Book A Cardboard Castle

Download or read book A Cardboard Castle written by Vojtech Mastny and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-10 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to document, analyze, and interpret the history of the Warsaw Pact based on the archives of the alliance itself. As suggested by the title, the Soviet bloc military machine that held the West in awe for most of the Cold War does not appear from the inside as formidable as outsiders often believed, nor were its strengths and weaknesses the same at different times in its surprisingly long history, extending for almost half a century. The introductory study by Mastny assesses the controversial origins of the "superfluous" alliance, its subsequent search for a purpose, its crisis and consolidation despite congenital weaknesses, as well as its unexpected demise. Most of the 193 documents included in the book were top secret and have only recently been obtained from Eastern European archives by the PHP project. The majority of the documents were translated specifically for this volume and have never appeared in English before. The introductory remarks to individual documents by co-editor Byrne explain the particular significance of each item. A chronology of the main events in the history of the Warsaw Pact, a list of its leading officials, a selective multilingual bibliography, and an analytical index add to the importance of a publication that sets the new standard as a reference work on the subject and facilitate its use by both students and general readers.

Book Joint Contact Team Program

Download or read book Joint Contact Team Program written by Robert T. Cossaboom and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union and the emergence of successor governments in Central and Eastern Europe presented the United States and its allies from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) a major challenge-how to assist the new governments to develop and institutionalize democracy. One particular concern was the functioning of the military in a democratic government. For forty years or more, all of these countries had been communist dictatorships with senior members of the Communist Party occupying seats of rank in the government and military. While in theory the civilian government, usually the president, controlled the military, in practice, the Communist Party was in control. In addition, most military planning was done by the Soviet Union under the facade of the Warsaw Fact.

Book Organizing for Coalition Warfare

Download or read book Organizing for Coalition Warfare written by Michael Sadykiewicz and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Soviet armed forces are justly regarded as the greatest threat to Western Europe, NATO military planners must consider the strength and the role of the armies of the non-Soviet Warsaw Pact (NSWP) nations in any future war. In this study, conclusions regarding the military value, employment, and control of NSWP forces are drawn from the historical record, Soviet doctrine, current published orders of battle, Warsaw Pact military exercises, and the author's experience in the Polish army. After describing Soviet and Warsaw Pact military doctrines, the author examines the quantitative and qualitative role of the NSWP forces, their armaments, and the problems of Pact interoperability. Finally, he analyzes in detail the wartime operational role of the East European armies, including their echelonment, operational utility and tasks, strategic/operational grouping, and operational autonomy.

Book Artillery of the Warsaw Pact

Download or read book Artillery of the Warsaw Pact written by Russell Phillips and published by Shilka Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered to be “the god of modern war” by the Soviet army, artillery played a vital role in the Cold War period. The armies of the Warsaw Pact made artillery a cornerstone of their military strategies. And the importance they placed on this type of weaponry saw them use their technology and expertise to develop a wide range of munitions including mortars, rocket launchers, missiles and large-calibre guns. Artillery of the Warsaw Pact provides a compelling and detailed account of the artillery used by Warsaw Pact countries and the important role it played during this period of suspicion, tension and unease. The powerful weapons created at this time had the potential to destroy significant enemy resources, posing a very real threat to NATO forces. This book will allow you to gain an insight into the way in which artillery was used by the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact nations. Read about mortars ranging from light 50mm weapons to enormous 240mm breech-loaded versions capable of destroying fortified buildings from a distance. Artillery of the Warsaw Pact also looks at the widespread use of towed guns as well as the growth in popularity of self-propelled guns. The book also details how Second World War weapons like multiple rocket launchers continued to play a key part in the Cold War hostilities, alongside newly-developed artillery, including tactical ballistic missiles which Khrushchev viewed as a critical part of his response to the threat posed by the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been published on the armed forces of the USSR during the 1980s, surprisingly little is available on the forces supplied by the other member nations of the Warsaw Pact. Rivalling the size of the United States Army, the combined ground forces of the six non-Soviet Warsaw Pact countries totalled over 775,000 active troops, with almost two million ground forces reserves. This book examines the history, organization and uniforms of the often overlooked DDR, Czechoslovak, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Romanian forces at the end of the Cold War.

