Book The Art and History of Popeye

Download or read book The Art and History of Popeye written by R. C. Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When cartoonist Elzie Segar created Popeye, as a minor character ten years into the run of the Thimble Theatre strip in 1929, little did he know that the world's most famous sailor would still be around over ninety years later and still being offered as a Sunday feature. To celebrate Popeye, the character, the comic strip and his universe, a feature cartoonist Charles M. Schulz described as "perfect... consistent in drawing and humor," Hermes Press is publishing the definitive art monograph on the subject. This 300 plus page book features a comprehensive essay written by pop culture historian R.C. Harvey accompanied by over 350 illustrations of original strip and comic book art, animation art, illustrations, advertising art, products, the Robert Altman film, and everything Popeye. Every aspect of Popeye is explored, from Olive Oyl and Eugene the Jeep to Wimpy and Bluto. So, if you've ever read the strip, watched the cartoons, seen the movie, or ever eaten spinach and wondered if you'll have super-powers, this new comprehensive history is a must.

  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Popeye written by Fred Grandinetti and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the rare comic character who can make people laugh for three-quarters of a century - but it's a pretty rare cartoon hero who can boast of forearms as thick as his waist, who can down a can of spinach in a single gulp, and who faces the world with one eye squinted shut. E. C. Segar's gruff but lovable sailor man first tooted his pipe to the public on January 7, 1929, on the comics page of the New York Journal, as Segar's Thimble Theatre strip. Over the decades to come, Popeye was to appear in the longest running cartoon series in film history, and on radio, television and stage - and even in a live-action feature film. This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated history is a thoroughly updated and revised edition of the highly acclaimed 1994 work ("no other book comes close" - Big Reel; "comprehensive...dedicated Popeye fans will welcome it" - Inks; "excellent" - Pop Art Times). The different directions each studio took with the animated series and films are examined, as are the changing character designs of the Popeye family. Popeye's appearances in other media - comics, books, radio, and a stage play - are thoroughly covered, as are Robert Altman's 1980 live-action film and Popeye memorabilia. -- from back cover.

Book The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer

Download or read book The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer written by Ray Pointer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of animated cartoons has for decades been dominated by the accomplishments of Walt Disney, giving the impression that he invented the medium. In reality, it was the work of several pioneers. Max Fleischer--inventor of the Rotoscope technique of tracing animation frame by frame over live-action footage--was one of the most prominent. By the 1930s, Fleischer and Disney were the leading producers of animated films but took opposite approaches. Where Disney reflected a Midwestern sentimentality, Fleischer presented a sophisticated urban attitude with elements of German Expressionism and organic progression. In contrast to Disney's naturalistic animation, Fleischer's violated physical laws, supporting his maxim: "If it can be done in real life, it isn't animation." As a result, Fleischer's cartoons were rough rather than refined, commercial rather than consciously artistic--yet attained a distinctive artistry through Fleischer's innovations. This book covers his life and work and the history of the studio that bore his name, with previously unpublished artwork and photographs.

Book Popeye the Classic Newspaper Comics by Bobby London Volume 2 1989 1992

Download or read book Popeye the Classic Newspaper Comics by Bobby London Volume 2 1989 1992 written by Bobby London and published by Library of American Comics. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we say "complete," we mean COMPLETE! Bobby London's take on the Sailor Man has often been overshadowed by his being fired from the strip in 1992, ostensibly for presenting a storyline that was an allegory about abortion. In that ultimate tale, Olive had become addicted to the Home Shopping Network and ordered a Baby Brutus mechanical doll. When Popeye insists that she get rid of the "baby," two priests mistakenly believe that the baby is real and that Olive is going to exercise her pro-choice rights. King Features Syndicate pulled the final three weeks of strips and daily newspapers began running reprints. Story over in mid-stream. Now, twenty-two years later, thanks to the kind cooperation of the good folks at King Features, those three weeks will be included in this second volume of the IDW series. But wait...that's not all! Turns out that Bobby London produced an additional six weeks of strips beyond the three that were pulled from syndication! This book contains -- for the first time anywhere -- all nine weeks of "censored" Bobby London Popeye strips. Trust us, it's worth the wait!
