Download or read book The Art of Print written by Elizabeth Jackln and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise and beautifully illustrated introduction to printmaking that uses highlights from Tate's extensive print collection Prints have played a unique and important role in the history of art and image. This engaging book explores the numerous ways artists have embraced printmaking over the course of three centuries. Each of the works illustrated has been selected to reflect the broad spectrum of techniques and purposes, which are explained in clear and concise terms. The featured artworks are among the highlights of Tate's extensive but little-known print collection, a remarkable grouping no book has previously attempted to survey. Among the leading artists for whom printmaking has been an important and experimental part of their practice are William Hogarth, George Stubbs, William Blake, J.M.W. Turner, Pablo Picasso, Barbara Hepworth, Andy Warhol, Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego, William Kentridge, and Kara Walker. Yet printmaking remains somewhat mysterious as a topic, perhaps because original prints are often understood as "reproductions," or wrongly given a similar status to preparatory sketches and archival material. In fact, prints are finished artworks, often the result of highly considered creative experimentation with print processes. Chapters are structured around different types of printmaking, allowing each section to reveal the various ways artists have engaged with the different techniques. In addition to complete reproductions of more than 120 works, carefully selected details enable the reader to examine closely some of the remarkable visual effects seen in the prints.

Book The Art and Craft of Printing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art and Craft of Printing Classic Reprint written by William Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art and Craft of Printing Except in the case of Blunt's Love Lyrics, The Nature of Gothic, Biblia Innocentium, The Golden Legend, and The Book of Wisdom and Lies, a few copies of all the books were printed on vellum. The six copies of The Glittering Plain were printed on very fine vellum obtained from Rome, of which it was impossible to get a second supply as it was all required by the Vatican. The vellum for the other books, except for two or three copies of Poems by the Way, which were on the Roman vellum, was supplied by H. Band of Brentford, and by W. J. Turney Co. Of Stourbridge. There are three complete vellum sets in existence, and the extreme difficulty of completing a set after the copies are scattered, makes it unlikely that there will ever be a fourth. The black ink which proved most satisfactory, after that of more than one English firm had been tried, was obtained from Hanover. William Morris often spoke of making his own ink, in order to be certain of the ingredients, but his intention was never carried out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Printing in Relation to Graphic Art It is not the purpose of this book to try to establish a claim for printing that it is an art. It is hoped that it may show that the princi ples, of art may be applied to printing, and that such application may lead to improvement in some essentials of printing. Thanks are due to several experts in print ing who have read the proofs, and have given wise and acceptable counsel. I desire to acknowledge that aid has been freely sought from books upon art, and that in some instances forms of expression have been adopted from them. No originality is claimed for the allusions to art, nor for art terms and formulas employed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
