Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antietam and Fredericksburg IN preparing this book, I have made free use of the material furnished by my own recollection, memoranda, and correspondence. I have also consulted many vol umes by different hands. As I think that most readers are impatient, and With reason, of quotation-marks and foot-notes, I have been sparing of both. By far the tar gest assistance I have had, has been derived from ad vance sheets of the Government publication of the Reports of Military Operations During the Rebellion, placed at my disposal by Colonel Robert N. Scott, the officer in charge of the War Records Office of the War Department of the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antietam and Fredericksburg The campaigns in the East in the summer of 1862 were a disappointment to the North. McClellan and the Army of the Potomac not only did not capture Richmond or disable the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, but were forced back from the furthest point of their advance. Though they inflicted heavy loss upon the enemy, they suffered heavy losses themselves, in men, guns, and property of all kinds. The last serious fighting they did in the Peninsular campaign was at Malvern Hill, on July 1st, and no further events of importance took place in that region. The army was withdrawn from the Peninsula, under the orders of the Government, in the following month of August. Whether McClellan himself had failed, and whether he was not in a better position for offensive operations when he was withdrawn than he had ever occupied elsewhere, is an interesting question, but one which does not fall within the scheme of this volume to discuss. Book Faces of Union Soldiers at Fredericksburg

Download or read book Faces of Union Soldiers at Fredericksburg written by Matthew Borders and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look into the eyes of these soldiers and see the faces of those who dared to stare into the face of Death. The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought December 11-15, 1862, is often remembered for the seemingly futile attacks by the Army of the Potomac against dug in Confederates on Marye's Heights. Less well understood is the fighting south of the heights on what has become known as Slaughter Pen Farm. In this work the images of thirty Union soldiers are published for the first time. They give a face and history to those men who struggled across that bloody landscape, as well as to those that charged up the slope of Marye's Heights into Confederate fire. Authors Matthew Borders and Joseph Stahl introduce you to these men, their stories and their sacrifice on the bullet swept battlefield of Fredericksburg.

Book Thomas Francis Meagher and the Irish Brigade in the Civil War

Download or read book Thomas Francis Meagher and the Irish Brigade in the Civil War written by Daniel M. Callaghan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When President Lincoln issued his 1861 call to arms, the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Volunteers were among the first to step forward. Comprised primarily of first and second generation Irish immigrants, these three regiments were later joined by the 28th Massachusetts and the 116th Pennsylvania. Suffering heavy casualties, this Irish Brigade, commanded by Thomas Francis Meagher, was one of the most famous fighting groups of the Civil War. This work provides a balanced, historically factual picture of the Irish Brigade and its commander, focusing on their role in the Seven Days' battles and at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Primary sources range from veterans' memoirs published just after the war to letters and memoirs published as recently as 1996.
