Download or read book Strayed Homes written by Edwina Attlee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetic and political, Strayed Homes invites architects, interior designers, and urbanists to think again about common concepts in architecture – 'private', 'public' and 'home'. Whereas most writing about the public/private focusses on urban space, this book focusses on the domestic – exploring those overlooked, everyday places where private and intimate activities take place in public. With four chapters set in four small, liminal spaces: the launderette, the greasy spoon, the fire escape, and the sleeper train - the book is part architectural history, part cultural history. It follows a series of allusions and impressions, to explore how films, adverts, books and anecdotes shape experiences of everyday architecture. Making a case for the poetic interpretation of space, the book can be used as a sourcebook for architects, designers, and theorists alike – prompting the reader to rethink the emotional state of leaving home, intimacy in public, and lonely dreaming.

Book You Have to Pay for the Public Life

Download or read book You Have to Pay for the Public Life written by Charles W. Moore and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously uncollected essays of an architect whose love of people, buildings, and nature was reflected in the places he built. Architect Charles Moore (1925-1993) was not only celebrated for his designs; he was also an admired writer and teacher. Though he wrote clearly and passionately about places, he was perhaps unique in avoiding the tone and stance of the personal manifesto. Through his buildings, books, and travels, Moore consistently sought insights into the questions that always underlie architecture and design: What does it mean to make a place, and how do we inhabit those places? How do we continue to build upon but respect the landscape? How do we reconcile democracy and private land ownership? What is original? What is taste? What is the relationship between past and present? How do we involve inhabitants in making places? Finally, what is public life? As the world becomes smaller, and the uniqueness of places and landscapes gives way to sameness, Moore's celebration of the vernacular and of the surprising are more relevant than ever. The pieces in this book span the years 1952 to 1993 and engage a myriad of topics and movements, such as contextualism, community participation, collaboration, environmentally sensitive design, and historic preservation. The essays in this book reflect as well Moore's scholarship, humanism, urbanity, and great wit.

Book The Architectural Magazine 1838 Vol 5

Download or read book The Architectural Magazine 1838 Vol 5 written by J. C. Loudon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Architectural Magazine, 1838, Vol. 5: And Journal of Improvement in Architecture, Building, and Furnishing The great object of the Architectural Magazine has been, to render the subject of Architecture familiar to the general reader or, in other words, to give it popularity. Accordingly, the volumes already published embrace every department of Architecture, both as an Art of Design and Taste, and as an Art of Construction; they may be considered as including a popular view of all the leading features of Architecture and Building. The work, therefore, in its present limited extent, is more likely to be extensively read, than if it had been carried on to an indefinite number of volumes. The Architectural Magazine consists of a collection of papers, the object of which is to render Architecture familiar to the general reader; and, by this means, to diffuse such a knowledge of the subject, both as an Art of Design and Taste, and as one of Construction, as shall form a solid foundation for the progress of architectural improve ment. Every accession of knowledge is an increase of enjoyment; and, by instructing the eye in the exterior forms and ornaments of buildings, and in the materials and principles of their construction, a new source of pleasure will be opened up. Besides this, a more inti mate knowledge of Architecture and Furniture will not only produce increased domestic comforts, by enabling all householders to detect defective arrangements, imperfections of construction, and inefficient modes of lighting, warming, and ventilating, but will enable them to perceive where improvements may be best made in the department of fitting up and furnishing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to present the work of Surfacedesign, an innovative San Francisco landscape architecture and urban design firm with major public and private projects throughout the Bay Area and in Hawaii, Mexico, and New Zealand. This monograph explores the design philosophy of the three partners of Surfacedesign, who are committed to solutions that emerge from the site itself and challenge conventional approaches to landscape. The work is informed by the vast openness and frontier spirit of the West, expressed in rugged materials and sustainable planting. Surfacedesign focuses on cultivating a sense of connection to the built and natural world, pushing people to engage with the landscape in new ways. The design approach emphasizes and celebrates the unique context and imaginative potential of each project. The studio's process is rooted in asking novel questions and listening to a site and its users, a process that has led to engaging and inspiring landscapes that are rugged, contemporary, and crafted. Twenty-five projects are presented, ranging in scale from the landscape approach to Auckland International Airport in New Zealand to intimate residential gardens in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Featured are Anaha, a Honolulu residential complex overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Land's End Lookout in the Golden Gate National Recreation area, Barnacles, a community gathering space on the Embarcadero, restoration of the Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma, the first commercial winery in California, and the landscape for the Museum of Steel in Monterrey, Mexico, a repurposed foundry that now incorporates the largest green roof in Central America.
