Book Common Practice Basketball

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-02-16
  • ISBN : 9788857243979
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Common Practice Basketball written by Carlos Rolón and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How basketball has furnished art with motifs, politics and more from pop art to contemporary portraiture From David Hammons' Higher Goals and Robert Indiana's Mecca Floor to the more recent works of Nina Chanel Abney and Titus Kaphar, basketball has proven an especially popular sport in art, whether in the depiction of players, or more abstract deployments of motifs, as in Barkley Hendricks, or as a means of treating themes of social inequality and political justice. Gathering work by more than 100 artists from the 20th century to now, this volume reveals a little-discussed point of overlap between art and sport, in part to be found in the titular phrase "common practice"--"practice" in the sense of "to perform an activity or exercise regularly in order to improve or maintain one's proficiency." This book argues that the need to rehearse, discover and explore through the act of doing makes these two very different ideas of perfecting one's craft very similar. Artists include: Nina Chanel Abney, John Baldessari, Gina Beavers, Keith Haring, Barkley Hendricks, Robert Indiana, Titus Kaphar, Robert Longo, Claes Oldenburg & Coosje Van Bruggen, Robert Rauschenberg, Niki de Saint Phalle, Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei.

Book excerpt: The Darwinian elements of survival and harmony have always attracted writers, philosophers, and artists working in all mediums, specifically, in the sport of Boxing. Sports have always played an important role in the principle and foundation of Latino Culture, specifically in the Puerto culture and its Diaspora. This is true for the artist Carlos Rolon (Dzine). the sweet science played an important role within his family household. Watching a young Howard Cosell on ABCs Wide World and the infamous No Mas fight with Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard is how the artist a young age bonded with his father. His previous publication Nailed, which the artist viewed as a love letter to his mother, Rolon sees BOXED as a homage to his father. Following the success of the Nailed, the goal is to archive how artists and documentarians have historically used boxing as a metaphor used or been inspired by the sport from its inception into contemporary culture. As with Nailed, the publication will result and include a new body of work produced by the author. Co-published with Paul Kasmin Gallery a foreword by LACMA Chief Curator Franklin Sirmans, artists featured in Boxed include Andreas Gursky, Jean- Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Gary Simmons, Satch Hoyt, Rashid Johnson, Christopher Wool, Cheryl Dunn, Terence koh, David Hammons, Ed Ruscha, Jeff Koons, George Bellows, Yoshitomo Nara, Jules De Balincourt, Paul Pfeiffer, Martine Barat, Claes Oldenburg, Glenn Ligon, Lyle Owerko, Chris Mosier and Ed Paschke, etc.

Book excerpt: Urville, the capital of a large island province, has a population of nearly 12 million, making it the one of the most significant cities in Europe. It is also entirely imaginary. Gilles Tréhin, an autistic man with exceptional creative talents and an obsession with large cities, conceived and developed Urville over the course of 20 years. He shares his vision in this beautifully illustrated guide to the city, which he renders convincingly real in nearly 300 drawings of different districts of Urville. He describes, in remarkable detail, the architectural styles of its individual buildings and provides historical, geographical, economic and cultural information. This includes historical figures and cultural anecdotes grounded in historical reality - Tréhin accounts for the effects of the Vichy regime, the Second World War and globalisation on his imagined city. This book offers fascinating evidence of and insight into the creative power of the autistic mind and will be of interest to people with autism and without.

Book Producing Local Color

Download or read book Producing Local Color written by Diane Grams and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In big cities, major museums and elite galleries tend to dominate our idea of the art world. But beyond the cultural core ruled by these moneyed institutions and their patrons are vibrant, local communities of artists and art lovers operating beneath the high-culture radar. Producing Local Color is a guided tour of three such alternative worlds that thrive in the Chicago neighborhoods of Bronzeville, Pilsen, and Rogers Park. These three neighborhoods are, respectively, historically African American, predominantly Mexican American, and proudly ethnically mixed. Drawing on her ethnographic research in each place, Diane Grams presents and analyzes the different kinds of networks of interest and support that sustain the making of art outside of the limelight. And she introduces us to the various individuals—from cutting-edge artists to collectors to municipal planners—who work together to develop their communities, honor their history, and enrich the experiences of their neighbors through art. Along with its novel insights into these little examined art worlds, Producing Local Color also provides a thought-provoking account of how urban neighborhoods change and grow.

Book Fire in the Belly

Download or read book Fire in the Belly written by Cynthia Carr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full biography of legendary East Village artist and gay activist David Wojnarowicz, whose work continues to provoke twenty years after his death 'Carr's biography is both sympathetic and compendious; it's also a many-angled account of the downtown art world of the 1980s . . . a vivid and peculiarly American story' New York Times 'A beautifully written, sympathetic, unsentimental portrait of one of the most lastingly influential late 20th century New York artists' LA Times ______________________ David Wojnarowicz was an abused child, a teen runaway who barely finished high school, but he emerged as one of the most important voices of his generation. He found his tribe in New York's East Village, a neighborhood noted in the 1970s and '80s for drugs, blight, and a burgeoning art scene. His creativity spilled out in paintings, photographs, films, texts, installations, and in his life and its recounting-creating a sort of mythos around himself. His circle of East Village artists moved into the national spotlight just as the AIDS plague began its devastating advance, and as right-wing culture warriors reared their heads. As Wojnarowicz's reputation as an artist grew, so did his reputation as an agitator-because he dealt so openly with his homosexuality, so angrily with his circumstances as a Person With AIDS, and so fiercely with his would-be censors. Fire in the Belly is the untold story of a polarizing figure at a pivotal moment in American culture-and one of the most highly acclaimed biographies of the year.
