Book The Art of Paper Making

Download or read book The Art of Paper Making written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Paper-Making: A Guide to the Theory and Practice of the Manufacture of Paper; Being a Compilation From the Best Known French, German, and American Writers IT is very remarkable that since the Art of Paper making first struck root in this country, now more than three hundred years since, no work of any kind has appeared on the subject, of any authority or otherwise, of a technical character relating to the manufacturing process strictly and adapted to the wants of the Paper maker. The French Paper-making trade and the German have - although only within the last ten years - produced some writers on the subject, whose writings and treatises have obtained authority to some extent among them and quite recently a German writer in America has written a treatise of considerable practical merit. And the simple matter of making selections from these for the benefit of the English makers, is all we lay claim to in these pages. In the early part of the work the former have been drawn upon, and for the later portion the latter. Hence it is that some parts of this work are, we are aware, either crude, obsolete, or useless, in comparison with our most modern modes of working. But it will at least serve the purpose in laying a foundation for future efforts, of showing what our foreign neighbours, whom we are so frequently threatened are to be our future formidable competitors, have adopted, and do still use, as text-books of their modes of operation. Book Science and Civilisation in China Part 1 Paper and Printing

Download or read book Science and Civilisation in China Part 1 Paper and Printing written by Joseph Needham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-07-11 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part one of the fifth volume of Joseph Needham's great enterprise is written by one of the project's collaborators. Professor Tsien Tsuen-Hsuin, working in regular consultation with Dr Needham, has written the most comprehensive account of every aspect of paper and printing in China to be published in the West. From a close study of the vast mass of source material, Professor Tsien brings order and illumination to an area of technology which has been of profound importance in the spread of civilisation. The main body of the book is a detailed study of the invention, technology and aesthetic development of printing in China. From the growth and ultimate refinements of early woodcut printing to the spread of printing from movable type and the development of book-binding, Professor Tsien carries the story forward to the beginning of the nineteenth century when 'more printed pages existed in Chinese than in all other languages put together'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a visit to a Berkshire paper mill, the narrator of Herman Melville's "The Tartarus of Maids" views the "wonderful" papermaking machine with awe and calls it a "miracle of inscrutable intricacy." Manifesting in their factories and towns such nineteenth-century fascination with machinery, paper mill owners and workers made an industrial revolution in Berkshrie County, Massachusetts. This book examines their experiences from the era of craft production through several generations of sustained technological change to answer two major questions: What accounts for the widespread and rapid adoption of machines in nineteenth-century America? And how did the new technology help to transform America socially and culturally? Rejecting technological determinism, Judith McGaw effectively integrates labor, business, social, and women's history with technological history to bring to life the human decisions that made mechanization possible. In compelling detail the author offers new explanations of how change in the craft era paved the way for industrialization and how paternalism worked in small-scale industry. She also provides a thoughtful discussion of the interaction between evangelical culture and the emerging industrial order, and a close analysis of how nineteenth-century gender distinctions fostered mechanization. Judith A. McGaw is Assistant Professor of History of Technology at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally published in 1987. Book Productivity and Performance in the Paper Industry

Download or read book Productivity and Performance in the Paper Industry written by Gary Bryan Magee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering 1997 study examines the economic development of the British paper industry between 1860 and 1914 - an era in which it is often claimed that the origins of Britain's relative economic decline are first witnessed. For paper-making, this was also a period in which an array of important new forces, including inter alia the development of new raw materials and the move to ever larger scales of production, came on the scene. Gary Bryan Magee looks at the effect of these changes and assesses how effectively the industry coped with the new pressures, drawing upon an extensive range of quantitative and archival sources from Britain, America, and other countries. Along the way, Dr Magee addresses issues central to the understanding of industrial competitiveness, such as technological change, entrepreneurship, productivity, trade policy, and industrial relations.
