Book US Defense Budget Outcomes

Download or read book US Defense Budget Outcomes written by Heidi Brockmann Demarest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic guide to the allocation of American taxpayer dollars used to provide for the common defense. With engaging and illustrative examples like the narrative of a helicopter purchase, it reveals an unexpectedly chaotic political process that produces a conversely stable aggregate defense budget. The book explores specific attempts to control or influence these turbulent funding outcomes as Congress reviews the Presidential budget request. Containing data and sources largely unavailable to researchers without access to the Department of Defense, the book should be of interest to anyone looking for a direct, current, and methodical analysis of defense budget outcomes that preserves the informal and nuanced mechanics of a political and complicated process.

Book Unified Action Partners Quick Reference Guide

Download or read book Unified Action Partners Quick Reference Guide written by United States Army and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quick reference guide describes U.S. Army organizations, planning, and operations. Unified action partners (UAPs) are those military forces, of the private sector with whom U.S. Army forces plan, coordinate, synchronize, and integrate during the conduct of operations (Army Doctrine Reference Publication 3-0, Unified Land Operations).UAPs include joint forces (activities in which elements of two or more U.S. military departments participate), multinational forces, and U.S Government (USG) agencies and departments. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars highlight the necessity for collaboration, cooperation, and synchronization among USG, NGOs, and private sector agencies to focus the elements of national power in achieving national strategic objectives. Our experience in these conflicts accentuates the importance of foreign governments, agencies, and militaries participating, in concert with the United States, to achieve common objectives. Meeting the challenges of complex environments, infused with fragile or failing nation states, non-state actors, pandemics, natural disasters, and limited resources, requires the concerted effort of all instruments of U.S. national power plus foreign governmental agencies, military forces, and civilian organizations.

Book Combat Ready The Eighth U S Army on the Eve of the Korean War

Download or read book Combat Ready The Eighth U S Army on the Eve of the Korean War written by Thomas E. Hanson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historians and sliders have not been kind to either [General Douglas] MacArthur or the soldiers whom he placed in harm's way in the summer of 1950 ... This study seeks to redress the imbalance that exists between fact and interpretation. For too long historians and soldiers have roundly criticized Task Force Smith's performance, extrapolated from its fate a set of assumptions about what constitutes readiness, and then used those assumptions to condemn the entire Eighth Army. The reality is much more complex. A proper examination of the historical record reveals wide disparities in the readiness and combat effectiveness of the subordinate units of America's first forward-deployed Cold War field force ... This work will demonstrate how units achieved that readiness by means of case studies of four infantry regiments, one from each of the four infantry divisions that constituted the Eighth Army in 1950. It synthesizes contemporary training doctrine, training records generated by maneuver units, unit histories, reports of inspections by outside agencies, contemporary self-assessments, and the observations of veterans who served in Japan in the fifteen months before the outbreak of the Korean War. It challenges the long-standing reputation of the Eighth Army as flabby, dispirited, and weak"--Introduction.

Book Army of the Nineties

Download or read book Army of the Nineties written by Frances M. Lussier and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Admin. of Pres. Ronald Reagan has made a concerted effort to modernize & improve the Army, investing $415 billion (in FY1987 dollars) from 1980 through 1986 in new equipment, better pay & benefits for its soldiers, repairs & maintenance of its facilities, & stockpiles of war reserves. The Army still has, however, areas that it feels could be further improved. This analysis projects future Army budgets that would be required to meet the goals that the Army has established for itself for the period from 1987 through 1991. It also examines the effects that lower rates of budget growth might have on the Army¿s plans & future force structure. The study makes no recommendations. Charts & tables.

Book Evaluation of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Review Process

Download or read book Evaluation of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Review Process written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medical research landscape in the United States is supported by a variety of organizations that spend billions of dollars in government and private funds each year to seek answers to complex medical and public health problems. The largest government funder is the National Institutes of Health (NIH), followed by the Department of Defense (DoD). Almost half of DoD's medical research funding is administered by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The mission of CDMRP is to foster innovative approaches to medical research in response to the needs of its stakeholdersâ€"the U.S. military, their families, the American public, and Congress. CDMRP funds medical research to be performed by other government and nongovernmental organizations, but it does not conduct research itself. The major focus of CDMRP funded research is the improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, or conditions that affect service members and their families, and the general public. The hallmarks of CDMRP include reviewing applications for research funding using a two-tiered review process, and involving consumers throughout the process. Evaluation of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Review Process evaluates the CDMRP two-tiered peer review process, its coordination of research priorities with NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and provides recommendations on how the process for reviewing and selecting studies can be improved.
