Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Pictures to See in America It has been no easy task to collect data and photographs from the length and breadth of this great country; in fact, it would have been impossible except for the kindly co-operation of the museum authorities of the various cities in suggesting their best pictures and sending photographs for reproduction. I wish that I might mention by name all who have aided in the work and thus thank them publicly for their assistance. As this is not feasible, the chapters devoted to the various collections will bespeak my appreciation of their wisdom. Book American Painting Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Painting Today Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Pousette-Dart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painting Today Every book which has an innate significance, seems simple because hard work and inspiration have eliminated all unessential material. The idea for this book was an outgrowth of many dynamic discussions held by the Artists for Victory, during World War II. One of these discussions gave rise to a plan to help the creative artists in this country to recognition. It was this concept of awakening the public to the high quality of the work of our artists which gave rise to the idea of a Library of Creative American Art, initiated by this volume. It was not the intent in such a library to establish what might be called an American Style inasmuch as style at its best, is an unconscious quality springing from the beliefs and emotional responses of the individual artist. Indeed, the whole world of today is a source of inspiration to the creative artist. He may be influenced by American Colonial art, by the modern developments in Europe, by Primitive Negro sculpture, by the art of the South Sea Islands or the paintings of India, Iran or Japan. Thus, the paintings reproduced here cover a wide range of expression from the sincere realism of John Sloan to the so-called pure abstractionism of Joseph Albers. In selecting work for reproduction in this book, it was decided that a committee of eminent Museum Directors from many sections of the coun try would be best qualified to make intelligent choices. This decision was in harmony with what a well-known Chicago critic once said, It is for the museum to hunt out the new talent and to invite it, on the basis of a catholic taste and rigorous standards The excellent, in the deepest meaning of that word, is what we are after in speaking of new talent; it will never be found by mass methods. However, since no selection of art by any jury or similar group, however able its members, can ever be wholly objective, the controversial nature of our selections must be recognized as well as the fact that the work of certain deserving artists may very well have been overlooked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Pictures and Their Painters Our people never were more keenly alive to the value of our native art; all over the country public galleries, dealers and private owners are giving more and more prominence to their American paintings and on all sides there is an awakened interest in American art. To be ignorant of our leading artists is not to be fully abreast of the times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract Painting in America: February 12 to March 22, 1935 I The above is my idea of The basic implications in The ab stract concept and I Think it is implicit in all The various ex planations and viewpoints which have been advanced about abstract art. The American artists who Trom various angles have orientated Themselves about The abstract idea have not in all cases been as wholeheartedly scientitic as The above con siderations would seem To call Tor. However. I believe that even in Those cases where The artistic approach has been al most entirely emotional. The concept ot The autonomous exist ence of The canvas as a reality which is parallel To nature has been recognized. IT should also be noted that The ideas sug gested above automatically explain The geometric character of many abstract works of art.
