Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ultimate God, being transcendent, is beyond description in literal terms; our knowledge of the divine nature must be indirect. A prime means of such an indirect approach to the divine is through the religious mythologies that have captivated humankind throughout recorded time, and even earlier. After considering the limitations of scientific thinking in dealing with questions of ultimate meaning and value, Anthony O’Hear argues that we should be open to taking religious mythologies seriously. We could, and probably should, see each of these mythologies as partial revelations, each capturing some aspect of the divine. They aim at truth, and should be valued as such, for their own particular insights and traditions of practice, but no single myth can capture the whole truth. Each is necessarily filtered through fallible human imagery and thought. So, while respecting and prioritizing our own favored myth, we should also be open to illumination from myths originating in different times and cultures for their own unique vision and approach.

Book excerpt: Exploding onto the eschatalogical scene with a deafening roar, Endgame shatters the status quo with respect to endtime Bible prophecy, detonating centuries' worth of assumption and subjective "fact." By providing the Bible space to interpret itself, the key which unlocks the mysteries of Revelation is revealed to have been within the possession of mankind all along, hidden for millennia in "plain sight." Although Man has long preferred to lean upon his own understanding, the logic of mortals is not equal to the task of assembling the pieces of a Divinely-constructed image, a fact which accounts for the numerous conflicting views and failed predictions of establishment experts. The true account has been set down in God's own hand, scattered throughout His Word which the prophets were inspired to utter, and which holy men of old were moved to record. Includes a bonus Tribulation Survival Guide

Book The Legend of Guy of Warwick

Download or read book The Legend of Guy of Warwick written by Velma Bourgeois Richmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This lavishly illustrated study is a comprehensive literary and social history which offers a record of changing genres, manuscript/book production, and cultural, political, and religious emphases by examining one of the most long lived popular legends in England. Guy of Warwick became part of history when he was named in chronicles and heraldic rolls. The power of the Earls of Warwick, especially Richard de Beauchamp, inspired the spread of the legend, but Guy's highest fame came in the Renaissance as one of the Nine Worthies. Widely praised in texts and allusions, Guy's feats were sung in ballads and celebrated on the stage in England and France. The first Anglo-Norman romance of Gui de Warewic, a Saxon hero of the tenth century was written in the early 13th century; the latest retellings of the legend are contemporary. Examples of Guy's legend can be found in two English translations that survived the Middle Ages, a new French prose romance, a didactic tale in the Gesta Romanorum, and late medieval versions in Celtic, German, and Catalan, as well as English. Guy remained a favorite Edwardian children's story and was featured in the Warwick Pageant, an historical extravaganza of 1906. The patriotism of World War II sparked a resurgence of interest that produced several new versions, mostly folkloric.
