Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Preaching in the Light of Its History Most of the material in these lectures was gathered during a service of fifteen years in teaching Homiletics in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and in the writing of a History of Preaching. Nearly all of the first four lectures and a great deal of the fifth appeared in a series of articles in the Review and Expositor (Louisville, Ky.) during the year 1908. Thanks are dust and hereby rendered to the managers of that magazine for their kind permission to use the material in this form. The lectures were given on the Holland Foundation at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary near Ft. Worth, Texas, October 25-28, 1921.In the delivery there were necessarily some condensations and omissions for the sake of brevity, and some verbal changes here and there in order to make the lecture more acceptable to a popular audience. The author greatly valued the privilege of addressing a fine body of young ministers, together with other listeners, in a series of addresses upon the great work of the ministry as unfolded in the story of homiletical teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Preaching We have not had for thirty years a series of Lyman Beecher Lectures dealing directly with the technique of preaching. It has seemed fitting therefore that as a teacher of homiletics and as one whose main office for many years has been that of preaching, I should take up in a more intimate way the making of a sermon. True, paganism has lost none of its sullen resistance to the truth; and popery is what it was in the days Of its Gregorys and Johns; and Islamism is what it was in the days Of its Omars but the spirit Of might has departed from them all, and the ways Of access to their swarming millions are Open; and we now, more than ever, need an earnest ministry to lead on the Church to enter these ways and to occupy the land. Book Lectures on the History of Preaching Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the History of Preaching Classic Reprint written by John Ker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Preaching The author of these Lectures stood in the very front rank of the preachers both of his country and his age. His first volume of Sermons, republished on this side of the Atlantic under the title of "The Day Dawn and the Rain," and originally issued in Edinburgh in 1869, as "Sermons by Rev. John Ker," is now in its thirteenth edition in Great Britain, and has attracted the attention and called forth the commendation of the best critics. The discourses which it contains are characterized by originality of thought, simplicity of style, and a certain quiet power that carries conviction without any straining after effect. His lines of method are all natural without being obvious, and his movement along these is always singularly easy and delightful. The same qualities distinguish his second volume, which, though published after his death in 1886, is a worthy companion of the first, and has already taken its place among the homiletic models of our times. For many years before his death a nervous break-down in health incapacitated him for regular pulpit work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparing to Preach This volume is not intended as a comprehensive treat ment of the subject of homiletics, and much is necessarily omitted which should be considered by those who are preparing to preach. I have endeavored, however, to cover the ground which is traversed in the preparation and delivery of the ordinary sermon - the staple of the preacher' s pulpit work. I have profited by certain criticisms which intelligent Christian laymen sometimes pass upon the methods and manners of certain preachers and have included some sug gestions which are generally omitted from similar publi cations, such as those which will be found under The Attack Upon the Text, Pulpit Manners, and elsewhere. It is my sincere prayer that the book may be helpful to my brethren in the ministry, especially to those for whose sake it has been more particularly prepared, as indicated in the title. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching as a Fine Art If the fault were with the man we might lose hope, but every preacher has within him the power to move the human soul. If the trouble lay in the message, we might well despair, but the message wears the same glory yesterday, today and forever. That the fault lies in the method gives us encouragement and a renewed hope. For the method can be changed and must be changed. My friend Gerald Stanley Lee is kind enough to think that I have pointed out the right method, and is helping me to reach a larger audience by means of his arresting and compelling voice. Book The Work of Preaching

Download or read book The Work of Preaching written by Arthur S. Hoyt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of Preaching: A Book for the Class-Room and Study It would be impossible to state the author's indebtedness to the teachers of his youth and to the many writers upon preaching and kin dred themes. Many, no doubt, will find echoes of their thought in these pages. But grateful mention must be made of one teacher, the Rev. Dr. Herrick Johnson of Chicago, whose fire has kindled the enthusiasm of a generation of preachers for their chosen work. And grateful acknowledgment is due to the Yale Lecturers on Preaching (the richest contributors to the literature of preaching), and above the long and notable list to the ideal and example of Phillips Brooks. Every teacher of Homiletics will wish to have his own method; but the book is sent forth with the hope that it may be found help ful as a book of reference and supplemental reading, and that it may find acceptance be yond the walls of the seminary with busy men in the ministry, helping them to measure their work and to renew their ideal of preaching and their faith in its power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preaching: A Series of Brief Chapters Preaching the gospel is the most sacred work to which any man can be called. When the preacher stands up before his people to speak to them, he rep resents his Master, and must be sure that he delivers his Master's message. Those into whose faces he looks have come up into God's presence with their needs, their questions, their burdens, their sorrows, their perplexities, and are waiting to learn from the preacher's lips what God has to say to them. Even if they are not consciously in this attitude Of listen ing expectation, this is really their condition, and it is the preacher's privilege and duty to give them what they need. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Preaching, Vol. 2 These three modern centuries are of the profoundest significance in the history Of human progress. Life has been more abundant, knowledge more comprehensive and varied, the processes of civilization more rapid and complex than in any period of human history. The Reformation in the sixteenth century set in motion forces which materially altered the course of things in all time following. That mighty epoch of turmoil and readjust ment can not be sharply defined, either at its beginning or at its end, but, like all other revolutions, it is an age of transition in which causes and forces peculiar to itself become visible and emphatic, and powerfully in fluence subsequent times. Book The Message and the Messengers

Download or read book The Message and the Messengers written by Fleming James and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message and the Messengers: Lessons From the History of Preaching And this not from vainglorious motives. No eloquence was ever actuated by purer and more unselfish motives than that of Demosthenes; and yet this reaction of an audience, trained to a high ideal of public speaking, Jevons justly considers one of the three great causes of his perfection. It was the cultivated ideal of their congregations which stimulated the efforts of Bossuet and Massillon. And to-day no course would prove more effective in elevating the character of the sermon than to foster a higher ideal and a more insistent demand among the Christian laity. The author believes that a popular, but careful, account of the history of preaching, such as he now tries to give, will arouse the interest of the laity and help to educate their ideal. There is reason to believe that the pulpit needs improvement. The charge that the American pulpit is declining was made by a writer in the Forum a few years ago. I then made a laborious investigation of the case, corresponding with many of the leading authorities of several denominations; and while I became convinced that the censure cannot be sustained, still I found grave reason to believe that ministers need a more thorough training in the art of preaching.
