Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maccabe's Art of Ventriloquism and Vocal Illusions: With Full Directions to Learners How to Acquire a Pleasing Vocalization; Showing How to Begin and Practice Marvellous Illustrations of Ventriloquism; With Amusing Dialogues for Beginners, Including the "Repertoire" Of the English Railway Porter The qualities required for a ventriloqulst are flexibility, ordi nary strength in the cartilaginous membrane of the throat and the muscles of abdominal regions, and a power of imitativeness. It will be readily conceded that these qualities are possessed by the majority of people who have no physical defect in these organs. But the power of imitativeness is dependent on a combi nation of qualities of the ear and the voice. The correct imitation of sounds depends entirely upon the ear. A person possessed of the most perfect and highly trained vocal organs, if he have a de fective ear, can neither sing in tune nor imitate sounds correctly, though he be endowed with every other requisite for mimicry. The province of the ear in relation to the production of sounds is very clearly and ably treated of by Dr Pardee, in a paper called The Physical Requirements of Song, published in the Lotos Leavrs, New York, 1875. Book Practical Ventriloquism

Download or read book Practical Ventriloquism written by Robert Ganthony and published by Hesperides Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To old timers Ventriloquism was a mystifying art heard at long intervals on the vaudeville stage. Because Mr Ganthony was one of the old masters who directed his work to those who wish to teach themselves - and we know that so many people might want to do just that - this 'how to' guide has been reprinted from the original plates. Mr Ganthony believed that ventriloquists were not born, but made by the desire to learn and the willingness to practice. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

  • Author : David Goldblatt
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-02-04

Download or read book Art and Ventriloquism written by David Goldblatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting collection of David Goldblatt's essays, available for the first time in one volume, uses the metaphor of ventriloquism to help understand a variety of art world phenomena. It examines how the vocal vacillation between ventriloquist and dummy works within the roles of artist, artwork and audience as a conveyance to the audience of the performer's intentions, emotions and beliefs through a created performative persona. Considering key works, including those of Nietzsche, Foucault, Socrates, Derrida, Cavell and Wittgenstein, Goldblatt examines how the authors use the framework of ventriloquism to construct and negate issues in art and architecture. He ponders 'self-plagiarism'; why the classic philosopher cannot speak for himself, but must voice his thoughts through fictional characters or inanimate objects and works. With a close analysis of two ventriloquist paintings by Jasper Johns and Paul Klee, a critical commentary by Garry L. Hagberg, and preface by series editor Saul Ostrow, Goldblatt's thoroughly fascinating book will be an invaluable asset to students of cultural studies, art, and philosophy.
