Book The Sporting Art of Frank W Benson

Download or read book The Sporting Art of Frank W Benson written by Faith Andrews Bedford and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2000 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Benson, a pivotal artist of the American Impressionist movement had three great loves in his long and productive life: his family, his art, and the sporting life. As a boy, Benson dreamed of being an ornithological illustrator. In mid-life, after an extremely successful career as a portraitist, he returned to the wildfowl and sporting subjects that were his lifelong passion. Over the next forty years, in etching, lithography, watercolor, and oil and wash, he portrayed birds beloved since childhood, scenes of his hunting and fishing expeditions, and still lives of incomparable delicacy. Whether painting a hunter setting out decoys, a wash of geese by moonlight, a watercolor of a companion poised to gaff a salmon, or an etching of a group of ducks silently gliding in for a landing, Benson conveyed the joy and beauty of a sportsman's life.

Book Frank W Benson American Impressionist

Download or read book Frank W Benson American Impressionist written by Faith Andrews Bedford and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Benson's masterpiece paintings of turn-of-the-century American society, New England's ports and country, and wildlife and sporting subjects, are among the most popular American works of art. His sparkling plein air painting of young women in white dresses are widely reproduced and his etchings and sporting paintings are generally considered to be some of America's best. This first full-scale monograph on Benson's entire career, summarizes his progress from his early promise as a young art student at the Academie Julian in Paris to his leading role as a teacher, portraitist, and painter in Boston and New England. Benson is particularly acclaimed for his splendid outdoor, sun-dappled portraits of members of his family, often in settings on the Maine coastline, as well as for his later, archetypal works of wildfowl, fishing, and hunting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dennis Miller Bunker (1861-1890) was one of the most talented painters of late nineteenth-century America. He was among the first Americans to use the bright colors and broken brushstrokes of the new Impressionist style; his beautiful landscapes and portraits are sought after by the most distinguished collectors of American art." "Dennis Miller Bunker: American Impressionist is the first comprehensive study of this important American artist. Trained in the academies of his native New York, Bunker continued his education in Paris, where he flourished in the sophisticated atmosphere of the world's art capital. In 1885, he accepted a teaching position in Boston. He joined the city's vibrant artistic community and developed close friendships with the writer William Dean Howells, the composer Charles Martin Loeffler, and the legendary collector Isabella Stewart Gardner, who became his champion. In Boston, Bunker also met John Singer Sargent, America's most renowned painter. The summer they spent working together in England proved to be a turning point in Bunker's career." "Bunker moved to New York in 1889. His heart remained in Boston, however, for he had fallen in love with Eleanor Hardy, the daughter of a prominent businessman. The couple married in October 1890. Barely three months later, Bunker died at age twenty-nine of a sudden illness. His beautifully crafted paintings were his only legacy.

Book The Chester Dale Collection

Download or read book The Chester Dale Collection written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chester Dale (1883-1962) is best known for the magnificent paintings he bequeathed to the National Gallery of Art, which he acquired with the expert guidance of his first wife, Maud (1876-1953). They assembled one of the finest collections in America of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings. Featuring great masterpieces of French impressionism and post-impressionism by such artists as Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, and Van Gogh, the Dale collection also includes earlier paintings that influenced these works as well as those that followed. Particular favorites of the Dales were Picasso and Modigliani, but they collected expansively--from El Greco and Boucher to George Bellows and Salvador Dalì. This lavishly illustrated volume celebrates the Chester Dale Collection at the National Gallery. Two essays and a detailed chronology document the building of the collection and the lives of the collectors, and a dramatic foldout provides a graphic presentation of the Dales' acquisition activity."--
