Book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals

Download or read book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals written by James W. Daniel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers in general the problem of finding the minimum of a given functional f(u) over a set B by approximately minimizing a sequence of functionals f sub n(u sub n) over a 'discretized' set B sub n; theorems are given proving the convergence of the approximating points u sub n in B sub n to the desired point u in B. Applications are given to the Rayleigh-Ritz method, regularization, Chebyshev solution of differential equations, and the calculus of variations. (Author).

Book An Introduction to Functional Analysis in Computational Mathematics

Download or read book An Introduction to Functional Analysis in Computational Mathematics written by V.I. Lebedev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the methods and bases of functional analysis that are directly adjacent to the problems of numerical mathematics and its applications; they are what one needs for the understand ing from a general viewpoint of ideas and methods of computational mathematics and of optimization problems for numerical algorithms. Functional analysis in mathematics is now just the small visible part of the iceberg. Its relief and summit were formed under the influence of this author's personal experience and tastes. This edition in English contains some additions and changes as compared to the second edition in Russian; discovered errors and misprints had been corrected again here; to the author's distress, they jump incomprehensibly from one edition to another as fleas. The list of literature is far from being complete; just a number of textbooks and monographs published in Russian have been included. The author is grateful to S. Gerasimova for her help and patience in the complex process of typing the mathematical manuscript while the author corrected, rearranged, supplemented, simplified, general ized, and improved as it seemed to him the book's contents. The author thanks G. Kontarev for the difficult job of translation and V. Klyachin for the excellent figures.

Book Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications

Download or read book Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications written by Louis B. Rall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of nonlinear functional analysis and its application. This book provides an introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of this field. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the possibilities for applying ideas from functional analysis to problems in analysis. This text then provides a systematic exposition of several aspects of differential calculus in norms and topological linear spaces. Other chapters consider the various settings in nonlinear functional analysis in which differentials play a significant role. This book discusses as well the generalized inverse for a bounded linear operator, whose range is not necessarily closed. The final chapter deals with the equations of hydrodynamics, which are usually highly nonlinear and difficult to solve. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians. Readers who are interested in nonlinear functional analysis will also find this book useful.

Book The Gaussian Approximation Potential

Download or read book The Gaussian Approximation Potential written by Albert Bartók-Pártay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation of materials at the atomistic level is an important tool in studying microscopic structures and processes. The atomic interactions necessary for the simulations are correctly described by Quantum Mechanics, but the size of systems and the length of processes that can be modelled are still limited. The framework of Gaussian Approximation Potentials that is developed in this thesis allows us to generate interatomic potentials automatically, based on quantum mechanical data. The resulting potentials offer several orders of magnitude faster computations, while maintaining quantum mechanical accuracy. The method has already been successfully applied for semiconductors and metals.

Book The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications

Download or read book The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications written by J. R. Whiteman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications provides information pertinent to the mathematics of finite elements, applications, algorithms, and computational techniques. This book discusses the developments in the mathematics of finite elements. Organized into 32 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basis of the finite element process as a general approximation tool. This text then examines the methods for obtaining bounds on the errors in finite element solutions to two-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems defined on simply connected polygonal regions. Other chapters consider the practical implementation of the Galerkin and the Rayleigh–Ritz methods to equations of importance to physics and engineering. This book discusses as well a fundamental investigation into the problem of convergence in the finite element method. The final chapter deals with an algorithm that is applicable to the analysis of arbitrary plane stress or plane strain configurations. This book is a valuable resource for numerical analysts, mathematical physicist, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

Download or read book written by V. M. Filippov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989-12-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a variational method for solving linear equations with $B$-symmetric and $B$-positive operators and generalizes the method to nonlinear equations with nonpotential operators. The author carries out a constructive extension of the variational method to ``nonvariational'' equations (including parabolic equations) in classes of functionals which differ from the Euler-Lagrange functionals. In this connection, some new functions spaces are considered. Intended for mathematicians working in the areas of functional analysis and differential equations, this book would also prove useful for researchers in other areas and students in advanced courses who use variational methods in solving linear and nonlinear boundary value problems in continuum mechanics and theoretical physics.

Starting in Innsbruck, in Austria (1993), then to Ales in Prance (1995), Norwich in England (1997), Portoroz in Slovenia (1999), Prague in the Czech Republic (2001) and finally Roanne, in France (2003), the ICANNGA series has established itself for experienced workers in the field. The series has also been of value to young researchers wishing both to extend their knowledge and experience and also to meet internationally renowned experts. The 2005 Conference, the seventh in the ICANNGA series, will take place at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, drawing on the experience of previous events, and following the same general model, combining technical sessions, including plenary lectures by renowned scientists, with tutorials.
