Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fables of Aesop, with their lessons and morals about greed, violence, oppression, and mankind's short-sightedness, have--throughout time--always reminded us of our better selves and the importance of real virtues. This book is unusual as it is a hybrid, a fable-novel, in short, a book of fables (stretched into tales) with particular morals. There are three stories that are intertwined, and all of this takes in a post-apocalyptical world set in Australia. The book also humorously criticizes the endless superstitions that have held people back, either through the concepts of tradition, false hopes, and faith. And through the actions of the two main characters, Ritz and Triscuit, we can learn various aspects of wisdom. This novel is a chance for children to better understand the importance of compassion, and to truly understand the complexity of their own world.

Book The Arcadian Dragon an Aesopian Novel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fables of Aesop, with their lessons and morals about greed, violence, oppression, and mankind's short-sightedness, have--throughout time--always reminded us of our better selves and the importance of real virtues. And never before, especially at this time, does society need to be reminded of the importance of compassion, peace, contentment, and cooperation. This book, along with books two and three, are reminders about the need to stand firm against oligarchy and discrimination, the two forces that have always torn societies and nations apart. It has been little over two years since the first book of this trilogy was written. Originally, the idea was to create a short story, written during the lazy hours of Sunday afternoons. Having produced several books of new Aesopian fables (among others), it was a logical next step to produce a hybrid, in short, a book of fables (stretched into tales) with particular morals. Over the first year, the complexity of the stories began to take shape, and it became apparent that three books were needed to finish the story. The three tales that make up this book are set in the future, in a post-apocalyptical world set in Australia with the character of the dragon representing the voices, words, slogans, actions, ideas, and attitudes of 30 dictators, tyrants, oligarchs, and emperors over time: Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, Napoleon, Benito Mussolini, Idi Amin, Muammar Gaddafi, Kim Jong-un, Bashar al-Assad, George Bush, and Donald Trump among others. By making Hasai, the Dragon, multi-dimensional in this regard, the concepts and the attitudes of oligarchs can be better understood. The book also humorously criticizes the endless superstitions that have held people back, either through the concepts of tradition, false hopes, and faith. Besides using Chinese astrology as the core premise for the book (along with its descriptors for each of the 12 animals), the book also pokes fun at western astrology, lucky charms, healing crystals, fortune telling, tarot cards, numerology, and ancestor worship. In short, these books have been written for the victims of discrimination, like Mary Turner, and for all of those who have suffered (and are suffering) from oligarchs and tyrants. Indeed, we may be at the end of an era as events out of the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) continue to highlight the pettiness and evil of the oligarchs, and the hateful divisions in society. Oligarchs, unfortunately, do not go gentle into the good night. And so as our population continues to soar, and our resources decline, the wealthy will do what they do best--which is to control and to oppress. But through wisdom, the poor, (like Aesop himself who was once a slave), will overcome these times. This novel, therefore, is a chance for children to better understand the importance of compassion, and to truly understand the evil and the complexity of their own world. It will--I hope--take one to a place where the land is wide, the flowers are blossoming, the sun is bright, and the roses are white.

Book excerpt: The fables of Aesop, with their lessons and morals about greed, violence, oppression, and mankind's short-sightedness, have-throughout time-always reminded us of our better selves and the importance of real virtues. In short, these books have been written for the victims of discrimination like Mary Turner, and for those who died protecting others from bullies like Sam Reynolds in Texas, as well as for all of those who have suffered (and are suffering) from oligarchs and tyrants. Indeed, we may be at the end of an era as events out of the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) continue to highlight the pettiness and evil of the oligarchs and the hateful divisions in society. Oligarchs, unfortunately, do not go gentle into the good night, to reference the poet Robert Frost. Indeed, just a few days ago, we saw an attempted coup by one such oligarch, Donald Trump, who is fighting his own demise and possible imprisonment. This debacle, the lives which were needlessly lost, and the destruction from it should be a reminder to us all of the costs of allowing our "elites" to rule us. But as our population continues to soar, and our resources decline, the people will look for the "strong man" to lead them out of the wilderness; however, as always, the wealthy will do what they do best-which is to control and to oppress. It is only through wisdom that the poor, (like Aesop himself who was once a slave), will overcome these times. This novel, therefore, is a chance for children to better understand the importance of compassion, and to truly understand the evil and the complexity of their own world. It will-I hope-take one to a place where the land is wide, the flowers are blossoming, the sun is bright, and the roses are white, 'a land of all.'

Book New Aesop Fables for Children

Download or read book New Aesop Fables for Children written by Robert Long and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesop wrote his fables to provide instruction and guidance for all mankind; likewise, these fables were written for the same purpose, particularly as people today are growing up without a moral compass to guide them through complex social issues. As many of the characters in these fables represent common hopes, ideals, goals, and shortcomings that shape society today, I hope that people, young and old, can learn and discuss the benefits of virtues and the consequences of vices. The first two volumes of New Aesop Fables for Children were written back in 2008 whereas volumes three through ten written from March to early May in 2018. Some of these fables adhere more closely to some of the original fables but diverge in the outcome and morals. They supplement my other books of New Aesop Fables, The Arcadian Dragon: An Aesopian Novel, and Giga: New Aesopian Fables, and hopefully, they will make you smile and approach life with more wisdom and patience.

