Of course, textbooks have been prepared for such purposes. But it seems to me that many of the textbooks in this field suffer from one of two distinct disadvantages: either they are composed of materials which, because of their simplicity and condescension insult the often highly developed intelligence and mature sophistication of the international student; or they are composed of materials which, mistakenly, strive to give the international student a very contemporary view of American life, and which as a result present that student with selections containing cultural assumptions far beyond his grasp.