Book The East German Army

Download or read book The East German Army written by Thomas M. Forster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1980, provides a detailed analysis of the East German army in the last decade of the Cold War. It examines the capabilities of the main force, after the Soviet army, in the Soviet Bloc, and shows how it depended on more things than purely military factors and national policies. It focuses the army as part of a society that had been comprehensively militarized through ‘socialist military education’, and shows that it was closely tied to the Soviet army, with no military doctrine of its own. In this way, this book provides an analysis of not just East German domestic policies, over which its army held great sway, but also of Soviet Bloc strategic planning for conflict in Western Europe.

Book Joint Contact Team Program

Download or read book Joint Contact Team Program written by Robert T. Cossaboom and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War and the collapse of communist dictatorships across Central and Eastern Europe provided a unique opportunity for the spread of democracy. As the world's premier democracy, the United States had a leading role in assisting the newly freed states, giving the military a new mission in Europe in the form of the Joint Contact Team Program (JCTP). Providing assistance to fledging democracies was not a new experience for the military, but this time the countries participating in the contact program were all recent enemies. Most were former members of the Warsaw Pact. Some, in fact, had been constituent republics of the Soviet Union. Events offered by the contact program went beyond military specialties because US planners were concerned that the military establishment in the new democracies would engage in activities disruptive to the civilian government. For this reason, the program was designed to provide information on a broad range of subjects that were expected to highlight the tole of the military in a democracy. The United States European Command (USEUCOM), as the theater command, faced some challenges in implementing the JCTP since finding personnel who were language-qualified was initially difficult and was resolved only by drawing on the National Guard and Reserve. Use of Reserve component members had the added advantage of offering the host nations a firsthand demonstration of the capabilities of citizen-soldiers. All the while working with the host nations, contact team members had to exercise caution not to appear as replacements for the recently departed Russian advisors. From the development and execution stage of the program, a number of the strengths and weaknesses of US military planning was brought to light. Among the obstacles was a reluctance on the part of the military to accept "non-standard" missions, to fund a new program out of the budget cycle, and to find language-trained personnel. On the positive side, the program highlighted the viability of the "total force" concept, the ability to improvise, and the enthusiasm of the new democracies to establish working relationships with the US military.

Download or read book Blueprints for Battle written by Jan Hoffenaar and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While scholarship abounds on the diplomatic and security aspects of the Cold War, very little attention has been paid to military planning at the operational level. In Blueprints for Battle, experts from Russia, the United States, and Europe address this dearth by closely examining the military planning of NATO and Warsaw Pact member nations from the end of World War II to the beginning of détente. Informed by material from recently opened archives, this collection investigates the perceptions and actions of the rival coalitions, exploring the challenges presented by nuclear technology, examining how military commanders' perceptions changed from the 1950s to the 1960s, and discussing logistical coordination among allied states. The result is a detailed study that offers much-needed new perspectives on the military aspects of the early Cold War.

Book The Warsaw Pact Reconsidered

Download or read book The Warsaw Pact Reconsidered written by Laurien Crump and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Warsaw Pact is generally regarded as a mere instrument of Soviet power. In the 1960s the alliance nevertheless evolved into a multilateral alliance, in which the non-Soviet Warsaw Pact members gained considerable scope for manoeuvre. This book examines to what extent the Warsaw Pact inadvertently provided its members with an opportunity to assert their own interests, emancipate themselves from the Soviet grip, and influence Soviet bloc policy. Laurien Crump traces this development through six thematic case studies, which deal with such well known events as the building of the Berlin Wall, the Sino-Soviet Split, the Vietnam War, the nuclear question, and the Prague Spring. By interpreting hitherto neglected archival evidence from archives in Berlin, Bucharest, and Rome, and approaching the Soviet alliance from a radically novel perspective, the book offers unexpected insights into international relations in Eastern Europe, while shedding new light on a pivotal period in the Cold War.
