Book Swift Vs Mainwaring

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Hale Ellis
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1985
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 610 pages

Download or read book Swift Vs Mainwaring written by Frank Hale Ellis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edition the text of The Examiner is presented as Swift wrote it, not as it was revised for publication by George Faulkner in 1738. And for the first time Swift's Examiners are juxtaposed with the Medleys of Arthur Mainwaring that replied to them every week. They bring the reader close to the actualités of London between November 1710 and June 1711. From the literary point of view The Examiner is important because it contains some of Swift's best work. Even under the pressure of weekly publication he was still able to achieve, in Herbert Davis's words, 'an aloofness as if beyond bias and passion'.

Book The Discourse on Political Pluralism in Early Eighteenth century England

Download or read book The Discourse on Political Pluralism in Early Eighteenth century England written by Pasi Ihalainen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pasi Ihalainen's book demonstrates that political pluralism was generally conceptualised through terminology derived from the traditionally dominant religious discourse, which contributed to continuity in critical attitudes towards political parties. Yet significant shifts also occurred in the application of religious terminology of pluralism. These shifts include the gradual secularisation of the vocabularies of the political and of party. There also occurred a decline in the frequency of religious terms, as politics and religion became understood as separate, though analogous, spheres. Terminologies of religious and political pluralism, became more distinct, which facilitated the expression of more positive attitudes towards political pluralism.

Book The Oxford Handbook of American Political History

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of American Political History written by Paula Baker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American political and policy history has revived since the turn of the twenty-first century. After social and cultural history emerged as dominant forces to reveal the importance of class, race, and gender within the United States, the application of this line of work to American politics and policy followed. In addition, social movements, particularly the civil rights and feminism, helped rekindle political and policy history. As a result, a new generation of historians turned their attention to American politics. Their new approach still covers traditional subjects, but more often it combines an interest in the state, politics, and policy with other specialties (urban, labor, social, and race, among others) within the history and social science disciplines. The Oxford Handbook of American Political History incorporates and reflects this renaissance of American political history. It not only provides a chronological framework but also illustrates fundamental political themes and debates about public policy, including party systems, women in politics, political advertising, religion, and more. Chapters on economy, defense, agriculture, immigration, transportation, communication, environment, social welfare, health care, drugs and alcohol, education, and civil rights trace the development and shifts in American policy history. This collection of essays by 29 distinguished scholars offers a comprehensive overview of American politics and policy.

Book Conservative Internationalism

Download or read book Conservative Internationalism written by Henry R. Nau and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about U.S. foreign policy have revolved around three main traditions--liberal internationalism, realism, and nationalism. In this book, distinguished political scientist Henry Nau delves deeply into a fourth, overlooked foreign policy tradition that he calls "conservative internationalism." This approach spreads freedom, like liberal internationalism; arms diplomacy, like realism; and preserves national sovereignty, like nationalism. It targets a world of limited government or independent "sister republics," not a world of great power concerts or centralized international institutions. Nau explores conservative internationalism in the foreign policies of Thomas Jefferson, James Polk, Harry Truman, and Ronald Reagan. These presidents did more than any others to expand the arc of freedom using a deft combination of force, diplomacy, and compromise. Since Reagan, presidents have swung back and forth among the main traditions, overreaching under Bush and now retrenching under Obama. Nau demonstrates that conservative internationalism offers an alternative way. It pursues freedom but not everywhere, prioritizing situations that border on existing free countries--Turkey, for example, rather than Iraq. It uses lesser force early to influence negotiations rather than greater force later after negotiations fail. And it reaches timely compromises to cash in military leverage and sustain public support. A groundbreaking revival of a neglected foreign policy tradition, Conservative Internationalism shows how the United States can effectively sustain global leadership while respecting the constraints of public will and material resources.
