Book Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom 4th Edition

Download or read book Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom 4th Edition written by Thomas Armstrong and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades since it was first introduced, Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences (MI) theory has transformed how people think about learning the world over. Educators using the theory have achieved remarkable success in helping all students, including those who learn in nontraditional ways, to navigate school (and life outside it) with confidence and success. Within the context of classroom instruction, no author besides Gardner has done more to popularize MI theory than Thomas Armstrong, whose best seller Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom has become a bona fide education classic in its own right. This expanded fourth edition provides educators at all levels with everything they need to apply MI theory to curriculum development, lesson planning, assessment, special education, cognitive skills, career development, educational policy, and more. In addition to the many strategies, templates, and examples that have made Armstrong’s book so enduringly popular, this edition is updated to examine how emerging neurodiversity research, trends toward greater instructional personalization, and rapidly evolving virtual learning tools have affected the use of MI theory to enhance student achievement. It also includes brand-new lesson plans aligned to nationwide standards and a revised list of resources for further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, Howard Gardner proposed the Multiple Intelligences Theory to explain intelligence as the ability to perform skills and solve problems valued by the society. Although the theory was not designed to become a teaching strategy, education professionals readily accepted MI both nationally and globally. In accordance with much of the research conducted regarding MI Theory since its inception in 1983, this study was conducted to determine if the application of the Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory as an alternative form of assessment in a social studies curriculum for students with disabilities will decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity? Upon reviewing the literature, MI was appealing to instructors for a variety of reasons such as validating existing teacher experiences, the multicultural dynamic of the 21st century classroom and effectiveness of MI for students with disabilities. Furthermore, following the completion of several academic studies of MI and the classroom, the literature found that MI promotes intellectual strengths of the student, encourages student self-reflection and meta-cognition, serves as an alternative form of assessment, produces motivated learners and a sense of mutual respect and collaboration. The researcher expected to obtain similar results when MI was applied to a out of district special day school in Marlboro, NJ. Collier High School serves between 150-200 special needs and at risk youth at the secondary level. Fifteen students were selected from four separate sections of a United States History II as mandated by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. The study consisted of two phases encompassing six social studies units. At the completion of each unit, participants were required to complete an end of unit activity. The first three activities restricted student choice and freedom of expression while the second round of end of unit activities contained eight separate activity choices, each aligned to one particular multiple intelligence. Throughout the course of both phases, the researcher collected data using observations, anecdotal records, completion and assessment records and questionnaires. Following the completion of the study and the analysis of the data, the researcher concluded that MI and student choice did decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity. Student time on task became more productive while students intuitively collaborated. End of unit activity scores increased for the majority of participants. Finally, the synthesis of questionnaire data revealed that students are more comfortable and motivated when provided to choose a method of expression or demonstrate material comprehension utilizing their dominant intelligence strength. Although a disparity emerged between the perceived dominant intelligence, the participants' activity selection during Phase II, and assessment, potential advantages and disadvantages to the implementation of MI for secondary level students with disabilities were identified while potential solutions were recommended.

Book Teaching for Multiple Intelligences

Download or read book Teaching for Multiple Intelligences written by David G. Lazear and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 50 years, brain researchers have stated that human beings probably use less than 1 percent of the brain's potential, and research findings about human intelligence have transformed almost all previous definitions of intelligence. This booklet addresses the following key findings in intelligence research: intelligence is not fixed or static; intelligence can be learned and taught; and intelligence is a multidimensional phenomenon that occurs at multiple levels of the brain/mind/body system. After this discussion of the research, the publication is divided into five parts: (1) "Overview of the Seven Intelligences" (verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, visual/spatial, body/kinesthetic, musical/rhythmic, interpersonal intelligence, and intrapersonal intelligence); (2) "Teaching for Multiple Intelligences: A New Look at the Curriculum" (includes an exercise on how one can teach for multiple intelligences in one's curriculum); (3) "New Instructional Methods for Teaching with Multiple Intelligences"; (4) "Teaching about Multiple Intelligences: Re-inventing the Learning Process"; and (5) "A Multi-Modal Approach to Assessment" (includes techniques for student evaluation and teacher self-assessment). (Contains 27 references.) (LL)

Book Multiple Intelligences

Download or read book Multiple Intelligences written by Howard E. Gardner and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Gardner's brilliant conception of individual competence is changing the face of education today. In the ten years since the publication of his seminal Frames of Mind , thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory—the powerful notion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in understanding oneself. Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice brings together previously published and original work by Gardner and his colleagues at Project Zero to provide a coherent picture of what we have learned about the educational applications of MI theory from projects in schools and formal research over the last decade.

Book The Theory of Multiple Intelligences in a Special Education Music Classroom

Download or read book The Theory of Multiple Intelligences in a Special Education Music Classroom written by Daniel Passadino and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special education students involved in music classes currently face a lack of inclusivity. Various methods have been used to promote inclusivity in the music classroom. This paper focuses on how Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory promotes inclusivity in the special education music classroom. The multiple intelligence theory streamlines a special education music curriculum by highlighting each child’s strongest intelligence. To assess a child’s intelligences, they must participate in music-related tests. The tests include mini lessons which cater to the multiple intelligences. For example, when children are taught using visuals, some will not be able to learn as effectively if they are strongest in linguistic learning or mathematics. Teachers must differentiate instruction so each student can learn to the best of their ability. The students will in turn benefit by learning more easily, leading to a more productive classroom.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is the purpose of this thesis to explore the likelihood of delivering a quality, supportive, and appropriate education to students with learning disabilities in the general education setting in which recent scientific research is being implemented. Current literature will be reviewed regarding current understanding of intelligence, how the brain does what it does, how learning disabilities are defined and assessed, and how general education teachers use this knowledge to prepare to service special education students placed in their general education classrooms. This study seeks to answer the following question: Do general education teachers use brain-based teaching, multiple intelligence theory, and learning styles theory with their included students, and if so, what level of success or failure do they experience?"--Leaf 13.
