Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interconnections and differentiations between artisanal workshops and alchemical laboratories and between the arts and alchemy from Antiquity to the eighteenth century. In particular, it scrutinizes epistemic exchanges between producers of the arts and alchemists. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the term laboratorium uniquely referred to workplaces in which ‘chemical’ operations were performed: smelting, combustion, distillation, dissolution and precipitation. Artisanal workshops equipped with furnaces and fire in which ‘chemical’ operations were performed were also known as laboratories. Transmutational alchemy (the transmutation of all base metals into more noble ones, especially gold) was only one aspect of alchemy in the early modern period. The practice of alchemy was also about the chemical production of things--medicines, porcelain, dyes and other products as well as precious metals and about the knowledge of how to produce them. This book uses examples such as the Uffizi to discuss how Renaissance courts established spaces where artisanal workshops and laboratories were brought together, thus facilitating the circulation of materials, people and knowledge between the worlds of craft (today’s decorative arts) and alchemy. Artisans became involved in alchemical pursuits beyond a shared material culture and some crafts relied on chemical expertise offered by scholars trained as alchemists. Above all, texts and books, products and symbols of scholarly culture played an increasingly important role in artisanal workshops. In these workplaces a sort of hybrid figure was at work. With one foot in artisanal and the other in scholarly culture this hybrid practitioner is impossible to categorize in the mutually exclusive categories of scholar and craftsman. By the seventeenth century the expertise of some glassmakers, silver and goldsmiths and producers of porcelain was just as based in the worlds of alchemical and bookish learning as it was grounded in hands-on work in the laboratory. This book suggests that this shift in workshop culture facilitated the epistemic exchanges between alchemists and producers of the decorative arts.

Book excerpt: * All there is to know about alchemy, in beautiful pictures and fascinating stories* Easy to read, richly illustrated with unique images and prints* By David Brafman, Curator of Rare Books at the Getty Research Institute* New book in the successful Wunderkammer series"Among all the arts, it is the art of alchemy which most closely imitates nature." - Albertus Magnus (teacher of St. Thomas Aquinas), ca.1250 Alchemists are notorious for attempting to synthesize gold. Their goals, however, were far more ambitious: to transform and bend nature to the will of an industrious human imagination. For scientists, philosophers, and artists alike, alchemy seemed to hold the key to unlocking the secrets of creation. Alchemists' efforts to discover the way the world is made have had an enduring impact on global artistic practice and expression. Concoctions produced in the world's alchemy labs include inks, dyes, and oil paints; cements and ceramic glazing; dazzling effects in metalwork and glass - and the modern media which now claim boasting rights as the ultimate chemical mirrors of nature: photography and the liquid crystal displays of the digital world. Alchemy may well be the most important human invention after the harnessing of fire. It was certainly a direct result, with consequences both inspired and dire. The field spurred on advancements in the visual arts and aids to human health. Ancient Chinese alchemists also unleashed the black magic of gunpowder onto the world of warfare. This book is the first to explore how the art of alchemy globally transformed human creative culture from antiquity to the industrial age, and displays the ways its legacy still permeates the world we make today.

Book excerpt: The Step-by-step practical guide to Inner Alchemy & the Philosopher's Stone From the dawn of humanity to the modern age, alchemy has always been a subject of great curiosity. Its mere mention brings old tales of wiseman working in smoke-filled alchemical laboratories trying to transform metals into gold whilst creating elixirs that immortalized the body. While this mythical picture is still prevalent today, the alchemical teachings and practices found in this volume are not about creating medicines or heating toxic materials in brick furnaces to create bizarre compounds but about using our body and mind as the alchemical laboratory. This book is centered on practices and procedures of Inner Alchemy, and it aims to shed new light on this ancient tradition, revealing its power to deeply transmute our body, energy, mind, and soul. Although it may appear to be an arcane discipline filled with cryptic and often unintelligible language, alchemy holds a powerful treasure once its lexicon and teachings are decoded. The secret to creating the real Philosopher's Stone and achieving true immortality is now at your disposal. The alchemical practices are divided into primary and secondary phases, which include, but are not limited to: Laboratory & Symbology Physical Alchemy Energetic Alchemy & Mystic Energy Mental Alchemy & Purification Alchemical Bonfire & the Secret Fire Alchemy of the Psyche The Conjunction of Sulfur & Mercury Inner Furnace Spiritual Alchemy & Divine Transmutation Distillation of Liquid Light World Laboratorium Metaphysical Coagulation The Philosopher's Stone Alchemical Dragon Magnum Opus, The Great Work We sincerely hope the reader enjoys this work and that it may serve as the inspirational lodestar towards the much-coveted Philosopher's Stone.
