Book excerpt: Describes the twelve campaigns fo r whichthe India General Service Medal 1908-1935 was awarded - North West Frontier1908; Abor 1911-12; Afghanistan North West Frontier 1919; Mahsud 1919-20; Waziristan 1919-21; Malabar 1921-22; Waziristan 1921-24; Waziristan 1925; North West Frontier 1930-31; Burma 1930-32; Mohmand 1933; North West Frontier 1935. Includes the Medal Rolls of the British Army and Royal Air Force are published for all officer entitlements, all multi-clasp recipients, and all personnel of units present in less than battalion strength - in all, a total of more than 14,000 names (civilians included). Recipients of single-clasp medals who served with regiments and units present in full strength are not included, partly because of the sheer volume of names and partly because verification of these medals on the original rolls is not so complex. The many difficulties of using the original rolls and on-line versions are explained in the Introduction. Hence the published rolls in this book make it straightforward for collectors and military historians to check officer, multi-clasp and 'odd men' entitlements to the India General Service Medal 1908-1935. The degree of rarity of medals for any given campaign clasp(s) to individual regiments or units (including the Royal Air Force) is specified. In addition, this volume includes: Rolls of Honour for the British Establishment; Orders of Battle for the British and Indian Establishments with the names of Commanding Officers; and many previously unpublished photographs.

Book Army of the Sutlej 1845 6 Casualty Roll

Download or read book Army of the Sutlej 1845 6 Casualty Roll written by From the India Office Records and published by . This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This medal, sanctioned in 1846, was the first campaign award issued to all ranks with clasps, although clasps had been awarded on the Gold Crosses and Medals issued to officers for the peninsular Wars. The basic design of this medal set a precedent in campaign awards that has been generally adhered to ever since.Another unusual facet to this medal is that the name of the first battle at which the recipient was present is found at the bottom of the reverse; thus medals with one clasp are found to recipients who were at two actions, and so on.Those who were at all four battles for which clasps were awarded could only receive three clasps, and no clasp was issued for Moodkee , it being the first battle of the campaign. The 1845-46 Sikh War was a difficult one, as theSikh army was well-trained and armed. As a result, British Casualties at the four actions were heavy. However, the campaign was short and concentrated, lasting only three months, and the Sikhs returned for a further conflict with the British two years later (see Punjab Medal 1848-49). The medal is found named in two main styles; to British troops, in thin, upright impressed capitals, a rather distinctive style notable for the use of colons instead of full stops; and to Indian troops in engraved running script. The list of casualties have been compiled from the Sutlej Medal Rolls held at the India Office Library. The list is by regiments and gives the nature of the casualty, date and battle in which incurred: Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur, Aliwal or Sobraon. Those invalided home are also identified.

Book Military General Service Medal Roll 1793 1814

Download or read book Military General Service Medal Roll 1793 1814 written by Alt Mullen and published by . This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This medal, sanctioned in 1847 and issued in 1848, was awarded for services during the Napoleonic Wars 1801-14.It had been planned to award the medal for battles and campaigns as far back as 1793, but such was the time lapse that very few claimants would have come forward, and therefore the first clasp awarded was that for Egypt , for the campaign of 1801.Some 25,000 medals were issued with an almost infinite variety of the 29 clasps issued, the maximum on one medal being fifteen. The great variety of clasps and regiments found on this medal make it one of the most interesting of all campaign awards. The time lapse between the actual battles and the issue of the medal meant that only a small number of survivors from each regiment lived to receive the award. In addition, there were survivors who did not know about or could not claim the medal. Most of the clasps were awarded for service during the Peninsular War of 1811-14, although six clasps were issued for the Peninsula War of 1808-09.In addition, there were three clasps for services in Canada, two for services in the West Indies, and one each for Egypt (1801), Maida (Southern Italy 1806), and Java (1811).The obverse is the usual Wyon head of Victoria, with the date 1848 at the foot, whilst the reverse depicts Victoria placing a laurel wreath on Wellington as he kneels before her; there is also an inscription, and the British Lion is represented. The clasps were struck in groups of three where applicable, and then riveted together. The suspension is by a straight, swivelling suspension. The naming is always in impressed Roman capitals. There are too many rarities to detail both in terms of the clasps and the regiments, but it should be borne in mind that only about 10% of those who fought in these battles and campaigns lived to receive the medal, and that, when the number that have been lost, destroyed or placed in museums is taken into acount, this medal can be described as scarce and a considerable number of issues as rare.

Later extended to women who showed bravery under fire. There was also a provision for the award of a bar for each further act of bravery. All MMs issued to British personnel are named, usually in impressed capitals, During the First World War some 115,000 awards were made, with 5,800 first bars and 180 second bars. There was one award of the MM and three bars. All issued MMs have a notification in the London Gazette. It is rare to find a citation for the Military Medal in the Gazettes It is possible that the reasons for the award will be found in the war diary of the man's unit. (available @ http: //www.nmarchive.com/ and on CD-ROM ). Also some details can appear in Regimental Histories and very rarely an original Divisional citation document that was given to the recipient will have survived. Book Discipline System and Style

Download or read book Discipline System and Style written by John Harvey Rumsby and published by War and Military Culture in So. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixteenth Lancers already had a long and distinguished history when they sailed for India in 1822. Over the next twenty four years they fought in four wars, most famously in the Sutlej campaign, against the Sikhs. The Battle of Aliwal, in January 1846, is still celebrated by the successor regiment of the British Army. In their peacetime life in India, the Sixteenth sometimes enjoyed their exotic surroundings, but also endured the perils of a tropical climate - the regiment lost far more men due to disease than in battle. This book examines in detail what regimental soldiering was like in India in those years. It draws on an unprecedented range of sources, most of them previously unpublished. Aside from the official archives, the story is enlivened by a rich collection of journals, letters and diaries left by the officers and men. An important feature of the book is the detailed roll of every officer and man who served in the Sixteenth in the Sutlej. This provides a unique profile of the ranks at Aliwal: where they came from, what skills they brought to the army, why they enlisted, and what happened to them in their army career and afterwards. Some surprising results have been revealed: the high rate of literacy, the high suicide rates, and the proportion of men who stayed on in India when their regiment returned home. The officers were highly experienced and professional, in stark contrast to the amateur attitudes of their fellows in the Crimea. All aspects of regimental soldiering are examined - command, uniforms and weapons, horses, training and medical services, but also how the men lived and played (the Sixteenth's theater was famous). Many officers and men were from army families, and the period covered shows soldiers' sons growing up in the regiment and often reaching high rank. This unique 'social history' approach to the study of a British regiment will appeal to a wide audience; not only to students and academic staff studying military and social history, but also to students of Indian history, and to family historians with army ancestors. The account of the Sutlej campaign is relevant to the worldwide Sikh community. The nominal roll of the regiment will be appreciated by medal collectors, for whom an 'Aliwal' medal to the regiment has a special allure. The successor regiment of the Sixteenth Lancers is again serving in Afghanistan, so that this book has a topical resonance.
