Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Masonry in Britain MY object in the following pages has been to describe briefly the origin and development of the art and craft of masonry in Britain, especially during the earlier years of its history. Volumes innumerable dealing with the history of architecture (as distinct from masonry) are in circulation. Especially is this the case with the period of the Renaissance, including the era covered by the famous works of Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, and their contemporaries and successors. Pre cisely for that reason this remarkable period in the history of British architecture has, in this volume, been dealt with more briefly than its importance would otherwise warrant. My purpose has rather been to deal with the social life and work of British masons during that period when architecture had not yet developed into a distinct calling - when the master masons of the guild designed as well as superintended the work of their fellow-craftsmen. Moreover, I have sought to relate the history of masonry from the point of view of the artificer and craftsman rather than from the more theoretic standpoint of the architect or designer. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of an Old Masonic Lodge, "the Caveac," No. 176, of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England In this case the accident was a curious one. As First Principal of the Caveae Chapter I had the privilege of exailting our Brother Colonel Green Thompson of the Caveae Lodge. I had ascertained when making some researches into the History of Royal Arch Masonry that the fourth actual Warrant granted to a Chapter was conferred on the Chapter of the Royal I'nniskilling Dragoons at York, and dated 3rd October, 1770. In proposing the health of our Companion at the Banquet I mentioned this fact as interesting to one who had lately commanded this Regiment. Companion Green Thompson asked me afterwards to obtain if possible some further facts relating to the Masonic traditions of the Regiment, as he was shortlv dining with their colonel-ih-chief, His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught, and would like to be in 11 position to refer to the matter. I promised to do so and of course visited the Grand Lodge Library. There, with the kind aid of Brother Sadler, some facts of interest were gathered together. Looking through one of the Indexesfor the word Cavah'y I came. Across the wor-d Caveae. Ithought that it referred to our present Lodge, but on looking further I 1'ou-md thati had got the wrong index, and this one related to ancient meeting places of Masonic Lodges. Thereupon followed further researches, the results of which are embodied in this little Book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mystic Circle and American Hand Book of Masonry

Download or read book The Mystic Circle and American Hand Book of Masonry written by George H. Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Circle, and American Hand-Book of Masonry: Containing a Brief History of Free Masonry in Europe and America; Symbolic Chart; Ancient Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of England; Ahiman Rezon; Constitutional Rules IN presenting this Second Edition of the Mystic Circle to the Fraternity, the Compiler begs to be understood as laying no claim to the originality of the most valuable portion of the matter contained in it, but offers it as a compilation of that practical, valuable information, which it is important that every member of the Order should possess, more especially those who expect, or wish to participate in the labors of the Craft. The work was compiled at the urgent solicitation of many intelligent and experienced Masons, who had long felt the want of such a publication. The ready sale which the first edition has met with, and the present demand for the work, have induced the publication of a second edition, in preparing which, the matter has been revised and re-arranged into a more systematic form; and while some unimportant portions have been stricken out, other valuable matter has been added. More interest is given to it by the addition of a collection of Odes, Hymns, Anthems and Songs, appropriately arranged for the various ceremonies additional information, of a gene ral character, as well as relating to Masonic jurisprudence, is also embraced. The manual, is that which has been approved, adopted and used by the various Grand Lodges for many years. Great pains have been taken to render this edition as full, perfect and complete, for all practical purposes, as any could at this time be made. Ample means being in the hands of the Compiler, he trusts that it will stand the test of a critical examination, which is solicited, as from it, the best evidence of its utility could be obtained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cryptic Masonry: A Manual of the Council, or Monitorial Instructions in the Degrees of Royal and Select Master; With an Additional Section on the Super-Excellent Master's Degree The American Rite, the name now very generally conceded to that series of degrees which are conferred in this country, is a modification of the English or Ancient York Rite, and consists, by the universal consent of all Masonic ritualists for more than half a century, of nine degrees, commencing with the Entered Apprentice, and terminating with the Select Master. To this series I desire to confine the Rite, and have no wish, as I have no authority, to extend it beyond the original number. The degree of super-excellent Master I therefore reject from the Rite, not because it is the recent invention of some prolific brain, for it is, at least, as old as some of the acknowledged degrees of the Rite - such, for instance, as that of Most Excellent Mas ter - but because neither Webb, nor Cole, nor Cross, nor any other more recent Masonic ritualist, has recognized it as constituting any part of the Rite. It has, on the contrary, until very recently, been always conferred as an honorary or detached degree, and as such it should be considered. It is an institution peculiar to Masonry on this continent, and is confined almost wholly to the United States. For much of the Masonic recognition that it enjoys, it is indebted to the late Ills. Book Illustrations of Masonry

Download or read book Illustrations of Masonry written by William Preston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Masonry: With Additions, Explanatory Notes, and the Historical Portion Continued From 1820 to the Present Time Yet, notwithstanding the necessary erasures, Masonry has advanced so steadily in public Opin ion of late years, that the dignity and importance of its proceedings would require a still greater space for their record and discussion than is thus placed at his disposal, and, therefore, the Editor feels himself obliged to accept the necessity of avoiding, as a rule, all reference to the general transactions of private Lodges, lest in recording the proceedings of one he Should be so unfortu nate as to give offence to another (although many exceptional cases have arisen where it has been found expedient to transgress this conventional limit) for if a history of all the English Lodges were to be included in our programme, a quarto would be insufficient to contain even an abridge ment of the materials and, in the present palmy state of Masonry, it would require a Parliament ary blue-book to note down even a brief analysis of all the sayings and doings of the Brethren. Thus any attempt to reduce a full account of the events of thirty years within the compass of a hundred pages, would, after all possible pains had been taken to make the record perspicuous, be to a certain extent unsatisfactory. On a reference to the additional matter, the Editor confidently hopes it will be admitted that he has attained the happy medium of sustaining the interest of his performance without the sacrifice of any partien lars which might be considered essential to the dignity and importance of historical truth.
