Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wellborn Root: A Study of His Life and Work We have sympathized with sorrow, - you and I and all of us. But which of us has the rarer gift of sympathy with joy? And so who will listen while I try to tell the story of a joyous life? It may be that I cannot tell it. My heart fails here at the outset of the journey, when I remember the swift grace of this man's walk through life, and resolve to stumble on where he trod with lightness. The flowers whose seeds he scattered lavishly by the wayside may wither in my hands, and my garland prove but a poor tribute. And though I could pluck and wreathe them at sunrise, and give them to immortality with the morning dews still fresh upon them, yet even then must I acknowledge that these were but the bounty of a rich nature, and that the best was never given to the world. For certain men of genius live more for life than for art, and often fate indulges this secret preference of the soul by the tribute of scant opportunity and early death. Of such men, when they are gone, it is almost futile to speak the truth. The essence of their lives is as subtle as perfume; it passes like the song of a bird. Perhaps it would be better that none should attempt to preserve it that we should intrust it to the magnanimity of Nature, as we intrust the mysteries of color and sound, sure that, though light yield to darkness and music to silence, the glory of them will wake again and endure through innumerable changes forever. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... VI LIFE AND THOUGHT T was in the spring of 1882 that we began to be intimate with John Root. At that time he was re-awakening to the joy of life. . He had accepted engrossing work two years before as a refuge from sorrow, and this had restored the sanity of his temper, his sensitive consciousness of the beauty of the world. He was of a genus rare in the West at that time, one which until then we had scarcely encountered. To call it the artistic type would be hackneyed and not fairly descriptive, for this phrase has come to "imply a complete give-and-take of emotion and expression in a nature which has no reserves. I would describe him rather, without reference to types, as a creature devoted to beauty by every instinct of his soul, one whose imagination instinctively rounded out the rhythms and unities of this inscrutable world of sense and spirit. Thus he was hospitable to the music of life and impermeable to its dissonance. Pain and evil he apprehended philosophically from afar -- a basic undersong in the universal paean; but their notes were not strident to his consciousness -- they did not reach him as discord. Perhaps the special quality of the man is best described by the word musical. He was deeply, instinctively musical. All nature, all life he apprehended as harmony -- harmonies of line, of color, of sound, of spirit. And underlying this sensuous consciousness in his mind lay that intuition of mathematical law which is the basis of all harmony. His sense of law was inherent in his sense of beauty, and it was in the symmetrical union of these two -- the mathematical and the artistic apprehension -- that his genius for architecture lay. For architecture, for music also; and most of all, for life. Life is the highest art, and he...

Book The Chicago School of Architecture

Download or read book The Chicago School of Architecture written by Rolf Achilles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The birth of the skyscraper in Chicago in the mid-1880s introduced a new direction for city architecture: upwards. But how-and why- was it that Chicago set the standard for high-rise buildings, not only across the USA but all over the world? Rolf Achilles here introduces the style of the First Chicago School from 1880 to 1910, explaining the innovative use of iron frames for strength, height and openness, and the ubiquity of gridded window arrangements. With reference to such famous architects as William Le Baron Jenny and Frank Lloyd Wright, and colorful pictures of, among many others, the Reliance, Brooks and Marquette buildings, this book is a fascinating exploration of the structures that helped to give Chicago its identity, and the world a new way of building.
