Book Historical Archeology of Tourism in Yellowstone National Park

Download or read book Historical Archeology of Tourism in Yellowstone National Park written by Annalies Corbin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far too often in the ?eld of archeology, the wheel of understanding and insight has a narrow focus that fails to recognize critical studies. Crucial information rega- ing pivotal archeological investigations at a variety of sites worldwide is extremely dif?cult, if not impossible, to obtain. The majority of archeological analysis and reporting, at best, has limited publication. The majority of archeological reports are rarely seen and when published are often only in obscure or out-of-print journals – the reports are almost as hard to ?nd as the archeological sites themselves. There is a desperate need to pull seminal archeological writings together into single issue or thematic volumes. It is the int- tion of this series, When the Land Meets the Sea, to address this problem as it relates to archeological work that encompasses both terrestrial and underwater archeology on a single site or on a collection of related sites. For example, despite the fact that we know that bays and waterways structured historic settlement, there is a lack of archeological literature that looks at both the nautical and terrestrial signatures of watersheds in?uence on historic culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1872, visitors have flocked to Yellowstone National Park to gaze in awe at its dramatic geysers, stunning mountains, and impressive wildlife. Yet more than a century of archaeological research shows that the wild landscape has a long history of human presence. In fact, Native American people have hunted bison and bighorn sheep, fished for cutthroat trout, and gathered bitterroot and camas bulbs here for at least 11,000 years, and twenty-six tribes claim cultural association with Yellowstone today. In Before Yellowstone, Douglas MacDonald tells the story of these early people as revealed by archaeological research into nearly 2,000 sites—many of which he helped survey and excavate. He describes and explains the significance of archaeological areas such as the easy-to-visit Obsidian Cliff, where hunters obtained volcanic rock to make tools and for trade, and Yellowstone Lake, a traditional place for gathering edible plants. MacDonald helps readers understand the archaeological methods used and the limits of archaeological knowledge. From Clovis points associated with mammoth hunting to stone circles marking the sites of tipi lodges, Before Yellowstone brings to life a fascinating story of human engagement with this stunning landscape.

Download or read book Results of an Archaeological Assessment of Yellowstone National Park Artifacts Housed at the National Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institute written by Paul Hugh Sanders and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an archaeological analysis and assessment of artifacts from Yellowstone National Park and nearby areas that are currently housed at the Smithsonian Instiution, National Museum of Natural History. These artifacts were collected from 1871 to 1908. They were described according to current artifact terminology and lithic raw material types. The artifact frequencies were compared to modern collections from recent archaeological investigations within Yellowstone National Park. The goal of the study is to 1) document these early collections, 2) attempt to assess the collections strategy utilized by these early collectors, 3) determine the nature of the archaeological record during the early years of Yellowstone National Park, and 4) compare that record to that seen today in recent archaeological collections. --Absract, p. i.
