using modern examples throughout the book from Google, Zappos, Amazon, Dyson, Aflac, Singapore Airlines, Best Buy, the NFL, Tata Motors, Starbucks, and many others, he illustrates how, by following the wisdom of history's most respected strategist, executives can avoid the pitfalls of management fads and achieve lasting competitive advantage.

Book excerpt: The Art of War remains the most influential strategy text in warfare. It has a great influence on East Asian and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy, sports and beyond. The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the Spring and Autumn period. 2500 year old this classic work is attributed to the ancient Chinese general Sun Tzu ("Master Sun", also spelled Sunzi, born in 544 BC and died in 496 BC). The Art of War is 13 chapters book on Strategy. The Art of War was first translated and published into French in 1772 by the French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905 under the title The Book of War. The first annotated English translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Numerous military and political leaders such as the Chinese communist revolutionary Mao Zedong, Japanese daimyo Takeda Shingen, and American military general Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. have drawn inspiration from the book. The Art of War is traditionally ascribed to Sun Tzu. It presents a philosophy of war for managing conflicts and winning battles. It is accepted as a masterpiece on strategy and has been frequently cited and referred to by generals and theorists since it was first published, translated, and distributed internationally. There are numerous theories concerning when the text was completed and concerning the identity of the author or authors, but archeological recoveries show The Art of War had taken roughly its current form by at least the early Han. Because it is impossible to prove definitively when the Art of War was completed before this date, the differing theories concerning the work's author or authors and date of completion are unlikely to be completely resolved. Some modern scholars believe that it contains not only the thoughts of its original author but also commentary and clarifications from later military theorists, such as Li Quan and Du Mu. On April 10, 1972, the Yinqueshan Han Tombs were accidentally unearthed by construction workers in Shandong. Scholars uncovered a collection of ancient texts written on unusually well-preserved bamboo strips. Sun Tzu's Art of War has influenced many notable figures. The Chinese historian Sima Qian recounted that China's first historical emperor, Qin's Shi Huangdi, considered the book invaluable in ending the time of the Warring States. In the 20th century, the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong partially credited his 1949 victory over Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang to The Art of War. The work strongly influenced Mao's writings about guerrilla warfare, which further influenced communist insurgencies around the world. In present edition of "The Art of War' in everyday English" We adapted the long-standing words of 2500-year-old Sun Tzu's Art of War to today's English keeping the original meaning intact.

There is a complete resource included."It was so much less hypermasculine and bloodthirsty and vicious than you think it is, and it's very thoughtful," Hagy said of The Art of War. "About the first read through I really saw that war was just a metaphor for hassles and problems and issues that people face in every scale of life from really petty, stupid things to really big, world-changing, 'Should we invade this country?' sorts of questions," Hagy said. Indeed, one under-appreciated feature of The Art of War is how much of it is devoted to avoiding actual fighting. "Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting," Sun Tzu wrote. Also: "The skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field." He also explained why this is: "When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be damped."Or in Hagy's updated interpretation: "Quit the awful job, or leave the dysfunctional relationship, or don't sit in traffic, go around it. That avoidance idea is applicable in so many ways." Pick your battles, as the cliche has it-which, at least the way I interpret it, is better phrased as "decline nearly all of the battles.""Sun Tzu said:The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin.Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.""When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be dampened.Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain.""In war, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns. Thus it may be known that the leader of armies is the arbiter of the people's fate, the man on whom it depends whether the nation shall be in peace or in peril.""Thus the highest form of generalship is to balk the enemy's plans; the next best is to prevent the junction of the enemy's forces; the next in order is to attack the enemy's army in the field; and the worst policy of all is to besiege walled cities. The rule is, not to besiege walled cities if it can possibly be avoided.""There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare. It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war who can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on.""The general, unable to control his irritation, will launch his men to the assault like swarming rats, with the result that one-third of his men are slain, while the town still remains untaken.Such are the disastrous effects of a siege.""Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy.Hence the saying: One may know how to conquer without being able to do it."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author draws inspiration from Sun Tzu's Art of War, a work that explains conflict between nations, and he applies this to the computer security setting, examining how we should consider protecting information systems from accidents or malicious attacks. The author first briefly introduces Sun Tzu. Then each chapter in the book takes its inspiration from an original title in The Art of War, where the author offers a general introduction to the content and then describes its application in a cybersecurity setting. These chapters cover estimates; waging war; offensive strategy; how you prepare for an attack; energy; weaknesses and strengths; the variables that need consideration before embarking on a war; how infrastructure is related to the concept of ground; attack by fire or how skilled attackers hide behind noise; and employing secret agents. The book will be interesting for computer security researchers and professionals who would like some grounding in a security mindset.
