Book excerpt: The art of the painter, sculptor and printmaker Hussein Madi has been viewed by thousands of people around the world at such venues as the British Museum, the Venice Biennale and Tokyo's Ueno Museum. However, it has never before been made available as a published retrospective. This long-overdue book contains an invaluable overview of Madi's work of four decades, in which his intensely personal fusion of European and Islamic influences always presents itself with a force that is both arresting and subtle. Madi's joyful experiments in colour and form have resulted in a unique body of work that relates to modern artists like Matisse and Picasso as well as to the principles of divine harmony that inform the abstract designs of Islamic art. Whether in two or three dimensions, Madi's lines sing with a spontaneous freedom that belies the careful, even exacting, calculations that the artist invests in each work. This combination of meticulousness and sensuality is everywhere evident in Madi's work, inspired by his profound belief in "God's universal order, in which everything is different and yet composed of the same cosmic elements." A tireless and highly prolific artist, Madi has achieved a lifetime output of virtually countless works in a variety of media. This book--with over 500 colour plates--will serve as a touchstone for both long-time admirers and initiates to his oeuvre.

Book The Epic of Difficult Choices

Download or read book The Epic of Difficult Choices written by Kamel Mohanna and published by Al Manhal. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born the year of Lebanon’s independence in 1943, in Khiyam, a village of South Lebanon, Dr. Kamel Mohanna studied, at the time of illiteracy, defying poverty to become a doctor. He forged himself a Lebanese role by joining the student movement which, in the sixties heaved France. Then in the seventies, following the path traced by Che Guevara, he joined the revolutionaries in the mountains of Dhofar. It is there that he participated in the march of ‘barefoot doctors” on the footsteps of Mao Zedong. He resisted the “mermaids” of Paris, Canada and the chic neighborhoods of Beirut. Upon his return to Lebanon, he preferred to them the misery of the Palestinian refugee camps, where he lived with the poor and sick of whom he made his cause. In the middle of the civil war, in the seventies and eighties, he travelled the length and breadth of Lebanon; not hesitating to go against all commonly accepted political precepts. In 1979, he founded the AMEL association, pacifist in time of war, open to all in time of partition, preaching the life in the shadow of the collective suicide. Until today and through this non-denominational organization, he endeavors to develop the humanity of human beings, without taking into account its religious, political and geographical affiliations, to attain a more just and dignified world. Book Always Coca Cola

  • Author : Alexandra Chreiteh
  • Publisher : Interlink Publishing

  • ISBN : 1623710057
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Always Coca Cola written by Alexandra Chreiteh and published by Interlink Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrator of Always Coca-Cola, Abeer Ward (fragrant rose, in Arabic), daughter of a conservative family, admits wryly that her name is also the name of her father’s flower shop. Abeer’s bedroom window is filled by a view of a Coca-Cola sign featuring the image of her sexually adventurous friend, Jana. From the novel’s opening paragraph—“When my mother was pregnant with me, she had only one craving. That craving was for Coca-Cola”—first-time novelist Alexandra Chreiteh asks us to see, with wonder, humor, and dismay, how inextricably confused naming and desire, identity and branding are. The names—and the novel’s edgy, cynical humor—might be recognizable across languages, but Chreiteh’s novel is first and foremost an exploration of a specific Lebanese milieu. Critics in Lebanon have called the novel “an electric shock.”

Book Out of Beirut

Download or read book Out of Beirut written by Modern Art Oxford and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beirut had been a renowned resort and a center of culture and style for hundreds of years, when, in the late twentieth century, it became the site of terrible violence and trauma. More than 15 years after the official end of Lebanon's civil war in 1990, political instability, bombings and assassinations still dominate the international headlines, obscuring years of swift change. In that time, Beirut became fertile ground for radical and innovative art-making and critical thought. "Out of Beirut" introduces new and recent work by artists who have been at the forefront of that activity, and who, in this new time of turmoil and change, will be watching Beirut's fate closely, chronicling it, and perhaps by their responses, changing it. With work by Fadi Abdallah, Gilbert Hage, Heartland, Bernard Khoury, Rabib Mroue, Walid Raad, Walid Sadek, Jalal Toufic, Paola Yacoub and Michel Lasserre and Akram Zaatari, among others.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Trager
  • Publisher : Georgetown University Press
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 1626163626
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Arab Fall written by Eric Trager and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood win power so quickly after the dramatic "Arab Spring" uprising that ended President Hosni Mubarak's thirty-year reign in February 2011? And why did the Brotherhood fall from power even more quickly, culminating with the popular "rebellion" and military coup that toppled Egypt's first elected president, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi, in July 2013? In Arab Fall, Eric Trager examines the Brotherhood's decision making throughout this critical period, explaining its reasons for joining the 2011 uprising, running for a majority of the seats in the 2011-2012 parliamentary elections, and nominating a presidential candidate despite its initial promise not to do so. Based on extensive research in Egypt and interviews with dozens of Brotherhood leaders and cadres including Morsi, Trager argues that the very organizational characteristics that helped the Brotherhood win power also contributed to its rapid downfall. The Brotherhood's intensive process for recruiting members and its rigid nationwide command-chain meant that it possessed unparalleled mobilizing capabilities for winning the first post-Mubarak parliamentary and presidential elections. Yet the Brotherhood's hierarchical organizational culture, in which dissenters are banished and critics are viewed as enemies of Islam, bred exclusivism. This alienated many Egyptians, including many within Egypt's state institutions. The Brotherhood's insularity also prevented its leaders from recognizing how quickly the country was slipping from their grasp, leaving hundreds of thousands of Muslim Brothers entirely unprepared for the brutal crackdown that followed Morsi's overthrow. Trager concludes with an assessment of the current state of Egyptian politics and examines the Brotherhood's prospects for reemerging.

Book Huguette Caland

  • Author : Anne Barlow (Art museum curator)
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-07
  • ISBN : 9781849766791
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Huguette Caland written by Anne Barlow (Art museum curator) and published by . This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lebanese artist Huguette Caland (b.1931) has her first UK museum solo exhibition at Tate St Ives. Taken from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, many of the works will be shown in the UK for the first time, revealing her artistic significance. Caland's exploratory practice has had a key, if under-recognised, role in the development of international modern art. In the 1970s, after moving to Paris from Beirut, she created exuberant and erotically-charged paintings, which challenged traditional conventions of beauty and desire. The female physique is a recurrent motif in her work, depicted as landscapes or amorphous forms. Caland has often used her own body as a subject, and her self-representation comes from a desire to liberate and control how her own body and the bodies of other women are depicted. The exhibition will include large canvases with bright colours, such as her Bribes de corps (Body Parts) series from the 1970s, softly moving from abstraction into figuration, with shapes doubling as flesh. Alongside these paintings are Caland's intricate drawings, which demonstrate her mastery of line. In these works, portraits of friends and lovers transform into landscapes, and landscapes into overtly sexualized body parts."--From publisher.
