Book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape

Download or read book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape written by Christopher S. Wood and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early sixteenth century, Albrecht Altdorfer promoted landscape from its traditional role as background to its new place as the focal point of a picture. His paintings, drawings, and etchings appeared almost without warning and mysteriously disappeared from view just as suddenly. In Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape, Christopher S. Wood shows how Altdorfer transformed what had been the mere setting for sacred and historical figures into a principal venue for stylish draftsmanship and idiosyncratic painterly effects. At the same time, his landscapes offered a densely textured interpretation of that quintessentially German locus—the forest interior. This revised and expanded second edition contains a new introduction, revised bibliography, and fifteen additional illustrations.

Book Albrecht Altdorfer The Memoir Of Renaissance Masterpieces During

Download or read book Albrecht Altdorfer The Memoir Of Renaissance Masterpieces During written by Isidra Penquite and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance, a French term that has come to describe the 'rebirth' of interest in classical art and learning, above all from Italy, from the early 14th to the mid 16th centuries. The term is applied as a stylistic label to the art of these centuries. The rediscovery of ancient coins, sculptures, and philosophical ideas contributed to debates in societies that were already changing. New religious practices placed greater emphasis on naturalistic art that could tell stories. Ancient sculpture offered extraordinary examples of this, stimulating contemporary artists who were already exploring believable ways to represent the world around them. This book contains 180+ Renaissance Reproductions of landscapes, portraits, religious and mythical subjects. The book includes Annotations (woodcut titles have been translated from German to English), Altdorfer biography, Table of Contents, and Top 50 Museums of the World. Altdorfer is formatted for all Kindle devices, Kindle for iOS and Android tablets (use rotate and/or zoom feature on landscape/horizontal images for optimal viewing). Napoleon's troops flooded across the German lands and brought the thousand-year existence of the Holy Roman Empire to a swift end. While plundering the capital of the southern German Duchy of Bavaria, Munich, they hauled off an astonishing battle-scene painting. Created three centuries earlier in nearby Regensburg, it depicted the ancient clash of Alexander the Great's forces with his Persian foes. Soon the painting could be found in the hallowed halls of the Louvre, where a visiting German critic was left marveling at this "small world of a few feet ... [a] painted Iliad." Europe's new Alexander agreed because when Prussian troops stormed Napoleon's residence in 1814 they found the Alexanderschlacht adorning his walls.

Book excerpt: In seventeenth-century northern Europe, as the Aristotelian foundations of scientia were rocked by observation, experiment, confessional strife, and political pressure, natural philosophers came to rely on the printed image to fortify their epistemologies—and none more so than René Descartes. In Skepticism’s Pictures, historian of science Melissa Lo chronicles the visual idioms that made, sustained, revised, and resisted Descartes’s new philosophy. Drawing on moon maps, political cartoons, student notebooks, treatises on practical mathematics, and other sources, Lo argues that Descartes transformed natural philosophy with the introduction of a new graphic language that inspired a wide range of pictorial responses shaped by religious affiliation, political commitment, and cultural convention. She begins by historicizing the graphic vocabularies of Descartes’s Essais and Principia philosophiae and goes on to analyze the religious and civic volatility of Descartes’s thought, which compelled defenders (such as Jacques Rohault and Wolferd Senguerd) to reconfigure his pictures according to their local visual cultures—and stimulated enemies (such as Gabriel Daniel) to unravel Descartes’s visual logic with devastating irony. In the epilogue, Lo explains why nineteenth-century French philosophers divorced Descartes’s thought from his pictures, creating a modern image of reason and a version of philosophy absent visuality. Engaging and accessible, Skepticism’s Pictures presents an exciting new approach to Descartes and the visual reception of seventeenth-century physics. It will appeal to historians of early modern European science, philosophy, art, and culture and to art historians interested in histories that give images their argumentative power.