Book The Periodic Table

Download or read book The Periodic Table written by Primo Levi and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Periodic Table is largely a memoir of the years before and after Primo Levi’s transportation from his native Italy to Auschwitz as an anti-Facist partisan and a Jew. It recounts, in clear, precise, unfailingly beautiful prose, the story of the Piedmontese Jewish community from which Levi came, of his years as a student and young chemist at the inception of the Second World War, and of his investigations into the nature of the material world. As such, it provides crucial links and backgrounds, both personal and intellectual, in the tremendous project of remembrance that is Levi’s gift to posterity. But far from being a prologue to his experience of the Holocaust, Levi’s masterpiece represents his most impassioned response to the events that engulfed him. The Periodic Table celebrates the pleasures of love and friendship and the search for meaning, and stands as a monument to those things in us that are capable of resisting and enduring in the face of tyranny.

Book The A to Z of Fantasy Literature

Download or read book The A to Z of Fantasy Literature written by Brian Stableford and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time all literature was fantasy, set in a mythical past when magic existed, animals talked, and the gods took an active hand in earthly affairs. As the mythical past was displaced in Western estimation by the historical past and novelists became increasingly preoccupied with the present, fantasy was temporarily marginalized until the late 20th century, when it enjoyed a spectacular resurgence in every stratum of the literary marketplace. Stableford provides an invaluable guide to this sequence of events and to the current state of the field. The chronology tracks the evolution of fantasy from the origins of literature to the 21st century. The introduction explains the nature of the impulses creating and shaping fantasy literature, the problems of its definition and the reasons for its changing historical fortunes. The dictionary includes cross-referenced entries on more than 700 authors, ranging across the entire historical spectrum, while more than 200 other entries describe the fantasy subgenres, key images in fantasy literature, technical terms used in fantasy criticism, and the intimately convoluted relationship between literary fantasies, scholarly fantasies, and lifestyle fantasies. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography that ranges from general textbooks and specialized accounts of the history and scholarship of fantasy literature, through bibliographies and accounts of the fantasy literature of different nations, to individual author studies and useful websites.

Book The Anthology of Babel

Download or read book The Anthology of Babel written by Ed Simon and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should there only be literary scholarship about authors who actually lived, and texts which exist? Where are the articles on Enoch Campion, Linus Withold, Redondo Panza, Darshan Singh, or Heidi B. Morton? That none of these are real authors should be no impediment to interpreting their invented writings. In the first collection of its kind, The Anthology of Babel publishes academic articles by scholars on authors, books, and movements that are completely invented. Blurring the lines between scholarship and creative writing, The Anthology of Babel inaugurates a completely new literary genre perfectly attuned to the era we live in, a project evocative of Jorge-Louis Borges, Umberto Eco, and Italo Calvino.

Book The Ukrainians

  • Author : Andrew Wilson
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

  • ISBN : 0300272499
  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book The Ukrainians written by Andrew Wilson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in many postcommunist states, politics in Ukraine revolves around the issue of national identity. Ukrainian nationalists see themselves as one of the world’s oldest and most civilized peoples, as “older brothers” to the younger Russian culture.Yet Ukraine became independent only in 1991, and Ukrainians often feel like a minority in their own country, where Russian is still the main language heard on the streets of the capital, Kiev. This book is a comprehensive guide to modern Ukraine and to the versions of its past propagated by both Russians and Ukrainians. Andrew Wilson provides the most acute, informed, and up-to-date account available of the Ukrainians and their country. Concentrating on the complex relation between Ukraine and Russia, the book begins with the myth of common origin in the early medieval era, then looks closely at the Ukrainian experience under the tsars and Soviets, the experience of minorities in the country, and the path to independence in 1991. Wilson also considers the history of Ukraine since 1991 and the continuing disputes over identity, culture, and religion. He examines the economic collapse under the first president, Leonid Kravchuk, and the attempts at recovery under his successor, Leonid Kuchma. Wilson explores the conflicts in Ukrainian society between the country’s Eurasian roots and its Western aspirations, as well as the significance of the presidential election of November 1999.

Book excerpt: Dosso Dossi has long been considered one of Renaissance Italy's most intriguing artists. Although a wealth of documents chronicles his life, he remains, in many ways, an enigma, and his art continues to be as elusive as it is compelling. In Dosso's Fate, leading scholars from a wide range of disciplines examine the social, intellectual, and historical contexts of his art, focusing on the development of new genres of painting, questions of style and chronology, the influence of courtly culture, and the work of his collaborators, as well as his visual and literary sources and his painting technique. The result is an important and original contribution not only to literature on Dosso Dossi but also to the study of cultural history in early modern Italy.

Book From Revolt to Riches

Download or read book From Revolt to Riches written by Theo Hermans and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection investigates the culture and history of the Low Countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries from both international and interdisciplinary perspectives. The period was one of extraordinary upheaval and change, as the combined impact of Renaissance, Reformation and Revolt resulted in the radically new conditions – political, economic and intellectual – of the Dutch Republic in its Golden Age. While many aspects of this rich and nuanced era have been studied before, the emphasis of this volume is on a series of interactions and interrelations: between communities and their varying but often cognate languages; between different but overlapping spheres of human activity; between culture and history. The chapters are written by historians, linguists, bibliographers, art historians and literary scholars based in the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain and the United States. In continually crossing disciplinary, linguistic and national boundaries, while keeping the culture and history of the Low Countries in the Renaissance and Golden Age in focus, this book opens up new and often surprising perspectives on a region all the more intriguing for the very complexity of its entanglements.
