Book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals

Download or read book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals written by James W. Daniel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers in general the problem of finding the minimum of a given functional f(u) over a set B by approximately minimizing a sequence of functionals f sub n(u sub n) over a 'discretized' set B sub n; theorems are given proving the convergence of the approximating points u sub n in B sub n to the desired point u in B. Applications are given to the Rayleigh-Ritz method, regularization, Chebyshev solution of differential equations, and the calculus of variations. (Author).

Book A Fibonacci Search Algorithm for the Approximate Minimization of a Function of a Single Variable

Download or read book A Fibonacci Search Algorithm for the Approximate Minimization of a Function of a Single Variable written by Peter J. Trushel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fibonacci search method for determining the minimizing argument of a unimodal function is summarized. A computer program for implementing this search method is presented. The concepts of n-search, search algorithm, mini-max n-search, and epilson mini-max n-search are introduced and employed to develop the Fibonacci search method when only two function evaluations are permitted. A lower bound for the smallest detectable difference between two numbers represented by d decimal digits on a digital computer is also given. (Author).

Book Minimization Methods for Non Differentiable Functions

Download or read book Minimization Methods for Non Differentiable Functions written by N.Z. Shor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years much attention has been given to the development of auto matic systems of planning, design and control in various branches of the national economy. Quality of decisions is an issue which has come to the forefront, increasing the significance of optimization algorithms in math ematical software packages for al,ltomatic systems of various levels and pur poses. Methods for minimizing functions with discontinuous gradients are gaining in importance and the ~xperts in the computational methods of mathematical programming tend to agree that progress in the development of algorithms for minimizing nonsmooth functions is the key to the con struction of efficient techniques for solving large scale problems. This monograph summarizes to a certain extent fifteen years of the author's work on developing generalized gradient methods for nonsmooth minimization. This work started in the department of economic cybernetics of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences under the supervision of V.S. Mikhalevich, a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, in connection with the need for solutions to important, practical problems of optimal planning and design. In Chap. I we describe basic classes of nonsmooth functions that are dif ferentiable almost everywhere, and analyze various ways of defining generalized gradient sets. In Chap. 2 we study in detail various versions of the su bgradient method, show their relation to the methods of Fejer-type approximations and briefly present the fundamentals of e-subgradient methods.

Book Developments in Structural Analysis and Synthesis by Function Minimization

Download or read book Developments in Structural Analysis and Synthesis by Function Minimization written by Lucien A. Schmit (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Function minimization methods in structural analysis and optimum design are discussed. A computer program which implements the energy search method of nonlinear finite element analysis is presented. Several recent weight optimization methods based on finite element analysis are reviewed. Special characteristics of the finite element method relevant to automated design are identified. Some efficient approximate analysis methods for optimization applications are explored. Applications of some of these methods to plane frames and finite-deflection trusses are presented.

Book Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms II

Download or read book Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms II written by Jean-Baptiste Hiriart-Urruty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the reviews: "The account is quite detailed and is written in a manner that will appeal to analysts and numerical practitioners alike...they contain everything from rigorous proofs to tables of numerical calculations.... one of the strong features of these books...that they are designed not for the expert, but for those who whish to learn the subject matter starting from little or no background...there are numerous examples, and counter-examples, to back up the theory...To my knowledge, no other authors have given such a clear geometric account of convex analysis." "This innovative text is well written, copiously illustrated, and accessible to a wide audience"

Book Approximation Theory and Methods

Download or read book Approximation Theory and Methods written by M. J. D. Powell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-03-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most functions that occur in mathematics cannot be used directly in computer calculations. Instead they are approximated by manageable functions such as polynomials and piecewise polynomials. The general theory of the subject and its application to polynomial approximation are classical, but piecewise polynomials have become far more useful during the last twenty years. Thus many important theoretical properties have been found recently and many new techniques for the automatic calculation of approximations to prescribed accuracy have been developed. This book gives a thorough and coherent introduction to the theory that is the basis of current approximation methods. Professor Powell describes and analyses the main techniques of calculation supplying sufficient motivation throughout the book to make it accessible to scientists and engineers who require approximation methods for practical needs. Because the book is based on a course of lectures to third-year undergraduates in mathematics at Cambridge University, sufficient attention is given to theory to make it highly suitable as a mathematical textbook at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Book Approximation Theory and Optimization

Download or read book Approximation Theory and Optimization written by M. D. Buhmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Powell is one of the world's foremost figures in numerical analysis. This volume, first published in 1997, is derived from invited talks given at a meeting celebrating his 60th birthday and, reflecting Powell's own achievements, focuses on innovative work in optimisation and in approximation theory. The individual papers have been written by leading authorities in their subjects and are a mix of expository articles and surveys. They have all been reviewed and edited to form a coherent volume for this important discipline within mathematics, with highly relevant applications throughout science and engineering.

Book Duality for Nonconvex Approximation and Optimization

Download or read book Duality for Nonconvex Approximation and Optimization written by Ivan Singer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of convex optimization has been constantly developing over the past 30 years. Most recently, many researchers have been studying more complicated classes of problems that still can be studied by means of convex analysis, so-called "anticonvex" and "convex-anticonvex" optimizaton problems. This manuscript contains an exhaustive presentation of the duality for these classes of problems and some of its generalization in the framework of abstract convexity. This manuscript will be of great interest for experts in this and related fields.
