Book Tropical Sustainable Architecture

Download or read book Tropical Sustainable Architecture written by Joo Hwa Bay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-14 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tropical belt – where large areas of South East Asia, India, Africa and parts of both North and South America are located – forms the biggest landmass in the world and has one of the highest numbers of rapidly developing cities. Coincidentally, architecture in these regions shares common problems, the most easily identifiable being the tropical conditions of climate and natural environment. The context for architecture here is fraught with conflicts between tradition and modernization, massive influx of rural poor into urban areas, poorly managed rapid urban development as well as the cultural and social strain of globalization. Many local and overseas architects, planners and city fathers are interested in the social and environmental dimensions of these areas that contribute towards short terms solutions and long term sustainable developments. This book, developed from the first conference of the International Network for Tropical Architecture, supplies a wealth of information from experts worldwide covering the cultural, environmental and technical aspects of thinking, researching and designing for the tropics.

Book The Ethical Function of Architecture

Download or read book The Ethical Function of Architecture written by Karsten Harries and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can architecture help us find our place and way in today's complex world? Can it return individuals to a whole, to a world, to a community? Developing Giedion's claim that contemporary architecture's main task is to interpret a way of life valid for our time, philosopher Karsten Harries answers that architecture should serve a common ethos. But if architecture is to meet that task, it first has to free itself from the dominant formalist approach, and get beyond the notion that its purpose is to produce endless variations of the decorated shed. In a series of cogent and balanced arguments, Harries questions the premises on which architects and theorists have long relied—premises which have contributed to architecture's current identity crisis and marginalization. He first criticizes the aesthetic approach, focusing on the problems of decoration and ornament. He then turns to the language of architecture. If the main task of architecture is indeed interpretation, in just what sense can it be said to speak, and what should it be speaking about? Expanding upon suggestions made by Martin Heidegger, Harries also considers the relationship of building to the idea and meaning of dwelling. Architecture, Harries observes, has a responsibility to community; but its ethical function is inevitably also political. He concludes by examining these seemingly paradoxical functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the constraints and limitations of architecture became the catalyst for design invention? The award-winning young architecture firm Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis calls their answers to this question 'opportunistic architecture.' It is a design philosophy that transforms the typically restrictive conditions of architectural practice—small budgets, awkward spaces, strict zoning—into generators of architectural innovation. Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis presents a diverse selection of built and speculative projects ranging from small installations to larger institutional buildings. Built projects are accompanied by thought-provoking texts, beautiful drawings and photographs. An appendix distills their design philosophy into five tactics, a readymade code for students and practitioners looking for design ideas for the real world. Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis is an architecture partnership established in New York City in 1997 by Marc Tsurumaki, Paul Lewis, and David J. Lewis. Paul Lewis is Assistant Professor at Princeton University. Marc Tsurumaki is Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. David J. Lewis is Associate Professor at Parsons The New School for Design.

Book excerpt: HORIZON: GREG JOHNS, SCULPTURES 1970-2002 traces the ideas and career of the Adelaide-based artist from his first commission in the late 1970s through to participation in recent exhibitions in New York and Bahrain. The story is told by noted Adelaide writer and art critic, John Neylon of the Art Gallery of South Australia. His text examines all aspects of the artist's development as a creator of large-scale public sculptures and explains the philosophy that has shaped the work. The reader is led through a rich array of ideas and images relating to the use of sculptural form as a language in which the works serve as metaphors for the human psyche and the natural/cosmic systems that define our world. A number of key sculptures are examined in detail - as are issues surrounding public art and its reception within the community. The processes of commissioning, creating and installing the sculptures are described along with intimate glimpses into the creation of each work as it proceeds from the artist's studio, to the engineering works where it is fabricated, and then on to its intended site.

Book Advanced Wireless Networks

Download or read book Advanced Wireless Networks written by Savo G. Glisic and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this popular reference covers enabling technologies for building up 5G wireless networks. Due to extensive research and complexity of the incoming solutions for the next generation of wireless networks it is anticipated that the industry will select a subset of these results and leave some advanced technologies to be implemented later,. This new edition presents a carefully chosen combination of the candidate network architectures and the required tools for their analysis. Due to the complexity of the technology, the discussion on 5G will be extensive and it will be difficult to reach consensus on the new global standard. The discussion will have to include the vendors, operators, regulators as well as the research and academic community in the field. Having a comprehensive book will help many participants to join actively the discussion and make meaningful contribution to shaping the new standard.
